With a charismatic smile and the ability to play the savior of the masses, MG Ramachandran (MGR) captured the imagination of youngsters in the 1950s and 1960s.
“MGR was the proverbial ‘good samaritan’,” explains Tyagarajan, journalist and political analyst better known by his pen name chinna kuthoosi. “He was the aam aadmi hero often essaying roles of a peasant, autorikshaw driver or a fisherman to identify with the common man.” His movies made him a legendary hero in the eyes of his fans. “While buying a ticket for an MGR movie, one was not surprised if an enthusiastic fan crawled across your shoulders to get to the counter.”
After building a larger than life image, the star turned his attention to politics. He joined the DMK party in 1953 and remained its member till 1972. “His involvement in the Dravidian Movement gave scope for his films to propagate political ideas,” emphasizes Kolappan, Political Correspondent for The Hindu.
After his stint with DMK, he set up the rival Anna - DMK party which won the state elections in alliance with Indira Gandhi's Congress party. “MGR took full advantage of his fan base.” reveals Tyagarajan, “During elections, his fan clubs would set up camp in every district and campaign for his party.”
The central part of any MGR movie was the social message it imparted and it made people look up to him as a hero of the oppressed. “His campaigners named themselves after his movies, and thus garnered votes from his star struck fans.” The deciding factor of the party’s win was the absence of caste, creed, religious biases, “Doctors, engineers, lawyers, councilors, workers and auto drivers, all were welcome to join MGR’s party.” He became the Chief Minister and was re-elected for three consecutive terms.
