#227 கட வீதி கல கலக்கும், எங்க அக்கா மக, அவ நடந்து வந்தா
(அம்மன் கோவில் கிழக்காலே, 1986 )
The standard galAttA number for masAlA as well as village-type movies of 80's, especially when a popular hero is in the mix. One loses count as to how many such numbers rAsA had done during his career - with mELam, shenoy, flute & other standard repertoire, making them racy , dance-worthy and catchy. The lyricists possibly had a tougher time as they had to match the speed of rAsA in coming up with tunes / arrangements for such numbers. SPB obviously is at ease here, belting out the number effortlessly with his thuLLal and kEli tone. (MV too had done a number of similar songs credibly without much ado. These two are unmatched in IR-era in this area. TMS ruled in days prior).
A typical rAsA fan of 80's was getting weary with such numbers over a time period. Most chose to listen to the other 'novel' or 'melodious' numbers by recording them. OTOH, the public (or whoever were "broadcasting" to the public by loudspeakers) always favoured such numbers and one had to listen to them mostly involuntarily. Personally, though I won't go great lengths to stop & listen, record etc such type of songs, I never found them boring. Simply because, there were ingradients that IR mixed in cleverly to keep one amused. For example, I love the great energy in the first line of the saraNam of this song and wait to listen to it :-) Also, the song overall never bored me that I had to turn mind off. In addition, all rAsa themmAngus are 'ear-friendly' - unlike those made by others that are sheer noise - and one gets to listen to some sweet sounds / melodious portions even on such numbers.
Interestingly, not all such numbers became as famous as this one. Obviously the success of the movie & star involved were the reasons for the popularity / playback it enjoyed.
:bluejump::happydance::swinghead:
wonderful job!
Vinatha.
Amman Koyil Kizhakkale is one heck of an album. Love all the songs and what a variety of songs. Great posts App
I simply can't get out of Ada Machamulla from Chinna Veedu thanks to V_S and App's posts.
app, sorry for ruining the mood here, but shouldn't it be Chinna mAni kuyilE instead of kuyilu?
Not at all, groucho, I too thought about it but didn't fix it :-(
Actually I sing it 'kuyiloo' all the time and that's how it got reflected  (BTW, I always get distracted with that 'teeeng' guitar sound at the end of kuyilE & mayilE and that could be another reason)...
nanRi baroque & rajkumarc!
I'm divided whether to do Kamal or BR next...may be BR as there's just one song...
#228 போகுதே போகுதே என் பைங்கிளி வானிலே
(கடலோரக்கவிதைகள், 1986 )
From an adiyAL to villain to hero. That too, 'kAdhal pirivil sOgappAttu pAdum' hero
That was what Satyaraj -who did that menacing mottai, dark goggles terror figure in nooRAvadhu nAL - became in kadalOrakkavidhaikaL. And BR had that sadistic pleasure of making Sinnappa dAs cry for Jennifer. Rather than becoming a laughing stock & unintentional humor to public, the whole gimmick actually worked  While the mileau set up by BR was one important reason for that, the more powerful factor was the combo of our thread nAyaks - IR & SPB! Me and a collegue too had fallen for the trickery by these masters and had our throats choked while watching the movie...this scene was quite moving (though the whole song wasn't on screen IIRC) :-)
Well, we didn't exactly warm up to the whole movie that way (e.g. the climax scene wasn't goosebump stuff but still made tolerable by the BGM). The whole movie had terrific BGM apart from the manasaippizhiyum songs. kodiyilE & adi AththAdee took the top spots with SJ in terrific form (PJ & IR were excellent as well) but they also had phenomenal melody / orchestration and other techniques. Relatively less catchy melody and 'nothing-new-kind-of orchestration' was what got offered to the SPB song. But the capabilities of the singer came to the fore and it measured up to the expectations, creating the necessary emotional connect! No wonder we give SPB the top crown for versatility among all singers of TFM regardless of the time frame!
Like I mentioned in the IR-duet-songs thread spearheaded by V_S-ji, I always associate 'kadalOrakkavidhaikaL' with rainy Kerala. One of our associates those days used to identify Walayar this way : "Take a bus from Coimbatore to Palakkad and get down where it starts raining - that'll be Walayar" :-)
It used to be such a marked difference from the rain-shadow area of Madukkarai / Podanur / Kuniyamuthur kind of places (worst cases, Palladam / Tiruppur) to move towards the west through the 'kaNavAy'...and the moment you hit the TN-Kerala border, the sudden change in weather during June is quite striking! With rain comes the small river that divides the states, the dam / reservoir that is visible from the highway overflowing with water, followed by the tall teak trees and the rocky terrain...very interesting and sudden landscape change there! Being a passway between hills, it used to be very windy during the monsoon as well (AdikkARRil ammiyum paRakkum levels).
I thought Kadalora Kavithaigal was shot around Muttom. App, BTW this is a tipping point: I always wondered if you can run a similar thread to discuss popular films and the places they were shot: Given your geography expertise, it should be easy for you :smile2: And a great Discovery channel for the rest of us :-D

Pogudhe Pogudhe is a nice melancoly song. Thanks
The telugu version "Aradhana" that had Chiranjeevi, Suhasini and Radhika had all the songs sung by SPB.. (Still lacks the IR punch ,, )

BTW, al_gates, sorry for creating some confusion with my post.
kadOrakkavidhaikaL the movie has nothing to do with Coimbatore / Palakkad / Walayar / Kerala at all :-) As clearly indicated on screen, those were from the Kumari mAvattam. It's my nostalgic memories that invoke places I lived in during the arrival of the album / movie / songs.
We had a couple of KH movies already in 1986 (punnagai mannan, vikram). While there seems to be at least two more KH movies with SPB/IR (of them one a "dub", one an "oldie"), it may be spicier to jump to a RK movie prior to visiting them...
Well, mAveeran didn't have any SPB song - all MV show. The other RK/IR movie had 2 and we'll have them today & tomorrow.
Wasn't Kadalorakavithigal a BR movie staring Sathyaraj and Rekha? I have not seen the movie, but really loved the song "Poguthey poguthey" by SPB , kind of love related emotional song!, I did not think Sathyarj was apt for this movie, Karthik would have been better. AFAIK, I dont think this movie was a hit!
There was a song by SPB along with a Female singer (sunantha ??? ) called "Oru maalai sooriyan malayai parthathu malai adivaarthile'.... some thing along these line, it is one hell of tune composed by IR. Can some one tell me the name of the movie pls ?
Adhu maalai chandiran - I think it is unnai vaazhthi paadugiren *ing Parthiban
Param,
kadalOrakkavidhaikaL had a decent run, otherwise it wouldn't have been possible for Satyaraj to have the career he had. (Ofcourse, he had other Manivannan movies in the pipeline that ensured his longevity but this had its impact as well)
BR himself launched his next movie, vEdham pudhidhu, with Satyaraj (that too dropping IR). He couldn't have ventured so boldly with a recent flop
#229 என்னம்மா கண்ணு சௌக்யமா?
(மிஸ்டர் பாரத், 1986 , மலேசியா வாசுதேவனுடன்)
Fun song with some drums / guitar / trumpet sounds. Featuring Rajinikanth & Sathyaraj on screen. Another SPB-MV number in our compilation, after 'engengum kaNdEnammA' and 'namma modhalALi'. Like 'namma modhalALi', for an AVM movie, where SPB sings for the hero and MV for the anti-hero character. Some loLLu / ridicule stuff in the lyrics to rev up the movie proceedings I think. (Didn't have a chance to watch this movie, every attempt to watch the song on youtube didn't last beyond a minute thanks to some disturbance or other).
I have heard this song mostly on buses or loudspeakers / involuntarily. Never had a great liking for it but compelled to document it here because this was a hit song. I never thought this was so popular (mainly because I was out of TN and its arumai-perumai didn't reach Palakkad) but going by the fact that a recent Dhanush movie remixed it, it should have been popular at the time of arrival. eppadiyO, ennamO, one more number for the IR-SPB listtu :-)
Ennamma kannu is quite a popular number. A sathyarah movie was named after the song, too.
App,

B(K) & Plum,
I agree the problem is with me :-) I believe the 'ennammA kaNNu' phrase starts the song (followed by the grand trumpet / drums). My mind turns the 'irritated mode' on as soon as that phrase comes up (certain things create strong aversion instantaneously for unknown reasons) and then I cannot enjoy much of what happens further.
So, I'm quoting my opening comments for this series :
I totally appreciate the 'pongals':-)Quote:

(மிஸ்டர் பாரத், 1986 , ஜானகியுடன்)
Another sugar-coated duet by the top pair SPB-SJ, that tastes like one of those Danish butter cookies (that you can't have just one and this song too typically encourages a repeat listen). The initial tak-tak irritation notwithstanding  Ofcourse, that part generates some curiosity as to how it would have been shot on screen (haven't seen / don't know) but I'm not a fan of it when listening to the song. OTOH, the singing of SPB & SJ are in the same levels of 'muththam pOthAdhO' and quite sweet. Same with rAsA's orchestration - somehow it evokes the same feel of the kiss song (there may be some connection that musicals will be able to decipher).
I think it's anybody's guess that this would have been picturized on Rajini-chEchi (it would be a shocker if someone comes and posts that the song was actually for truthking...but, then, anything is possible in TF / TFM). I hope my curiosity level will be sustained till the evening when I can access youtube and get a glimpse of this video (will post the link in this thread if that happens). A very sweet pallavi and equally sweet saraNam and this is the only song I fondly remember from this album. Ofcourse, never had a chance to record or analyze like many favourties (bus / kOlAmbi / teakkadai only number) but just that the others didn't register strongly despite the movie having Rajini.
I think this was around the time that AVM-rAsA urasal started. I'm not positive but it's quite possible as they seem to have started looking at lesser talents for their next movie with Rajini. While I'm not 100% sure whether the very next AVM-Rajini movie had a new MD, they definitely deviated from having only MSV / IR for RK-KH movies as they had between 81-86.
Possibly AVM started their cassette business around this time as well (which possibly clashed with Echo and other rAsA interests). In any case, Chandrabose did become their 'AsthAna' MD for a while and the reason gossipped was their difficulty in working with rAsA. I've read somewhere that rAsA had his own room in AVM recording theater prior and due to the urasals moved out to Prasad. His AVM room was given to Chandrabose etc.
How far these were correct cannot be verified by a layman reader like me :-)
It was a spectacularly popular song would be my take.
Mr.Bharath was released Pongal 1986, much before the other hits like Vikram, AKK, Punnagai Mannan, MounaRagam, etc. (This was the time of the Ind-NZ-Aus tri-series, and 3 months before that Miandad sixer. That month I also remember because one of my dad's friends showed me an India map and asked me to point out Andaman, which sounded Andha Maan to me. I was perplexed because I had no idea why he wanted to see deer in an India map.)
About 10 days after the movie release, I saw Malaysia Vasu in a concert. After he finished the song 'Ennama Kannu', the crowd shouted 'Once More'. (Of course, he also sang Poongatru Thirumbuma, less than a year old, on that day).
It was pretty common for the fellas in my primary school to sing this out at lunchtime, playground, classroom, etc. This was minus the SPB roar when he says 'Paayum puli naan thaan'.
I consider myself always 10 years behind the times, but these days have serious difficulty watching the 80s movies for more than 30 minutes. I find them too oldfashioned, slow, from a different world..And still, I watched Mr.Bharath last year and enjoyed it. (Perhaps it is not the screenplay but the pleasure of bringing to mind's eye those days of 1985-86 when I stood in queue for the evening School bus, Duckpack bag on shoulder, tiffin bag in hand while around me, some 8 year old narrated Sathyaraj-Rajini dialogues to other 8 year olds with Fly-Receiving-Jaw-dropping mouths). Sathyaraj is my preferred villain for his smartness and casualness.
From Balaji Bala's reviews http://www.bbthots.com/reviews/rewind/mbhaarath.html comes this line:
"Both have fun during the Ennammaa Kannu... song, one of the highlights of the movie. It is sung heartily by SPB(for Rajnikanth) and Malaysia Vasudevan(for Satyaraj)."
App, I read you watched Mounaragam only recently. Why this Kolaveri Saar? :smile2:
Ennamma Kannu ~ fast & hip song, and the clip is not so bad either, Rajini looks extremely dashing, with his style and attitude, simply wonderful! Sweet , exhilarating preludes & interludes... ♥♥♥♥♥

(நானும் ஒரு தொழிலாளி, 1986 , ஜானகியுடன்)
Back to another Kamal movie (the movie that I referred to as an "old" movie, as this was supposedly in the making for quite a long time and felt by many as "old" even when it got released). The movie was released in Kerala (Palakkad) with the title 'meeNdum sooryOdhayam' printed in Malayalam but 'nAnum oru thozhilALi' in Thamizh  Sridhar had to change the Thamizh title possibly to not antogonize the ruling ADMK (even though MGR was quite sick by the time this movie was on screen).
Extremely sweet song, typical harmony between SPB & SJ and IR throwing in some sweet instrumental pieces made this song instantly likeable. Another "bus-only" song and mostly listened during night rides. Reminds me of the breezy road between Pollachi and Pazhani where buses often didn't have perfect window insulation and the vAdaikkARRu used to pierce the bones. Same experience with Pollachi bus stand where one got stranded often in midnight / early morning and the vAdaikkARRu could be devastating. Forcing one to drink tea frequently and also visit the rest room often :-)
The poster of this movie - with Kamal Ambika - that is still fresh in my mind (with different Malayalam / Thamizh titles) was at the "Sultan pettai" junction of Palakkad, one of the few places that had a "traffic light" those days. This junction was visited by us practically daily - on one of the four sides was Ashok Bhavan ( a poor Palakkad clone of Annapoorna with similar sAmbar soaked idli etc) and the opposite of that was a stationary store. We had taken dinner there many days (and I did suffer some terrific bowel experiences in the night thereafter, even taken to clinic by others in the morning etc). This was one of the better-looking veggie restaurants of Palakkad those days and was a regular place for TN bachelors...
