I am only the messenger... read between the lines.
KV, what you are asking for is utopia.... 1st and most important criteria is BO performance, which of course = sustenance.
Ennathu Poonai-ya ? :face-palm:
NOV, Chennai-la Ajith-ai meet paNNuvIngaLA appO? (Reading bwteen the lines)
NOV, the idea might sound utopian, I agree, but I don’t think it’s that impractical.
Who decides BO? The fans, right? (yeah, satellite rights, etc come into the picture, but the reason behind all this is again the fans, ain’t it?). The movie guys think that the fans will make only a certain kind of film a BO hit and keep dishing out the same thing. The fans, naturally, start believing that this is the best of their idol and loyally consume whatever is thrown at them. It’s like a cycle of assumption that can only cause a viscous circle.
If a simple movie brings out the best of abilities in a star, would the fans be unhappy with what they’re getting to see? Who sets the rules that the rural audience will accept only masala films? Then what can one say of the earlier films of MGR/Sivaji or the ones during the 70s and 80s? Were they not commercial hits in towns and villages? Not that they were technically superior, but they at least cared a little for the content, along with the other aspects of entertainment. Think of more names, Bhaygaraj or Visu films. Even such films are any day better than what we get to see in the ‘mass movies’ these days.
The commerce in the movie industry isn’t really as rigid as it is made out to be. One needn’t even go as far as the French or German new-wave to understand this. Take movies from this year. I’m pretty sure Aadukalam and Yudham Sei would feature among the favorite movies this year of many people (not just in the hub). Dhanush is like any other contemporary hero who enjoys a fairly good fan following. And aadukalam wasn’t run-of-the-mill surely, but it was commercially successful, wasn’t it? Doesn’t it indicate something? Shouldn’t the movie guys, and us, the fans, ideally be taking cues from it? Let guys like Ajith and Vijay act in 3-4 movies on a trot that are not like the typical fare. It’d then be interesting to see how that changes the dynamics in the industry. Who knows, perceptions and expectations could probably undergo a sea change.
Or how about a little poll here? Options:
1) I’m extremely happy with what I’m getting, I want nothing more from my star. This is his best. Let him keep doing this all the time.
2) Well, as a fan I’m fine with this, but I’d be doubly happy if I get to see my star in varied roles and better cinema.
Let’s see what the fans here have to say. That’ll prove an indicator of sorts, wouldn’t it?
Like how the movie grossing economics has changed over the years in the industry, similarly, the audience is constantly changing as well. By dumbing them down, we’re just piling up the misery.
Just a couple of points in answer to your post, KV.
1. A man with almost no talent at all built a power base that is impossible to replicate in future. He went on to capture the highest post the land had to offer.
2. Danush earns 6 crores per movie; Ajith has been offered 18 crores for his latest.
NOV, I don’t really see that answering my question. Nonetheless, if one tries to think of these astronomical figures, where would it trace back to?
This is how I see it:
1) I make an ordinary movie, knowing well it has nothing fresh/interesting in it, but will please the loyal fans.
2) Fans lap it up --> collections rocket up --> BO hit --> producer “I’m very happy, I’m very happy”
3) Next movie proposal --> same masala --> bigger paycheck, thanks to the previous BO --> back to step 1.
Keep this looping for some years and you’ll realize that those numbers don’t seem all that ridiculous after all!
This is why I said in the beginning of this discussion: fans should ensure that such movies make poor collections. Five movies in a line this way and the star has very few options left:
1) pipe down and reduce his salary
2) out-of-market, accept retirement.
3) megaserials, TV shows, jatti vilambarams.
The sane actors will then choose to start experimenting with their roles and be more welcoming to simpler stuff.
Also, to clarify, I'm not expecting these guys to embrace, what's popularly known as 'art flims'. Which is the reason I mentioned names like Nolan, Mani and VB. These guys also make big-budget films with big star cast, but they know where to pin them down.
I'm not against money-spinning blockbusters, but first get the basics right, is all I'm suggesting.
