Song: naalu vagai poovil
Film: Raamayee vayasukku vandhuttaa
Singers: SJanaki, Jayachandran
Lyrics: MGVallaban
Music: Gangai Amaran
Movies are remembered for their storylines, performances , sometimes for their songs, charecterisations etc. Rarely they are remembered for their titles..RVV belongs to such genre.
The filmmaker grabbed everyones attention by this outrageous title. Usually movies belong to 'coming of age' genre but naming the genre itself as the title can happen only in tamil cinema. '16 vayadhinile' ,'kaNNi paruvathile', 'vayasu poNNu', 'vayasu pasanga' :).
Despite having a provocative title , a beautiful Menaka(introduction) and couple of good songs by GA, this movie couldnt stay in the cinema halls for a week. I have no idea of other actors in this film but i remember one other song, A cute solo by SJ 'adi raamayee hey raakayee'.
'naalu vagai poovil' is an nice duet by GA. The unpopularity of the movie did not help keep the song for a long time on the radios(like many other good songs by GA).
I wish we had the radio mirchi and other FM's those days. These obscure songs might have got more air time
Ramki: I think his name is Mano, Prabhu's cousin!
Thanks for the nice song Ramki!
I believe there was another popular song by VJ. Was it 'Naalu Madhangal Ulagin Vasantha..' or something like that..
Bala
Hi Balaji!
"nalu madhangal ulaginil vasantha kaalangaL" by VJ is from the film "karai kadantha oruthi (kuRathi ?)"..
another popular song from the film is "Odathile thanneeru" by SJ !

Song: iraivan endroru
Film: aen
Singer: SPB
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
Music: TRPappa
This is one of SPB's initial songs. His voice sounds so young and different from what we are used to.
According to JN , 'aen' had Ravichandran and Lakshmi in the lead. This film was released in 1970. I have no other details about this film.
In the same year, SPB gave an interview to sivakumar for 'Bommai' magazine. Thanks to RC for sending me the interview(RC received this through SPB yahoo group from Thenraja). You can read the first part of the interview by clicking on the the link below.
I plan to make this a SPB week. I will post the remaining portions of the interview in the coming days.

ramki, "why" had AVM.Rajan and Lakshmi as brother and sister and Nirmala as heroine. Ravi did not figure in the movie. This is what I know.
Kannan enakkoru pillai, nAn kanni thAn innum thAi Aga villai for Lakshmi by Sulamangalam sister is another good song in this film. SS laughs in between :-)
man!! is that SPB!! hard to recognize him at the beginning!
Another melodious song set to a jubiliant mood from RVV(Ramayi) is "chinna ponnu manam ponni nadhi veLLam pole" , sung by SJanaki. I could watch only one half of RVV in our good old podhigai , last year. For today's Tamil Film standards, I must admit it was a pretty neatly made film with plausible story line, innocent village characters aka BR films. I wanted to watch the whole film
SN23 and Ramki: I have video of this song. I thought this song is by ravi chandhiran. May be I am wrong. Sorry ramki. I will check it if I find the vcd or cassette.
Thank you all for your inputs

Song: pullankuzhal mozhi
Film: oorum uravum
Singers: SPB , Vanijairam
Lyrics: pulamaipithan
Music: shankar Ganesh
Thanks to Thiru for requesting this nice melody. As I mentioned last week, SG duo frequently surprised music listeners by creating gems like today's pick. SPB and VJ add more saccharine to already sweet song but still we are left asking for more.
'oorum uravum' had sivaji, KRV, nizhalgaL ravi and sumalatha(??). I remember reading couple of reviews on this film and they all said good stuff. I think the film is about a whole village educating a student(NR?) who later forgets his roots and rots in selfishness.
'piLLaiyai' by TMS, PS is another ok duet from OU.
Second part of SPB's interview:

Pick # 95
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/odam_kr.rm
Song: odam kadalodum
Film: kaNmani Raja
Singers: PSuseela, SPB
Lyrics:kaNNadasan?
Music: MSV
Romantic duet at its best. The soft melodious voices, breezy interludes and interesting lines makes this song a very pleasant one. The first interlude begins with a whistle sound. I think MSV used this whistle sound in many of his 70s songs. Songs like 'janakarin magaLai', 'sollathaan ninaikkiren', 'nenjathile nee netru vandhai'(not a 70s song) etc had nice 'whistling' interludes.
'kaNmani Raja' had sivakumar and Lakshmi in the lead. I remember reading Lakshmi's interview where she mentioned that majority number of her films are with Sivakumar.
KR also had the extremely popular duet 'kaadhal viLaiyaada'
Third part of SPB's interview:

Thanks ramki for the oorum uravum POW.. unfortunately no one to discuss about it..:(..
ramki, there is a duet by SPB & PS "Kaathal jothi anaiyaathathu". Is it from Oorum uravum OR Kadhal Jyothi (an old film, story by CN Annadurai).
Sivakumar and Lakshmi was one of the best pairs of those days, even now too. their best picture was avan, aval, adhu.

Good pick ramki. The way SPB says edhanaale and the way PS sings ulagam medhuvaay puriginRadhu...is simply so sweeeet:))
Thiru,
If its any consolation the pick had more than 200 hits :)

Song: deviye naan saranam
Film: thanga thaamaraigaL
Singers: SPB, Chitra
Lyrics:?
Music: iLaiyaraja.
This is a nice but fairly unknown duet by IR from early 90s. SPB sings with his usual charm while chitra does the humming with ease.
I thought TT had Murali in the lead but according to FM, the film had Arjun and Rupini . When i searched online, i discovered the film did indeed have Arjun and Rupini and is directed by VAzhagappan.
(FM can never be wrong about paadavathi movies:).
maamanai paaru maalaiyai podu(chorus) is another good song from TT.
Final part of SPB's interview

Pick # 97

Song: megam rendu serum
Film: poi mugangaL
Singer: SPB
Lyrics: vairamuthu
Music: Chandrabose
A scintillating melody to conclude our SPB week.
From gayathiri to vaanam vasapadum, films based on Sujathas novels never found success at the B.O.(except for the highly butchered 'Priya').
Majority of his novels were either thrillers or mysteries. He occasionally wrote dramas. 'kaagitha uravugaL' was one of them.
This came as a thodarkadhai in saavi in early to mid 80's. I still remember the pictures Maa.Se drew for this story. The story is about a newly married woman's struggle to find a kidney donor for her husband. His kin, including his parents , refuses to donate.
He finally dies. ItS a sad story very well written by Sujatha.
After the story finished its series, 2 films were started based on it. One had Ambika and Rajkumar and the other was with Sulakshana and Ravichandran(kannada). The first one was never completed . The second one came out with the title 'poi mugangaL'. and it had a happy ending(and with lots of extra masala). Needless to say it was a flop. Kannada Ravichandran made his debut in this film and i think he was introduced as Rakesh.
The film boasted 3 good songs by CB.
'ingu naam kaanum paasam'(KJY)
'thottukondaal oar inbam'(KJY) and
today's pick.
Todays pick is one of my CB favorites. SPBs soft vocals , the violin interludes and VM's excellent poetry makes this song exceptional(atleast to me :)
Hi Ramki !
I think the name of the story is "kAgidha sangiligaL".
Is it the debut film for Ravichandran ? or "paruva ragam" (1986)came earlier ?
madhu: I think paruva raagam later.
http://www.intamm.com/movies/movielist/moveilist2.htm says poi mugangaL was released in 1986 and paruva raagam was released in 1987.
tamilcinema.com also has the same info in http://www.tamilcinema.com/permanent/movies.asp
Ramki
Wonderful collections this week. Unable to login last few days. Thanks a lot Ramki!
Thanks Madhu for the correction on the 'Naalu Madhangal' song.
ALso there was a movie that was announced with the same name (as the story) called :kaagidha Sangiligal' By Panchu Arunachalam. It was supposed to cast Suman (as the Kidney Patient) and Sumalatha (as the wife) with IR as the MD. Not sure what happened, the movie never saw the lime light. Polydor (MIL ) was supposed to release the album. Does this sounds familiar to any one?
Bala
Thanks RC ! :P
Ramki -
This song suggles you up with the dreaminess of a lullaby. I was one of those mugangals that gave Poi Mugangal three hours of my life. A hapless minority for sure.
Having said that, let me run and hide face 8)
The featured song is a note-by-note lift of Pankaj Udhas's
"Deewaron Se Mil Kar Rona Achcha Lagta Hai
Hum Bhi Paagal Ho Jaayenge Aaisa Lagta Hai"
Thanks for this solo.
Madhu thanks for the correction.
Balaji i have no idea about the 'kaagitha sangiligaL' film
I always felt this song sounded like some Rafi song , Naaz thanks for pointing out the correct source.
Pick #98
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/kanvi_vs.rm
Song: kaNvizhi enbadhu
Film: vaLaiyal satham
Singers: SJanaki, KJYesudoss
Lyrics: Muthulingam
Music: MSV
'vaLaiyal satham' is one of the several obscure movies of MuraLi that are still remembered only for their songs. Usually MuraLis film have IR's music. Vs is one of (or only one?) Muralis film with MSV's music. I think VS had MuraLi and saradha preetha.
Todays pick has a complex pallavi . Muthulingam displays his excellent talent with poetic lines and KJY,SJ sings with their know ease.
I remember one more solo by KSC 'aezhai kudisaiayil koozhai kudikkira'(FM's favoirte song) :)
Ramki :)
yEzhai kudisaiyil koozhai is super song :)
Lyrics is credited to 'vaalee'.
one more song that I know: 'nandha vana kuyilukku indha manam' by KJY & KSC.
I remember Silk & Kavundamani Comedy scene :)
speaking of obscure movies by MSV, there are plenty of them in that time frame. some of the movies that I immediately could think about them are "Raasaathi kalyaaNam" and "thanga kalasam". Raasathi kalyaaNam had a beautiful solo by KSC [raasaathi ennai thEdi varuvaarE] and the more popular one was "ippadiyum nadakkum endru"[it was popular in Mars].
Pick #99
http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/mouna_ejp.rm
Song: mounam aen mouname
Film: en jeevan paaduthu
Singers: Chitra, Mano
Lyrics: Panju Arunachalam?
Music: iLaiyaraja
Many times i wonder why ,and , how an amazingly soulful song can go unrecognised. Today's pick is a pure gem. The song has everything going for it..brilliant interludes, nice vocals(one of Mano's best), good lyrics. But still the song is long forgotten. Even when the film was released the song was not given much (or any) air time.
EJP, like all IR-Sunderarajan combos, had excellent songs.
'ore murai un dharisanam'-My all time SJ fav
'kaadhal vaanile' -SJ
'katti vachukko indha'-SJ,MV
'engirundho azhaikkum-LM, IR, Mano
'engirundho azhaikkum' was the only song from EJP that was listened to and asked for more.
EJP, i think, is 'the sixth sense' of Tamil films. The lead in both films can see (or talk to) dead people. I might be wrong, but i remember from the reviews that Charanya can see and talk to Karthik's ghost(or soul, whatever). The film did not go well but the songs are unforgettable.
Ramki: Pure Gem, it is! I only wish SPB had sung this song. Our folks here are taking a dig at this movie at http://forumhub.mayyam.com/hub/viewt...=jeevan#100421
Yes..Saranya can see and talk to Karthik's ghost! Kapildev sings this song when he & Saranya get engaged in the movie. This is one of the movies I sat through just for the songs, during my college days. The other one I remember going through the pain is Solla thudikkuthu manasu!
Ramki, you missed "aaN piLLai endraal oru meesai undu" by Mano & SJ.
kaadhal vaanil Odum mEgamE was missing in the movie [ I think so] or otherway around. It was missing in the cassette.
I haven't ever heard 'Kaathal Vaanil Odum'. I guess that song was missing from the cassette?
'engirundho azhaikkum' was for another heroine Sudha, who married director Bharath (Chinna MuL Periya MuL)??
