I too like the songs, App. Poonthendral kaatre vaa vaa is among my all time favo IR songs, not just PS or PJ. Just that her voice in this time period doesn't work much for me. Avalo dhaan.
I agree with venkki here. When it comes to any (semi) classical delight or any soothing (happy or sad) melodies like 'gori tera gaon' or 'vaa vaa anbe anbe' or 'mogham ennum theeyil' or that infinite number of malayalam melodies, all fits to his voice like a 'T' and no singer can even come close to him, here I even mean SPB. That is his forte. But when it comes to these peppy or energetic numbers like 'kaattukkuyilu', definitely KJY should not have been there at all. Even there is fire power and all, I can still feel he is not 100% free and uninhibited when he sings those songs. I can hear that restraint clearly. Even 'Thannithotti' for that case. Those songs are not for him. His majestic voice and singing does'nt help him much there.

(தென்றலே என்னைத்தொடு, 1985 )
A guitar / flute / trumpet / drum / synth delight with thuLLal SPB voice. The saraNam is close to a "remix" of nee thAnE enthan pon vasantham's saraNam and the pallavi is not that catchy but SPB gives the required enthu to make the song above-average overall! The rhythm arrangement for the pallavi is another highlight of the song - first of its kind when arrived and made us embrace the song happily!
A song made for the buses :-) I enjoyed this most when heard in buses that also ran fast. Well, even in those "stop-dur-bur-go" town buses, the journey was made more tolerable by songs like this that gave briskiness to the body and mind. Naturally, I get reminded of a number of bus travels and travails :-( Having used public transport almost all the time for the first half of my life (i.e. , so far), I can't believe the fact that in the last 8 years I've used the bus only once in this motor city  This is perhaps the only metro area in the world with > 4 million people with just a namesake public transportation! Lacking automobile is like lacking legs in Detroit!
Anyways, that 15 k.m. bus travels from Trichy to the college were typically the most irritable experiences of the life there. chOzhan / DCTC buses never had cassette players. Among private buses, those that had music stopped at BHEL (often I switched buses at BHEL for this reason, even willing to wait there for the next thuvAkcity bus for a long time, or leaving the bicycle in the "stand" at BHEL).
Then there was this "last-bus" issues :-( Those who used town buses in the 80's can probably relate to this very well. All those school years in the village were spent with this restriction. (Till my 8th grade or so, the last bus from town was at 7 PM. Later, another bus came, that went thru our village which relaxed the curfew by 8 PM. The college days were also restricted by some 9:30 thingy and the latest to even BHEL was 10:30 for many years until they introduced the 'nadu nisi service'. After reaching BHEL, the bicycle ride).
The worst experiences in Trichy with buses, however, were with the conductors who were among the rudest in the world. The arrogance with which they treat passengers who didn't have "change" was to be experienced to be believed :-( Within Trichy, I had been asked to get down at least a couple of times. The worst experience was in Singarathope when I was reluctantly moving toward the steps when ordered to get down. With a big grin, the conductor was giving change to a female for Rs 20...when I mildly objected telling 'enna sAr ippO thAnE sillaRai illainnu ennaiya eRanga sonneenga', loud came the reply : 'nee enna pombaLayA'?
 punchline-la mudichittingga. As usual app, those are gems of cultural information for non-TN dwelling folks like me. This is one of "skip" for me though. Thendral vanthu is good for Tabla and bongo players who want to relax after maybe some heavy playing. Love the slow duets between these two when KJY and SJ does the vocal part. (Veetula session irunthA, I'd do the bongo, dad - tabla, younger brother does excellent KJY).
Very nice bus travel reminiscence App!. Yes, superb punchline at the end (only for reading)! Aana enna sir, intha paattaye above-average'nuteenga. Everything about this song is just amazing, especially the sycopation. I am still waiting to hear such a light, casual and gentle compositions with a heart of indian city today, without any luck. Yes only luck can get us such a song today. We are in a very sad state today. The way SPB ends the charanam is just dashing. I don't have any complaints in this song.
groucho & V_Sji,
adhu actual sirs, exact words thrown at me and no spice added...
BTW, Coimbatore was just the opposite (in my experience). Extremely polite ones!
(Palakkad buswAlAs even better...)
Another peculiar thing with some 80's Trichy buses was one peculiar horn  High frequency-la 'veer veer'nnu kaththum...one should experience that in the hot summer on WB road for the max irritation...
Yes App sir, I just put that emoticon at the wrong place just for the post. I know and can completely understand your situation. Sometimes these conductors don't have a heart. I too experienced like this many times.

#200 அதிகாலை நேரமே
(மீண்டும் ஒரு காதல் கதை, 1985 , ஜானகியுடன்)
Perfect song for the morning of this mildly cold fall weather.
>75% of the leaves gone and trees looking "kuchchi-kuchchiyA", mild deposit of dew on the vehicles parked in the street and a smooth ride to work. Since a call got cancelled at 7 AM, spent a few minutes standing by the large glass windows by the lakeside at the workplace to thoroughly enjoy the scene.
Being in 0'th floor, which is in the same level as the beautiful lake gives such a panoramic view of the woods & a lone building on the other side of the lake. Preparing for the winter (possibly for the long flights ahead), there are 100's of geese / swans on the surface of the lake, practically non-moving like sculptures and making the whole view look like an oil painting. With daylight yet to arrive in full, this partly-dark scene is an artwork of class - better than what any master artist had ever painted!
The Malayalee girl in the next aisle crossed me smiling and making an appreciative remark on the view and I got reminded of the Pratap Pothen stuff that needs to be posted today...and here I'm listening to the song and typing :-) What a sweet number that goes so smoothly along the wonderful morning. The song of the dawn for sure, composed with great care and perfectly executed by the sweet SPB-SJ pair! Possibly a new toy that rAsA got at that time got deployed in the prelude (some sound from a Korg?). The second interlude is definitely an artwork of class and difficult to express the appreciation in words!
IIRC, this was the directorial debut of PP about whose combo with IR I've frequently posted on the hub. Both as an actor & director. moodupani, panneer pushpangaL, nenjaththaikkiLLAthE, eeravizhikkAviyangaL, veRRi vizhA, MDM...All sophisticated scores. While MOKK is nowhere near any of those biggie albums, this song has the same level of class! I'm not sure whether the PP-R marriage was prior to this movie or after. Either way, both have acted in this movie as those lacking mana vaLarchchi and he got an award from Zail Singh (NA?) as per the picture at Wikipedia. Though I've totally forgotten the on-screen stuff of EVK, one of our hubbers recently posted a youtube of a song from that and was amused to see that it had the PP-R pair. Well, they made a good combo, IMO. Both appear to be extremely intelligent people.
I don't remember whether we paid a lot of attention to this song at the time of arrival - despite the decent air time it got. I've actually heard it more often in later years, mostly during Palakkad - Coimbatore early days. That way, not so much of nostalgia attached to the song and readers are saved:-)
Very picturesque and poetic post!. One of your best post App for one of the deserving melody.
Feeling early morning mist gently touching the water while passing by.

Now that the #200 is taken care of, we'll probably visit (rather revisit) the Selvi song tomorrow

App, love the way you bring up different and contrasting scenarios and memories to tag along with different songs. Lovely.
I had a similar experience in Chennai recently in a local bus travel. Here, in Bangalore, its normal for a conductor to walk up to you in a bus, however empty of full it is and issue the ticket. Grown up with this habit, when I was in Chennai some months back, I boarded a bus and took the seat right next to the driver's (my favorite seat always, but never get to travel in this seat in Karnataka because the first half of the bus is reserved for ladies, unlike in TN where, strange enough and beyond my comprehension, the rear half of the bus, where the ride generally tends to get bumpy, is reserved for them). I saw the conductor sitting towards the rear of the bus and there were only a handful of passengers. 'Stops' started going by and there was no sign of him coming to the front. I kept glancing towards him every now and then and he would just wear a plain look on his face. Almost 7 stops later, he walked up to the front, and surprise surprise, angrily questioned me if I was trying to travel 'without' (I even had the 'change' ready in my hand all the time). Then the driver (who had been silently going about his business till then) joined the party and they happily started verbally abusing and accusing me being a cheat. 'You gotta come and get your ticket, geddit?' he said finally and only then did I understand. I chose to remain silent after buying the ticket and sat in the same seat before alighting the bus at the destination. My hand involuntarily moved up and pointed a middle finger at the bus as it moved past me. Culture shock'mbaangale, idhu dhaano?
And as unexpected as this confrontation, was the rhythm in Kavidhai Paadu, when I heard it the first time. Never heard anything like this before (where he suddenly introduces a loud, for IR's rhythm standards, kerala chendai like beat in the pallavi). Neither can I think of any other song after this where he has tried somthing similar. I still don't know if it goes along with the flow of the song, but it surely gives the song an identity.
Another song with similar rhythm, KV, would be "hello guru premakosameloi jeevitham" from Nirnayam. There is a tamil dubbed version in thiraipaadal as well.
mikka nanRi, baroque & KV!
I think it is that way in most places of TN / Kerala as well with Chennai being the glorious exception. My first-time experience in Pallavan was also one of surprise - of waiting for conductor. However, as my place of getting down came, I asked the next standing passenger who explained me the "Madras system" and I walked up to the "conductor seat" to pay :-)Quote:
Here, in Bangalore, its normal for a conductor to walk up to you in a bus
Coimbatore / Kerala too used to have the "front half for women" system...
Another kosuRu info - in US buses, driver is also conductor and money goes into a machine mounted near him...and every one enters thru the front (and mostly exit thru the front except bigger stops where he opens the door in the middle)...
App, the system you explained is same as in London - and. I guess most western nations will have it
In contrast, Kerala used to have 2 conductors :-) (i.e. in the private buses, not the yAnai mark KSRTC)
One will collect money (most private buses don't give paper tickets, simbly collect dough into the pouch, often they give "concessions" on the fly, no change no problem, sometimes no money also no problem, students used to give only 10 paisA etc ) while the other guy, called "kizhi or kiLi" prompts the stop and go
App, even in Trichy the private route buses (e.g. Trichy-Tanjore) in the 90s/00s had two conductors. Both of them carry the pouch and in fact they kizhichify tickets religiously. No cheating business. And the vandi moves only when both give the go ahead with their whistles..
#201 இளமனது பலகனவு விழிகளிலே வழிகிறதே
(செல்வி, 1985 , ஜானகியுடன்)
Classic SPB-SJ duet that found its place in my first recorded cassette! Phenomenal prelude and sweet interludes (though I wished 'en iniya pon nilAvE' / 'idhu oru nilAkkAlam' style chorus were used, instead of the nAdan style chorus). SPB-SJ thoroughly enjoyed singing this in a dreamy way and the song creates such dreamy images in one's mind on each listen!
Like already discussed in this thread recently (and youtube proof given), literal dogs romanced (or did circus stuff) on screen for this gem of a song  K Natraj must have been in a terrible mood to have it that way. (Or possibly mistaken in the notion that it was an innovation / being funny etc).
However, one interesting thing about this song for me was the instrumental version that was available. Recording centers were making use of that piece as the "end of cassette filler" and one could hear the piece every now and then on buses. I remember recording that in one of my cassettes and enjoying it those days. It wasn't a karoke but replaced the human voices with (possibly) accordian. Possibly the only such piece ever to have come out on a rAsA album. It retained the "track" ditto as in the song, including the chorus in interludes.
I used to always draw parallel with the MSV disk in our school that featured very similar rendering of the mellisai mannar's tracks - with lead vocals replaced by accordian / harmonium kind of instrument. One song that still rings in my ears is 'viLakkERRi vaikkiREn vidiya vidiya eriyattum' of soothAttam. That MSV instrumental track was also used by AIR every now and then as a filler between programs when there was a gap of a minute or so (e.g. AIR Trichy waiting for Chennai anjal / Delhi anjal etc). However, I also remember 'kAdhOdu dhAn nAn pEsuvEn' from that disk  Due to that, prior to tfmpage DF-ing, I was under the impression that the veLLi vizha song was by MSV. (The composer is V Kumar, BTW).
That way, though I liked the Selvi instrumental, I always wished it had some other instrument replacing the lead vocals (like lead guitar or flute or Kunnakkudi style violin) and not the same one used for viLakkERRi & kAdhOdu dhAn...
mmmm.... sorry App_eng, you don't have fond memories of trichy local bus travels during your college years.

app, we had the instrumental one back then. Radio station here often used parts of this song for opening or mid-section of some shows (especially the tanthanAthanthananA part)
baroque :-)
groucho,
Is the opening sound by "maracas" ?
The other SPB-SJ duet from Selvi, onnE onnu sounds sweet but wasn't that popular then IIRC. It possibly found its place in some cassette-recording-enthusiasts' collections and/or buses on village routes but by and large didn't get public attention. So, skip button for this thread...
We'll move on to another movie for today's number...
#202 கண்ணில் என்ன கார்காலம், கன்னங்களில் நீர்க்கோலம்
(உன் கண்ணில் நீர் வழிந்தால், 1985 , ஜானகியுடன்)
Sweet song with an excellent strings prelude! Signature rAsA tablA rhythm combined with chords & bass and melodious SPB/SJ. Evergreen number and can be thorougly enjoyed during "before-sleep-headphone-times".
I can't associate this song with college days at all - possibly came during the later half of 1985 when there was relatively less focus on movies but more with project / interviews and such stuff. This one goes along with the 'nilavonRu kaNdEn' kinds where more memory is associated with CBE / Pollachi than Trichy. Very specifically the private buses that ran between Pollachi & Cbe with nice sound systems, played at tasteful volume / bass / treble setting.
Those who know about the geography around Palakkad may wonder why would anyone travel between Pollachi & Coimbatore if the start or destination involves Palakkad  (For those uninitiated ones : these three towns roughly form an equilateral triangle, Cbe north, Pollachi south and Palakkad west of both, so to go from Palakkad to Pollachi via Coimbatore is funny).
There were reasons partly related to buses again :-)
The right way to go from Palakkad to mid / south TN should be like Palakkad to Pollachi to Pazhani. (The corresponding rail road was meter gauge as far as I could remember with just one or two passenger trains a day). While both Palakkad and Pollachi are big towns, the travellers between these two were quite limited and so were the number of buses. That apart, except the few gov buses that ran between these two, others stopped at every village, even taking extra circuitry routes (e.g. one with Meenakshi puram, the railway station used in a couple of TFs, possibly by the Fazil group) - making the 40 KM travel take > 2 hours. Also the "last-bus" issue.
So, my typical travel was to catch a CBE bus standing at "kootuppAtha" of Palakkad (means "junction", where the Cbe & Pollachi roads merged together and my place of work was located as well). Didn't have to even go to Palakkad town or bus terminus. These came at 15 min interval and reached Ukkadam (Cbe) in 45 min or so. Add another hour, you're at Pollachi. Plus, you get great music on Cbe-Pollachi buses while Palakkad-Pollachi buses, regardless of fast gov ones or slow privates, were without music.
Then there was this "last bus" problem for my village at destination (until I got my own transportation / parents moved to town) and so to circumvent that I typically indulged in starting late and watching the 2nd show at Coimbatore. Means, starting from Cbe at 1 AM and add 4 hours travel, right in time for the first town bus in the morning :-) Thus went my monthly home-travel routine.
Those trips were wonderful musical experiences as the whole route had bus crews which typically had fantastic taste for music. (i.e. that jelled with mine).
'kaNNil enna kAr kAlam' - the song from a BM movie with Rajinikanth / Madhavi brings me those night travels afresh in mind!
Other than that, I hardly know anything about this movie
Don't even know the story or how it fared in the BO...

Some more bus talk...
One should travel inside other states (means not the main cities but small towns / villages) during 80's / 90's to appreciate the phenomenally advanced state that TN was!
Even a relatively better-off-in-roads Kerala didn't have that many bus services to interiors and the less talked about the condition of the buses the better. And, yes, except a few private buses in the Palakkad area, none had music in the state.
AP interiors had hardly any private bus coverage and the same seemed to be the case as much as I noticed during my travails in KA. Only those APSTC or KSRTC ones that were infrequent and definitely non-meesical. There was this Birla Cements township in a place called "Ammasandra" near Shimoga where I had to go thrice. The only possible mode of transport was by train to a nearby small station and request for pick-up / drop by the customer  (They more than compensated for the trouble with the superb guest house, phenomenal food -the best pulkA I ever had - etc, but posting here just to highlight the lack of buses to even civilized places not far from Bangalore, in 90's). The experiece was much worse in WB interiors. While great in train services, I'm not sure even MH can boast of great bus network.
That way TN's bus network is terrific! What makes TN buses even more special is the music! I'll credit the IR-mania as the sole reason for pAttu in patti-thotti buses thru-out TN. Why, even the gov run buses had to install music players at one point of time to match competition. I think Cheran, the most enterprising gov transport IMO, was the first to do that. Possibly they imported 1000's of semi-knocked-down (SKD) kits themselves and assembled with Cheran brand for their buses! Other gov buses were relatively slower per my observation. (Ofcourse, now there are no chEra / chOzha / pANdiyarkaL...ellAm TNSTC AyippOchchu).
Music @ buses, music @ tea-stalls & the now-disappeared-but-lasted-at-least-a-decade "recording centers" were three significant cultural impacts that rAsA had on TN! These "cutural impacts" I had seen unfolded right in front of my eyes and can shout for in any platform as significant rAsA-effects!
Thanks App for Kannil Enna .
Dont recall hearing this except perhaps once . I like another Shankarabaranam based melody Malare Malare very much.
This was the same movie which also had the Ilamai Idho spoof.
Lots of old posts to catch upon .
Btw some technical info of the Bass and rhythm of Ilamanadhil posted by Eddie Dinesh on FB.
Ilamanadhu is a great find...a deadly exercise for any bassie. Hope you folks noticed that the song is in 3/4, while the bass track in the Pallavi is set to 4/4 time signature. So, in the Pallavi its 4/4 bass over 3/4 rhythm structure.
To be very precise, the entire song is in 3/4 with tempo measure of 260. In the pallavi bass is set to 4/4 with a tempo measure of 175. Sheer brilliance of IR. For the rest of the song the bass plays in 3/4, but only in the Pallavi you come across this brilliant mathemagic. :-)
App,
Your bus journeys have been nicely explained and very much enjoyable.
Now coming to the Film UKNV, some basic facts that you said you are unaware of. The film was released in June 1985. IIRC it came exactly 2 weeks after Andha Oru Nimidam and the big clash between the two fizzled out and Thendrale Ennai Thodu released in between these two became a super hit.
The movie talked about the injustice meted out to one innocent man by the police department and YG Mahendra who acted as the brother of Madhavi played the innocent character and again if my memory serves me right some forest range issues will form the backdrop pf the story. BM had used this movie to let out his personal anger. During the period of late 84, Balu Mahendra was arrested for some passport related issues and the claim from the police side was that he had indulged in some fraudulent activities. It seems he was tortured like anything both physically and mentally and he used this movie to let out his anger. But he could not do it beyond a point as the same powers to be were there in 1985 also. So BM tweaked the story and went to Malayalam and made Yathra with Mammootty where he had shown the police excesses as well as he wanted.
As I mentioned earlier, movie failed commercially with songs being the exception. Great song with haunting lyrics penned by Vairamuthu and especially the lines
நான் உறங்கும் நாள் வேண்டும்
சாய்ந்து கொள்ள தோள் வேண்டும்
என் கண்ணில் நீர் வேண்டும்
சுகமாக அழ வேண்டும்
will make you feel the sadness that it intends to convey.
Regards
