Vaali wrote an interesting series on MGR in Thuglak magazine last year. But there were some negligible gaps in his story but one fact which he conveniently did not write prompted me to email Thuglak. I pointed out that inconsistency but unfortunately the series ended abruptly after my email. I am not so sure whether my email was the cause but probably Cho did not want to take the risk by asking Vaali to continue writing since there are still people around who know the history.
I will also write about several inconsistencies which I had had observed in other leading magazines like Kumudham, Ananda Vikatan, Bhagya, Kunkumam, Kalki etc. This I will do from time to time after refreshing my memory. But before that I will narrate in a nutshell what Vaali wrote in Thuglak which warranted my email to that publication.
Vaali proudly said that MGR personally asked him to write all the songs for 'Padahotti' after having relationship issues with Kaviarasar Kannadhasan. When Vaali sat to write in the office of Saravana films he reminisced that at one time it was Kaviarasu Kannadhasan who wrote all the songs for this company under the direction of K. Shankar like 'Panathottam'. MGR was immensely satisfied with Vaali. Vaali said that this was his second film for MGR after 'Nallavan Vazhvaan'. This was where he did not state the truth.
Many old timers would recall that somewhere in 1964 MGR made a controversial statement to the effect that Kamraj was his leader and that Annadurai was his mentor. Of course, this irked the DMK cadres who boycotted his film 'En Kadamai' which was released around this time. This film is one masterpiece of MGR with beautiful songs by Kannadhasan, music by Viswanathan Ramamurthy, a suspense-filled story and able direction. Incidentally this was the only film where Balaji acted with MGR. But it failed at the box office for obvious reasons. There were rumors abound at that time that MGR was trying to be in the good books of Kamraj who was the then CM of Tamil Nadu to avoid being put under the scanner of the Congress Party for tax issues.
MGR immediately went about to repair this collateral damage through producing his own venture 'Deiva Thaai' purportedly produced by R.M. Veerappan. Since he had bad blood with Kannadhasan he was recommended Vaali who already made a name for himself after 'Karpagam'(1963). Vaali knowing the circumstances surrounding the dismal failure of 'En Kadamai' wrote that all-time hit song 'Moondrezhuthil En Mooch Irukkum' and also the other songs. That song sent the reassuring message to the DMK cadres that MGR's heart, soul and spirit is with the DMK and not Congress. Of course, after this film and particularly this song MGR's image was given an fresh impetus and boost.
Why Vaali overlooked this pertinent milestone in MGR's political career is a question mark. Or, did he deliberately jumped to 'Padahotti' so as to avoid any controversy is a question mark. Interestingly, in the same series Vaali did mention that MGR once asked him to explain to a large audience as to that particular controversial statement. And that was after he became CM - almost fifteen years later.
Can anyone who was privy to that particular statement by MGR throw some light? I sincerely seek to be pardoned for writing in English as I can read-only Tamil being from an English medium education fraternity.
In my next posting I will write about my personal meeting with MGR in Malaysia in 1970 and also of my visitation to Ramavara Garden with Associate Director Pugazhenthi (erstwhile deputy of AC Thirulogachander) in 2008.

1965- 1966 வருடங்களில் வெளிவந்த தென்னிந்திய திரைப்படங்களில் வசூலில் ஒரு மாபெரும் சகாப்தத்தை உருவாக்கிய படங்கள் . அன்றைய கால கட்டங்களில் மக்கள் திலகத்திற்கு விநியோகஸ்தர்கள் வைத்த மறு பெயர் ''evergreen hero - box office hero - mgr.''
