I knew someone from TWU who moved closely with Kannadasan whenever he came to Malaysia. Apparently the widely held view that Kannadasan was an alcoholic is false. True he would always have a glass of brandy with him, but that was never neat and he would sip from it (as opposed to drink), thus keeping him in a state of bliss without being drunk. :P
During my stint as a radio programme producer, once we called up Vaali for an interview, but "annan" was not in a state to do an interview.

Trouble is, Kavignar himself painted a negative picture on him. Oru Koopaiyile En Kudiyiruppu. Then, the mention in the books, especially about getting double permit or something. The culprit is Kannadhasan himself, so people bought it lock, stock and barrel. He must have been laughing his behind off, when people label him as kudikaaran, while others walk around pretending to be saint. Okay, subject veera threadla oduthu.
endha thread? its after all about kannadasan.
and I am ok with his drinking habits. if he needed to be on a perpetual high for us to get the gem of songs, so be it. why the need to be judgemental. after all his death had nothing to do with his habit.
Yeah, that part of him is his personal business.
In fact, it helped to fuel some of the greatest songs (Vasantha Maligai songs are experience in writing). One of my current fav, that always running on my mind, is Naalai Muthal Kudikkamaattein song. Love the melody and how the words fit in and the tenacity (in Italics):

apparently the director wanted a song saying that the character will not drink anymore. but kavignar said, "endha kudikkaaranum appadi udanE neruththa maattaan, naalailErndhu kudikka maattEnnu vEnaa solluvaan." and thus the song was born. :)
Actually it was with Balaji. He kidded with Balaji saying, "Neeyum kudikkaaran, Naanum kudikkaran.." then something along the line you mentioned :D
I mean who were they trying to kid. It's a beautiful song, superb melody with brilliant sanggathi.
And to top it up, Kavignar was being audacious enough to call god a Kudikkaaran. This is the risque stuff that puts him on higher pedestal. Sets him apart from other lyricist of his and current era.
I understand that the first two lines were written by kavignar while he was returning after meeting kamarajar and kamarajar has advised him to stop drinking.. kavignar also promised to kamaraj that he will abide by that and the promise lasted until his car stopped in a signal and he wrote those lines in his diary and started drinking in the car itself.. later on he used the same lines in that film and he was adamant the lines shouldnt be changedQuote:
