There was a good article on poltergeists in Readers Digest in one 1989 issue. The term is used mostly in England and it refers to a harmless ghost with no malicious intentions.

naagam and other spooky things
Hi,
again I thank walrus and nirosha for encouraging words.
As far as significance of snakes in mythologies goes, except the christian mythology all ancient religions believe snakes to be symbol of fertility. The naaga pradhishtai(installation of snake idols) in temples which someone was earlier referring to is done by childless couples to clear naaga dhosham. Since i am a city bred guy, my snake encounters are not that scary. What is scary are dreams about snakes. Again most of the inputs on dreams are from my mother. Most general pattern of dream is about a snake that chases you. Well most of us are scared and wake up before the snake bites or we run away from scene or better still another dream sequence interlaces and takes over. My mother says, that if you have a dream where the snake coils around your legs, then you are in for some trouble as it signifies shani (Lord saneeswara) starting to dominate your life. In such a dream, the best result is snake after coiling around or chasing you manages to bite!!! That means that lord shani is going to do something good in your life!!! So keep it in mind the next time you dream about snakes. in hindu mythology, snakes are very prominent and are considered to be feminine force (again ancient pagan symbol of fertility). So you see lot of goddesses as naagaatha, or nagamma. In karnataka, snake is a symbol of Lord Muruga (no wonder as he too is a symbol or God of fertility). In fact the famous site of pilgrimage in Karnataka Kukke Subrahmanya, you would be surprised to see a snake hill (paambu puthu) instead of any idol of Lord muruga. Snakes are also a symbol of ejuvenation and eternal youth, again as a result of their shedding their skin periodically. In Mahabharatha, the last scion of the pandavas Raja parikshith is cursed to die of snake bite and despite all his efforts he gets bitten by a sarpa that is so small as t ofit inside a lemon and dies. More famous death due to snake is that of Cleopatra who again as per shakespeare commits suicide by letting her hand into a pot containing a viper. I do not know what is the significance of a dream in which a person is engulfed by a boa constrictor or a python.??? :!:
Whats a spirit religiously?
Hey guys, wondering what the heck is a ghost atleast according to hindu religion, follow this interesting link for the details http://www.sanskrit.org/Rites%20of%2...ncestors1.html
In Hindu belief system, the only ritual a person cannot escape is the rituals done to free a spirit from its body to the abode where it should reside in (Pitru loka). It is also said that a person who performs all the last rites of a dear one departed will benefit from the blessings of the departed soul. My mother has told me of interesting real life incidents involving guardian angels who forewarn approaching calamities or announce a good omen. Will share with you all later after Nirosha has finished her on going story.
