First time on video or in every sense? This was a regular on radio those days...
Yes, Uma Ramanan...the director of the movie was camera man Nivas (who did camera for the first 5 movies of BR & directed kallukkuL eeram under BR's mERpArvai)...

First time listening also  I have O Nenjame in one of my playlists...
Nerd - Checkout other songs in Enakkaaga Kaathiru. All are lovely, especially the one sung by IR "Ooty Malai Kaatile". Pani Mazhai Vizhum by Deepan and SPS is also a beauty. Absolutely stunning and unique imagery painted in all the songs in this album.

Glad, you are visiting ENAKKAGA KATHIRU from early 80s, from my school years.
Nostalgic early Ilayaraja! Raja delivers hillside flute orchestration for the female solo.
Uma's female solo you have mentioned is rag (hindustani-megh/carnatic-madhyamavathi)
Wanna alaap of the rag, indulge THULLI THULLI NEE PAADAMMA......Bala for Kamal.

Kavingar Vairamuthu with S.P.B & Janu for Ilayaraja!
yeah... again PANI MAZHAI VIZHUM.....IS BEAUTIFUL COMPOSITION, VAIRAMUTHU'S LYRICS GOOD TOO.
We are very blessed!:)

sampling over old CD pile in the car, came across "Madhu" a Jithan Ramesh starrer.
Probably only myself and hulkster have the CDs of this movie.
Was simply swept away by the following songs.
1. Indha ulagil naan
2. nilavai sutri
3. kaetkavillayaa
The interludes, preludes ellaame awesom tuning..
only complaint i have in "nilavai suttri" is the length of sangadhis was far too short -giving the feeling of "abruptness" or "broken".
http://thiraipaadal.com/album.php?AL...R00325&lang=en
The breathlessness one experiences trying to sing "indha ulagil" charanams and "kaetkavillaya" charanams has to be sung to
be beleived.
Thanks rajkumarc/baroque for the details and recommendations :-)
Whenever I play the 'En Manavaanil' tape in my car, it remains there for days together. I don't know why but I like this whole album. Every song is enjoyable. I don't feel like forwarding any song and neither do I want to stop listening to this tape. This is surprising because it will be difficult to rate this album along with Raja's best, yet it gives me so much pleasure!!! 'enna solli' and 'unnai thedi' are examples of how modern songs should sound like!! If Raja gives something like this for NEVP I will be fully satisfied!!! :D

Saw some scenes of Nizhalgal in TV. The BGMS for (initial scenes) Nizhalgal ravi and his lover is superb and it reminds me A.R.Rahman's sugam sugam song prelude. Anybody in same boat?
An absolute gem from the movie 'Agni Paarvai' which I am hearing for the first time. Kalyani based outstanding melody which was posted in twitter by @rozavasanth

இந்த பாட்டெல்லாம் கேட்டோம் என்பதே மறந்துபோச்! என்ன ஒரு நாஸ்டால்ஜியா! http://bit.ly/zFBejr #ஹையாஜாலிஜாலி thanks for https://twitter.com/#!/kweezzz the Raja quiz guy :)
What a modern blend
guys.. any iTunes users out here? go to iTunes radio and go to international genre there. There is a radio station called A9Radio. whenever i click it, it plays Ilaiyaraaja songs. I dont know if it is a coincidence or if it is a Raaja-music radio. But whatever, try and enjoy the potpurrie playlist there. All good songs!
Yesterday night on twitter we played a #SwingingRaja playlist. This was based on suggestion from multiple people. Here is the list for your enjoyment:

Did he also not act in "Rishi Moolam" as Sivaji/Viajya's son?

These are the songs I grew up listening to. How about Vani Jayaram for a club song this time instead of S Janaki and Gangai Amaran singing for Kamal instead of Malaysia Vasudevan? The movie was a blockbuster and song was very famous that time. There is spooky mood to the song especially in the interludes, as the crime investigation going on during the song.
With all elements; horns, electric guitar, acoustic drums, husky voice and singing, delectable choirs defining this club song, how about a stranger called 'urumi' for this song. Please hear the first interlude end portion and whole of second interlude with urumi coming in as percussion instead of usual drums providing a perfect backdrop for trumpets and electric guitar.
Only Maestro can think of all possible ways from the improbable.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvmtUFNKut4
There is video for this song in youtube, but the song is not in full, abrubly cut off during the second interlude which is where the song's real strength is. I uploaded this audio version in youtube.
HQ mp3 version here
This number has been fascinating me for quite a while now.
Everything about this number is just a delight and should be celebrated for eons to come.
1) The tumbling sound of the vessels which is musically ryhthmical.
2) The guitar strumming the notes Ga Ma with the Tu Ru Ru humming in the side by the one and only S Janaki to be joined by the Bass moving Sa Pa Sa downward across octaves.
3) Gangai Amaran opening up and boy has he ever sounded so romantic. (Gangai Illa Mangai chorus adding the perfect harmony)
4) The first interlude with the triple counterpoint between violins , violins (I think) and flute is just more than enough for a lifetime.
5) The Guitar vamping and the Guitar counterpoint with the keys in the 2nd interlude , didn’t I just say the 1st interlude was more than enough - but he doesn’t listen he always gives more than you want. :)
An additional Indian classical touch for you too in the combination of flute and Mridangam.
6) The mild shift from major scale to chromatic scale when Gangai sings Pudhu Raaga Jaadhikalum.
This man's music gives us so much happiness which can never be expressed in words but can only be experienced.
Ecstacy in Abundance , I bow to you my Lord.
:ty: Rajsmed for uploading the full version of this spectacular beauty.

V_S,
What freakout song. Amazing. Hearing it for the first time.
Sureshji, this is from the famous Kamalahasan movie "oru kaidhiyin diary" (story by Bagyaraj, directed by Bharathiraja), that also had 'ABC nee vAsi' & 'pon mAnE, kObam EnO' songs...featured two Kamals, Radha, Revathy & 3 villains :-) Malaysia Vasudevan acted as the main villain...
Haven't you watched the movie?
Thanks Suresh ji! A freaky in all aspects. I posted that song as I was also hearing that song after many years. Also this song is easily shadowed by other two songs, that's why I used to have the other two songs in my playlists, but not this one. Now after listening to it, could not escape to other two songs, so addictive.
What song is this for us youtube-denied?
Plum,
The song is Idhu ROsaa Poovu from Oru Kaidhiyin Diary. May be its because I didn't make the youtube video public, I have changed it now. Please try now. But it is not a video, just the song with some Maestro's clips.
A playlist of compiling 'Kanna' songs in Ilaiyaraaja's music resulted in so many treasures. Compiling the list. Do add more if you know :)

I am aware of 'ABC' and 'ponmAne' but haven't heard this song. While I do know about the movie and Bhagyaraj's involvement, I haven't watched the movie. Somehow never been a great movie watcher. One of the few guys, who had lived in Hyderabad and not watched 'Sholay'!!! Even today people can't believe it. I have not watched most of the standards, 'Sholay', 'Maine Pyrar Kiya', 'QSQT','DDLJ' etc. So in a way my film watching is much worse than the song listening :)
end of the day ..., I just need a Song break to relax before hitting bed.
I am kind of in a mood for nostalgic with a touch of pathos longing.
துள்ளி திரிந்ததோர் காலம்... ஸ்ரீ.இளையராஜா's melodious ஹார்மோனியம் with தபலா is perfect tonight .
ஸ்ரீ.பாலா's சுகமான prelude ஆலாப் , interlude புல்லாங்குழல் passage , wonderful பாடல் வரிகள் .
heartwarming pensive mood in my மனசு tonight , sitting with my comfort drink ,ginger tea !

I am OK if this is sometime in June :D Now too tight and probably not be in town for a week together. I guess June should be fine given that people are not waiting for me to answer their questions :D
Due to my previous non-acquaintance (and hence the inability to post about), the following song won't get featured in the SPB-IR thread.
I heard the song for the first time today and loved it so much - so, it at least deserves a post here :-)
Don't miss this "kacha-mucha" song where SPB-IR combined to create a rocking dappAnguththu :

Here's the Adhikaalai Nilave Alangara Silaiye song from Uruthi Mozhi that I uploaded long time ago on Youtube. Here's the video in case you haven't come across it yet:

Vettaveli pottalilE is my most favorite song in "Nalla Naal". I heard this song recently only (few years back in a TV). Ketta vudan kapppunu pidichathu. Ofcourse this has elder sister "Maaman Machan" and younger sister "Kattukkule".
The connection equation is like
"Searching + Mystery" Raja ==> "Mystery + Ghost" Raja ==> "Ghost + Funny" Raja
Hail raja :)
