Polladhavan (1980).
Plot holes as big as Rajini's bellbottoms. Like, where was the Letchumi's nephew when the murder took place? This and many question that should not bother you.
It's a wonder how film watching experience changes with the company you keep, in this case my wife who is a big fan of Rajini's comedy.
Yes, believe it or not, the film has its rib-tickling moments, namely the flashback with Sri Priya. Rajini pretending to be injured and getting Sri Priya to nurse him back had some really hilarious moments.
Then, the serious side of course, when Letchumi confronts Rajini and tries to either run away or complain to the police. Nice cat and mouse game, with Rajini nicely showing off dark side. Speaking of police, there could have been passing of baton thing between V. Gopalakrishnan to Delhi Ganesh to play the stereotype cop, luckily DG became a better actor.
Speaking of V. Gopalakrishnan, his reasoning behind the accusation that Letchumi was the killer could have made Sherlock HOlmes turn in his grave, if at all he was real.
All in all, it's Rajini's showcase. Beginning as a real menace, a taunt, an animalistic being, he later starts to show his more human side, but not without the heavy dose of "style", those trademark speedy walk, gestures, and red-tinted sunglass even inside the house at night .
Can anyone confirm whether this is a remake? I have a feeling it is. Other than that, if this film was done ten years earlier, it would have been easily a NT film, coz Mukta Sreenivasan, the director, was making this sort of film with NT.
Conclusion: After revisits, this thirty year old film still works albeit some stupid moments.
Forgot to mention. All the songs rock. Atho Varandi, Chinna Kanne, Nane Endrum Raja and of course, the song that seemed to talk about both Kannadhasan and Rajini - Naan Polladhavan!
