Adding to his woes he falls ill for which operation becomes necessary , what happens next is climax.
Extra shots:
This type of story was never attempted before this movie
Aaha Vijaykumar’s role was more of a Xerox of our NT right from getup , tone etc
This is the first time NT acted in a Bhramin role
Sundaram first narrated the story to Mr YGP but it was rejected subsequently he narrated it to Mr. Shanmugam who in turn fixed an appointment with NT and the project started
NT wore his friend’s shirt , the first thing NT asked Sundaram was “ Whether it is a borrowed shirt as it was too loose for him”
Later he became a part of NT family
A neighbour of NT spoke to Kamala amma and praised NT that she had watched Veitnam veedu drama and remarked even their son could not speak Brahmin language like NT( They were Brahmin). NT looked with pride her wife Kamala a deserving applause right?
Irony is YGM has acted in drama under UAA banner as a tribute to NT
NT take on this movie :
PERFORMANCE:
As usual NT is back bone starting from scene 1 to climax he never acted he just lived. Disciplinarian in home, strict in office, dutious in office, staunch Brahmin but secular in thoughts(Respecting church father), allowing intercast marriage of his fellow worker, recommending works Manager Nandagopal though he dis respects him, he is self esteemed person which prevents him from asking an extension of service initially (He himself repents for it afterwards)
He is modern but follows tradition having Kudumi , remarking about current trend dressing sense of young girls
He even remarks with a sense of sad tone “ Padhavi Pona Odane Madhikavematengerengaleda”
He is denied his sofa and is regarded as a luggage by his daughter in Law
The climax sequences are sure to bring tears in eyes of viewers.
Prestige padmanabhan character is completely, neatly etched
Padmini fits the shoes and plays the second fiddle to NT but my father after seeing Vietnam Veedu Drama said G sakuntala did a splendid job
Ramaprabha, Srikanth , Nagesh were apt for their roles
Songs were top notch
This is the first movie which dealt with life of middle class Government officials retired life without any cinematic liberties , never before & never again
Final word:

Dear Satish,

Anand
can somebody confirm whether the old hubber Mahan Ram, is the actor in 'once more?' and as mentioned in few articles, his father was a friend of NT, who is he?
This fantastic reply from ‘groucho070’ in an older post should get into the people’s thick heads, who criticizes NT for over acting :---
(I note your self-describing avatar sums up a lot of your own preference in screen performances. Not only its two-dimensional, but is very self-destructive.
But your remark pulled me back in action in NT thread. Sorry guys, been away again.
Let's talk about Gouvaram.
Gouvaram to me, is, what Citizen Kane is to Hollywood. It's groundbreaking film, one of the greatest analysis of personality that had been displayed on Tamil screen.
Barrister Rajinikanth is not an ordinary guy. He shouts for attention, he is arrogant, egostical, selfish, but intelligent. Perhaps too intelligent that he led to him to suicidal path. Defeat killed him. He was too confident of his ability, and when things started crumbling he knew that he will not descent, but just fall.
To display the personality trait associated with this character, you can't use restrain. And yet, towards the last scene, when his wife comes to tell him of his defeat, he is speechless. Just tiny gestures and eye movement. All his energy has been spent...if you note in the earlier scenes when he discourse, discusses, argues, defends, fights his way to prove that he is right or he can be right.
Rajinikanth is not an enigmatic man. He is there for everyone to see. He does not hesitate to tell them off. Diplomacy is a foreign word for him. He is a bull that punches his way through the destination.
Thus, the technique NT uses is what is now known as 'overacting'. The message is clearer; we get to know his role better. The quiet moment comes towards the end, when we felt like a heavy thunderstorm is over. Sudden silence that is defeaning. That is the power of NT's performance.
Overacting is part of NT's vast array of techniques. In fact, he owns 'overacting'. Anyone else who overacts can only be accused of trying to copy NT.
So, Saamy, take another look at Gouvaram and study NT's thechnique. We are glad that you have taken a crack at it once. You saw and you are wondering what's the fuss about. There is something in there. Go and see it again with a new understanding. Go through this thread and try to understand why grown up men and women can laugh and cry watching another grown up man acting.
Go ahead, friend, take another look. It's worth it.)

Gold Star Golden Photos of NT's are Super
Watch NT's Super Hit Movie Thyagam on Sunday 02.12.12 at 7.00 pm in Murasu TV
While I’m still on a mission in reading all the posts on NT from ‘NT part 1’, time to time I find interesting write-ups and info which I cut and paste in order to read them in a later time. Thorough analyses from Mr Murali Srinivas are treats to read. And Saradha, (where is she now?) her articles are brilliant too. Here is one of Mr Murali’s remark he made on 26 March 2007 (NT part 2 page 102) when answering posts by some useless ‘mood changers’. I quote: ‘Balumahendra is not the type of person who will do remake’ (referring NT movie ‘Vellai Roja’)
I have a question to those ‘mood changers’: why NT’s movie career has to be assessed under the value of Balu mahendra or Bharathiraja or etc? Then what about Krishnan Panchu, KSG, BR Bandulu or APN and Sridhar? Weren’t they fantastic directors at their time? Nobody should be bothered to answer to the people with half - baked knowledge of NT movie career.
Coming to Mr Murali’s earlier comment on BM didn’t like remakes, are you sure? I’m not a fan of BM, but I thought he was a good director too until I watched ‘Julie Ganapathy’!! What a carbon copy!! Does the movie ‘Misery’ rings a bell? In which James Caan and Kathy Bates acted and Kathy Bates received an Oscar for her role in it. BM even copied ‘Julie Ganapathy’s screenplay and dialogues!!! Watch it few times, you will realize it.
That was during my life in UK, I was having a chat with my English friend in the office and happened to mention the movie (Julie Ganapathy) I watched the previous night. When I started narrating the story line, she stopped me and said “it’s Misery, isn’t it?” I got embarrassed. Then I borrowed the vhs video cassette of ‘Misery’ from the local library and watched it. Except the ‘masala’ items for the Tamil viewers, the movie’s screenplay, and even some dialogues are exactly as in ‘Misery’. Snow in the original movie has changed to rain in the ‘remake’. Instead of pig, it’s a dog, plus an ‘inviting’ dance from Ramya Krishnan.
To make my fury worse, on the title of Julie Ganapathy, it states ‘story, screenplay, dialogues and direction- balu mahendra!!!” After that, my least respect for BM was gone and started thinking that his other movies could be also ‘kind of’ remake too, like the current directors do, picking stories from ‘here and there’.
What I’m trying to point out here is; people come to this thread just want to pour out whatever (little) they know about NT and it doesn’t mean they are all experts. They don’t need to be answered.
By the way, this is an over-due response, but I only found out about this thread and joined with you, kindred spirits recently!
Whether NT over-played or under-played he always made sure the respected scenes are thoroughly enjoyable. If we take his romantic scenes as examples; I can mention one for each. I watched ‘Irumbu thirai’ recently and it is one of the movies where NT showed his subtle but superb performance. There is a scene when NT describes Vyjayanthimala about his lady love and how he met her. It was funny but very sweet to watch. As NT describes it, Vyjayanthimala gets really jealous and knowing that, he carries on until he tells her how old they were then. Fantastic scene. Secondly, one of NT’s over-played romantic scenes is (there are many, but one I could remember at the moment ) in ‘Deivamagan’ where NT goes after Jayalalitha and makes funny moves to attract her attention. His body language is more than subtle but equally enjoyable and sweet!
