This whole top ten actor top ten director thing is getting boring. So I thought why not combine? Here's my top ten actor/director (can be the other way around too). I list only Tamil because I am not so familiar with films of other language in India. Believe me, this is tough:
1. Kamal Haasan
He excels at both acting and directing. We all know about him.
2. Bandhulu
For the film Muthal Thethi, he donned NT's role in Telugu version. I loved his performance in Muradan Muthu as NT's brother.
3. K. Bagyaraj
Our very own Woody Allen. He created this Bagyaraj persona. His earlier work as director and actor are part of cinema history.
4. Manivannan
Wonderful director who popularised thriller genre . A good comedian if given a good script, and certainly a good character actor.
5. Nassar
I believe he directed about four films. His first, Avatharam, is the best, both as a director and as actor. We all know how good he is as an actor.
6. Visu
Visu can be terrific or annoying. His films can be thoughtful or plain irritating. Some of the good stuff he did, as an actor and director, are part of the best of the eighties.
7. K.S. Ravikumar
A hack director and a good character actor. Always underused as a comedian, something which he is damned good at.
8. A.P. Nagarajan
We all know him as a director, but he contributes strongly in many character roles. Guess who played Nakkeeran in the classic Thiruvilayadal.
9. R. Parthiban
Parthiban shares same criticism with Visu. Like him or loathe him. When he's good, he's damned good, when he is not, avoid him.
10.Arjun.
Arjun is the most prolific actor working today, and is very consistent with the quality of his work. The film he directed are the type of film that he can work in. A limited actor/director who knows his limitation.
I know I may have missed a few name, but these names came to my mind immediately.
That was a good analysis Groucho
But how come you missed out T. Rajendar :P
directors
1.Mahendran
2.Maniratnam
3.Barathiraja
4.Kamalhaasan
5.Bala
6.Singeetham srinivasa rao
7.Selvaraghavan
8.Ameer
9.k.vishwanath
10.balachander(only social dramas like thanneer thanneer, varumai niram sigappu, unnaal mudiyum thambi, vaname ellai)
1. K Balachander
2. Kamal Hassen
3. Barathiraja
4. Balu Mahendra
5 Cheran
6 Fazil
7. Mahendran
8. Maniratnam
9. K Bagyaraj
10. R Parthiban
That's an oversight on my part. Terribly sorry.Quote:

And his performance has nothing new in it. I'd say that at least T.R had some originality in him...a personality that probably was useful in a movie or two, but sucked later.
Of course there's Pandiyarajan. No new contribution from him. Or Sathyaraj who did one film; it resembled his friend Manivannan's effort. I recall even Karthik directed one film. Did he?
Or Major Sunderajan for that matter. Some of his films he did with NT is good. But he is an average character actor who sometimes seemed to be copying NT. But whatever reputation he had as a good director, "Andha Oru Nimidham" destroyed it.
Then you have a list of directors who became comedians, like Anumohan, Manobala, R. Sunderajan who have done decent movies and gave decent performances. No major impact.
There are also directors who comes out in front of the camera and you just want to chase them back to behind the camera. Those names I mentioned popped up in my mind immediately when I intended the list.

I can't name names...because they are mostly alike, like Kanmani Aval Ponmani, or Thirumathi oru vegumathi, or Paruppu en Porruppu or something like that.
It begins to be formulaic, with Visu holding the court at the end, repeating some kind of punch dialogue. Add that the same repeated middle-class depression. Most of these times; I'd probably have yawned and hit my head on something hard that I had Visu-related amnesia.
But I list him there, because of his early films. They were damned good. His Gauvry Kalyanam was a great family drama that also functioned like a thriller - get the money before the wedding and how do you do it? Or Manal Kayiru, which was funny as hell.
So, I hope you don't mind me not listing his irritating movies. Visu is best explained in his role in Rajini's Mannan "Ippa theriyuthu yeen onnai adichaangga-nnu!"

It took a couple of days for me to get over the effect - the climaxes of those two movies created. Similarly with Autograph, paaNdavar boomi and TT. His thEsiya geetham did not impress me much and I am yet to see Mayakkannadi. I am confident that he would have excelled in some aspect with the movie and thus it would be worth viewing.
Oh.. Directors list, is it. Let me try :P

3. Balachandar
4. Mani Ratnam
5. Balu Mahandra
6. Bala

Some of my fave movies....some are lesser known than others, but are all great films:
Pooveli - Karthik and Kousalya were superb in this movie and the story is excellent.
Aasaiyil Orr Kaditham - Prashanth's best film (apart from Jeans :D). Again, v.good storyline.
12B - Simran was just superb in this film, really felt sad for her at the end!
ABCD - Brilliant acting by Sneha, different kinda story.
Kandukondain Kandukondain - Different story for Tamil films....and who can forget Aishu!!! One of her few roles in Tamil. Excellent music byt the legend that is A. R. Rahman! I think this is the highest sellling audio cassette/ CD in Tamil Nadu.
Kaathalan, Jeans, Muthalvan (Hopefully Sivaji also to add to this list!) - Fave Shankar films, again Rahman's awesomeness shining through.
Minsara Kanavu - great story, great acting, great songs, great comedy, what more do you need?!
Padayappa - Neelambury Aunty (Ramyakrishnan) done it for me in this film
Vietnam Colony - One of the FUNNIEST movies i've seen. Priceless Goundamani jokes! Great Goundamani + Prabhu combo!
Ghajini - Asin's acting was just superb!
Anbe Sivam - Very emotional movie, Kamal Hassan's acting at its best.
Thenali - FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY!
Poovae Unakaga & Kushi - My favourite Vijay films...before he started doing all the mindless repetitive roles :(
Magalir Mattum - Very funny film! Funny even without any comedy actors!
Bombay - My fave Mani Ratnam film.
Kaathal Kottai & Vaali - Fave Ajith films.
Thats all I can think of at the moment, i'm sure there's lots more! :2thumbsup:
