[FLASHBACK]
A determined non-cinema watcher, that's what I was. Every excursion to a movie planned by my buff of a father would be met with last minute tactical retreat to the bathroom by yours truly, in an attempt to delay, and therefore disintegrate the plans. This resulted in often being dumped next door with a friendly religious, principled non-cinema watcher of a neighbour while the rest of the family continued their normal pursuit of entertainment.
This was to change. I remember the day. The neighbour having retired to his native place, that day I didnt have a choice but to accompany the rest of the family to the movie hall. Not to worry. I still had my doosra. Go to sleep as soon as you settle down with the pop corn in the seat. Only, I couldnt, as a particularly charismatic young man stole a car, and indulged in a thrilling chase, orchestrated expertly by a genius in the background, of whose talent I'd only learn in the following years much later. The stylish youngster traversed hilly roads, changed the nameplates, spray painted the car to a groovy colour, and held up a tape recorder to record folksy songs by plantation workers. I was hooked. Ostensibly, it was the man on screen who hooked me in. A later viewing on TV served the realisation that the man playing the background score was equally responsible for it but thats another story for another time.
As Johnny went about his cons, and Vidyasagar endeared himself with his lazy, understated langour, my fascination grew. and Johnny was the first movie I 'watched' in a theater, though had been in the theatre for many movies before.
Such was the impact of Johnny that I saw Ranga many times in theatre. Enough said. There cannot be a better endorsement for that character of Rajni.

I voted for kALi.
