My theatre experiences....

'KAVARIMAN' release

When Thirisoolam was kalakking throughout Tamil Nadu, Kavariman was the next film released (201st film) with entirely different team with which NT never done before. SP Muthuraman as director, Babu as cinematographer, Ilaiyaraja as MD and Pramila as pair along with Ravichandran in a guest roll (after Motor Sundaram Pillai). Because of these new and different combination, fans are waiting to receive it.

Kavariman was released in Mount Road area at Midland theatre (now Jayapradha), but special morning show was arranged for fans association at Shanthi, as usual. At that time Shanti theatre was in 'vizhaa kOlam' because of the huge hit of Thirisoolam all over TN with continous packed houses. Fans were in full joy.

Every evening there was big crowd of fans at Shanti, with somany circles of small small groups discussing about the housefull shows, collections and other special matters about TS from various centres. Dhinathanthi and Dinakaran parers will be sent by fans from other major cities, with advertisements and they will will come round in the hands of fans there.

Mr. parthasarathy, the cheif of NT mandram for Chepak area (in which we were members), collected money from all and brought the tickets from 'thalaimai mandram' at Theynampet, on previous day itself. Next day Kavariman is going to be released, and previous day we gathered at Midland theatre and watching the decorations by fans with flags, banners and serial bulbs, . We, on behalf of our mandram, ordered a big garland for the main cut-out. We were there upto midnight with friends Viji, Sethu, Veeraragavan, 'Palmgrove' Chandrasekhar, 'Maris' Chandrasekhar, Guruji, Anand, 'kudandhai' Sreedhar and somany fans.

Next day morning we gathered at 8 itself at Shanthi, to celebrate the release of 'Kavariman' with special show, which is going to start at 9. It was full and full of fan's show and when the show started and NT was shown, 'aarathi' was taken by fans in front of the screen, flowers and coins were thrown towards the screen.

The movie was enjoyed by fans fully with too much applauses. It was like a new wave movie, which NT never done before. The applause was in peak at NT's action, when he saw his wife Pramila in bed with Ravichandran.

In the evening we gathered at Midland, there was also big crowd, blocking General Paters road. Inside the compus, director Muthurana and Cameraman Babu were standing among the fans and talking with them. Crackers were fired up continously and we hope Kavariman will get success in Midland like Andhaman Kaadhali, which was the recent success in the same theatre. But the result was negative....

புதிய பறவை - மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை பார்த்தேன்.(எத்தனையாவது முறை?). படத்தில் வரும் பாடல்கள், நடிப்பு மற்றும் வசனங்கள் பற்றி பலமுறை பலர் (நான் உள்பட) இந்த திரியின் முந்தைய பாகங்களில் அலசியிருப்பதால் இப்போது அதை விட்டு விடலாம்.

ஒவ்வொரு முறை பார்க்கும் போதும் சலிப்பேதுமில்லாமல் பார்க்க முடிவதற்கு இதன் திரைக்கதை ஒரு முக்கிய காரணம். இது water tight screen play என்று சொல்லப்படும் வகையை சார்ந்தது. (நன்றி- Chasing a crooked shadow மற்றும் அதன் வங்காள பிரதி).

முதல் தடவை பார்த்த போது இந்த திரைக்கதை அமைப்பு மிகவும் யோசிக்க வைத்தது. இந்த படத்தின் திரைக்கதையை நான் எப்போதும் Reverse-ல் இருந்து யோசிப்பேன். படத்தில் வரும் எல்லா பாத்திரங்களுமே (நாகேஷ்,மனோரமா தவிர) நடிகர் திலகத்தின் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு எதிராக காய் நகர்த்துபவர்கள் ஆனால் அது audience-க்கு தெரியாத வண்ணம் காட்சியமைப்பு இருக்கும்.

இரண்டாவதாக வரும் சௌகார் முதல் மனைவியின் அனைத்து குணாதிசயங்களையும் பிரதிபலிக்கும் போது NT மற்றும் சரோஜா தேவிக்கு ஏற்படும் அதிர்ச்சி. ஆனால் அதை அவருக்கே சொல்லி கொடுத்ததே சரோஜா தேவி என்பது நாம் யோசிக்கும்போது தான் புரியும். (உ.ம் பால் பேணி). அது போல சௌகாரின் கைரேகையை எடுக்க சொல்லும் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் ஒ ஏ கே தேவர், NT-க்கு எதிராக பயன்படுத்தத்தான் செய்திருக்கிறார் என்பதும் பிறகே புரியும்.

இப்படி படம் முடிந்த பிறகும் ரசிகனை கதையை பற்றி அதன் காட்சியமைப்பை பற்றி யோசிக்க வைத்த திரைப்படங்கள் தமிழில் குறைவாகவே வெளி வந்துள்ளன. அவற்றில் புதிய பறவைக்கு ஒரு முக்கிய இடம் உண்டு.

மேலும் 1964-ல் இப்படி ஒரு முயற்சி மேற்கொண்ட நடிகர் திலகம் தயாரிப்பாளர் என்ற நிலையிலும் சரி, ஒரு உச்ச நட்சத்திரமாக ஜொலித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் நேரத்தில் தன் இமேஜ் பற்றி கவலைப்படாமல் anti ஹீரோவாக நடிக்க துணிந்த ஒரு நடிகர் என்ற முறையிலும் நமது பாராட்டுக்கு உரியவராகிறார்.

நடிகர் திலகத்தின் ரசிகர்களுக்கும் பொதுவான ரசிகர்களுக்கும், ஏன் எல்லா தரப்பு மக்களையும் அன்றும், இன்றும் என்றும் கவர்ந்திழுக்கும் படம் புதிய பறவை.

In NT songs VCD saw 2 songs from En Magan - "Neengal athanai perum uthamar thana sollungal" & " Ponnukkenna azhagu.."

1. "Neengal..." is played twice - once NT sings it with Balaji, VSR, Manohar etc., surrounding him and next where NT is in a Vivekanandar like get-up.

2. " Ponnukkenna.." with Manjula (his pair in the movie ??)

Enmagan DVD is not available - like to know more abt.this film..

Excellent fighting scene with Justin in a fish market.

Often get confused with "Thyagam" & "Thyagi". Thyagi is the film where villains will pluck away NT's finger nails and blood will be oozing from all his 10 fingers!! isnt it?? bcoz, I've seen this in Bhuvanewari theatre with my parents during my school days. Just a vague remembrance....

En Magan - Balajee padam. Remake of Be Imman (Hindi). NT did two roles. A smuggler and a honest police cop living in Ooty. The smuggler would be part of a gang which would indulge in loots etc. The introduction song is what you had mentioned "Neengal athhanai perum Uthhamarthaana sollungal" where NT would come in different get ups and the tune of this song would be different from the one which comes later. NT would fall in love with Manjula, decide to turn a new leaf. On the day of Betrothel, the gang headed by Manohar (through another disguised person) would approach NT and request him to open a locker. NT is supposed to be a great exponent in opening up lockers. NT while trying to open the locker would be implicated in a murder. He would escape to Ooty where he would meet the honest cop living with his only daughter Roja Ramani. The smuggler would get attached to the family and they will also treat him as their sibling. But Police will come and nab the younger NT. The other gang members will also converge there and Manjula would also be there. In a clash with the villain group, the cop NT would be killed. Now the younger NT would take care of the family. How he manages to clear all charges against him and bring to book all the bad guys forms the rest of the story. Other than the songs you had mentioned, there are two more songs. One an item no by Leena Das - a Bombay girl and the other song- the famous " Soan Pafty Sona Pafty" sung by TMS and Kovai Soundararajan for both NTs.

The movie was supposed to release on Aug 15th of 1974 (the next film after Thangapathakkam) but due to the strike by the theatres protesting against the steep Entertainment Tax levied by MuKa government which went on for 5 days starting from Aug 15th, the movie got released on Aug 21st. It ran for 101 days in our Madurai -New cinema.

As you had mentioned, the DVDs of 5 Balajee films are yet to hit the market. Thangai, En Thambi, Thirudan, Raja and En Magan.

'என் மகன்' படம் நடிகர்திலகம் இரட்டை வேடத்தில் நடித்தது. இரட்டை வேடமென்றால் தந்தை மகனோ, அல்லது சகோதரர்களோ அல்ல. முன்பின் உறவில்லாத இரட்டை வேடம். இளைய சிவாஜியை, பெரியவர் தத்தெடுத்துக்கொள்வார். பெரிய சிவாஜியின் ஒரே மகள் ரோஜாரமணி.

கதாநாயகி மஞ்சுளா. எங்கள் தங்க ராஜாவுக்கு அடுத்து இரண்டாவது படம்.

(ஆனால் முதலில் ஒப்பந்தமாகி ஷுட்டிங் ஆரம்பித்த படம் 'மன்னவன் வந்தானடி'. அதில் பாழடைந்த மண்டபத்தில் தர்பார் நடத்தும் தர்மராஜா (சிவாஜி,), மஞ்சுளாவிடம் பேசிய முதல் வசனம், "நீ என் எதிரியின் பாசறையிலிருந்து வந்தவளாயிற்றே. உன்னை எப்படி நம்புவது?" )

என் மகனில் வில்லன்களாக வருபவர்கள் டி.ஐ.ஜி.யாக வரும் வி.எஸ். ராகவனின் மகன் பாலாஜி, மஞ்சுளாவின் தந்தையாக வரும் மேஜர், மற்றும் மனோகர்.

'நீங்கள் அத்தனை பேரும் உத்தமர்தானா சொல்லுங்கள்' பாடல் படத்தில் இரண்டு முறை வரும். முதல் தடவை சிவாஜி, மனோகர் மற்றும் அவரது கூட்டாளிகள் கோயில் சிலைகளையும், கடைகளையும் கொள்ளையடிக்கும்போது வரும். (அதிலும் ஒரு அப்பாவிப்பெண், தன்னுடைய நகைகளையெல்லாம் திருவோட்டிலுள்ள, மைதா மாவில் கழற்றி வைக்கும்போது, அந்தப்பெண் மீது பரிதாபமாக இருக்கும். இப்படி, இமேஜ் பற்றி கவலைப்பாடாமல் நடித்து நடித்துதான், நடிகர்திலகம் பெண்களிடையேயும், பாமர ரசிகர்களிடையேயும் ஆதரவைப்பெற தவறினார் என்பது மறுக்க முடியாத உண்மை).

அதே பாடல் இரண்டாவது முறை, மேஜர், பாலாஜி, வி.எஸ்.ராகவன் ஆகியோர் கலந்துகொள்ளும் பார்ட்டியில் பாடுவார். இரண்டாவது பாடலில் உள்ளர்த்தமாக அரசியல் பின்னிப்பிணைந்திருக்கும்.

'ராஜாவில்' பத்மா கன்னாவைத் தொடர்ந்து 'என் மகனில்' ஸ்நேகலதா என்ற பம்பாய் நடன நடிகையை இறக்குமதி செய்திருந்தார் பாலாஜி. எல்.ஆர்.ஈஸ்வரி பாடிய 'சொல்லாதே சொல்லாதே ஊரார்க்கு சொல்லாதே நான் என்ன தந்தேன் என்று' என்ற பாடலுக்கு ஆடுவார்.

நடிகர்திலகத்துக்கும் மஞ்சுளாவுக்கும் டூயட் பாடல் 'பொண்ணுக்கென்ன அழகு பூவுக்கென்ன பெருமை' டி.எம்.எஸ்., சுசீலா இணையில்.

நகைச்சுவைக்கு வி.கே.ஆர்., மனோரமா இணை. இருந்தாலும் சிரிப்புக்கு பஞ்சம் அதிகம். பார்க்க வேண்டிய நல்ல பொழுதுபோக்குப் படம் 'என் மகன்'.

இதன் டி.வி.டி., கடைகளில் கிடைக்கிறது என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.

மை காட்... என்மகன் பற்றி விவரத்தை போஸ்ட் பண்ணிட்டு பார்க்கிறேன்.

முரளியும் அந்தப் படம் பற்றி எழுதியிருக்கிறார்.

அது புதிய பறவைக்கு உள்ள சிறப்பம்சம்.

பொதுவாகவே முதல் முறை ஒரு சஸ்பென்ஸ் படம் பார்த்து அதன் முடிவு தெரிந்துவிட்டால், அடுத்தடுத்த தடவைகள் பார்க்கும்போது, ஏற்கெனவே தெரிந்த முடிவே நம் மனதில் வந்துகொண்டிருக்கும். (உதாரணம் அதே கண்கள்).

ஆனால் புதிய பறவையை பலதடவைகள் பார்த்திருந்தபோதிலும், மீண்டும் பார்க்கும்போது சரோஜாதேவி, வி.கே.ஆர்., எம்.ஆர்.ராதா போன்றோர் மீண்டும் சாதாரண கதாபத்திரங்களாகத்தான் தெரிவார்களே தவிர, அது துப்பறியும் கும்பல் என்பது நம் மனதுக்கு வரவே வராது. லதாவை காதலியாகவும், வி.கே.ஆரை அவரது அப்பாவாகவும், ரங்கனை வில்லனாகவும் தான் நினைக்கதோன்றும்.

அதனால்தான் முடிவில் நடிகர்திலகம் ஏமாறும்போது, ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் அவர் மேல் பரிதாபம் ஏற்படும்.
