Maalathi (1970): GG with Sarojadevi and Ravichandran
GG could not marry Sarojadevi by fate of love failure...oftbeat story line in Tamil cinema!Ravi becomes the suspicious husband and tortures Sarojadevi as and when they meet in their married life!! How the heroine gets out of this suspicion mud and the hero GG would have a sigh of relief.. is the rest of the story. A movie with a lukewarm response though GG, Sarojadevi and Ravi did justice to their roles.

“Gemini Ganesan had a reformer's mind”
Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi with Kamala Selvaraj, poet Vairamuthu, Film Director K. Balachander and Poet Vaali at the 90th birthday celebration of actor Gemini Ganesan in Chennai on Sunday.
While celebrating the artistic achievements of actor ‘Gemini' Ganesan, we should also keep in mind that he had a reformer's mind and rose above narrow considerations of caste and religion, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Sunday.
Addressing a function on the occasion of 90 {+t} {+h} birth anniversary of ‘Gemini' Ganesan, the Chief Minister narrated an incident from the actor's biography to stress the point that he was a broad-minded person and had faith in the concept of “ondray kulam oruvanay thevan.”
‘Gemini' Ganesan was angry because his Sanskrit teacher could not digest one of his classmates' perfect pronunciation.
According to the Chief Minister, the actor had developed such a reformist mind because he was groomed by his aunt Muthulakshmi Reddy, who fought for abolition of the devadasi system.
Mr Karunanidhi said ‘Gemini' Ganesan also loved Tamil language and participated in the World Tamil Conference in Kuala Lumpur.
Director K. Balachander said ‘Gemini' Ganesan was “director's delight.”
“The advantage of having him as a hero was that he was convinced about the capabilities of a director, he would leave it the director and would not interfere,” he added.
Lyricist Vairamuthu said ‘Gemini' Ganesan was not envious of anyone and promoted many actors by recommending them to producers and directors.
Lyricist Vaali, who had close relationship with ‘Gemini' Ganesan, said it was the actor who introduced Kamal Haasan to Mr. Balachander and convinced ‘Sivaji' Ganesan about having Aroor Das as dialogue writer for the film ‘Paasa Malar.'
Earlier, the Chief Minister released a CD containing biographical film of ‘Gemini' Ganesan and a book. ‘Gemini' Ganesan's daughter Kamala Selvaraj welcomed and proposed a vote of thanks.

This esteemed thread on GG started by NOV in 2009 has astonishing contributions from seasoned hubbers to start with, as one can perceive going through the first 10 pages, with interactions, debates, remarks ....That starting spark provided a kick start but it is really sad that contributions almost stopped for reasons that are murky. Being a significant contributor to the growth of Tamil cinema GG cannot be ignored. Though an ardent fan of NT I had some inclination to GG thanks to his excellent support to NT as a co-star in many of NT movies, without any ego even though GG is also second to none from the view point of his pivotal role in the history of Tamil Cinema. I am optimistic that admirers of GG would reprise their contributions as life watering. A request if honoured I will be grateful among the admirers of GG's acting style.
K. Balachandar's asset GG?! :
The GG wind was properly intercepted by KB wind mill to produce domestic current of acting at high efficiency level!
As a polished literate with a good perception on national and global cinema proceedings, GG always opted to present his characterizations in a subtle way without much histrionics. He did not have his roots from drama base, where rigorous training helped shape up an actor's skills on dialogue deliveries or facial expressions gradually removing the stage fear. NT is the solid example for this drama based processed output that brought in him lot of confidence and courage before he faced the camera for Parasakthi.;NT could shine in all facets of acting due to his drama roots. But GG without any such exposure and turmoils from childhood, made his astonishing entry and endurance in the cine field, just by switching over to light hearted romantic characters and the man next door type of family man,in a natural mode of observing his surroundings and deriving from international cinema footprints. Unlike NT Gemini had his own limits and limitations like his hesitations for dance steps and multiple role depictions, till Naan Avanillai. He could give a performance of his life time through this film at his receding stage as a sudden spurt proving his mettle comparable to any global actor par excellence! GG kept off himself from all fanfare...yet had a warm reception with the fans in story based family and romantic features that are comfortable to his portrayal.
A highly balanced personality, he never minded to work with other artistes, even if sometimes they steal the show from him (watch GG's reactions in Iru Kodugal when Nagesh dominates in the musical chair song sequence and in Poovaa Thalaiyaa with Jai-Nagesh song seqence!). His seemingly second fiddle portrayals in films with NT,like a sweetener, added only to the standards of these movies true to the story line and the expected effects of emotions in the minds of viewers rather than a scene stealing competition! Even as KB stems from a drama stage base, GG defied that influence and stood on his own living up to KB's expectations, naturally becoming an asset to KB!

Vallavanukku Vallavan (1965) : A GG starrer with a difference!
GG is the arch villain with Manohar and Asokan as do gooder heroes!!
Courtesy : IMDB
Asokan is an engineer who is need for money to start his project. He meets Manimala father who is much satisfied with his project and hence offers him money. One day, his suitcase coincidentally swaps with Manorama whose gang has robbed a bank. Asokan is caught and eventually sentenced. The gang sends Manohar, a local rowdy to kill Asokan so that he doesn't identify Manorama. But Manohar takes him captive and demands for more money from the gang. Asokan manages to escape from Manohar and fake his death by committing suicide from a waterfall presuming his death would bring out the robbery gang. All these incidents is been secretly followed by Gemini Ganesan who introduces himself to be a policeman to Asokan and is aware that he is innocent. In the end it is revealed that Gemini Ganesan is actually the head of the robbery gang and Manohar is a vigilant police officer. He has disguised himself to be a rowdy so as to catch the criminals behind the robbery. (Written by Srinath S)

Vallavanukku Vallavan is a 1965 Tamil action thriller starring S. A. Ashokan, Manimala, Gemini Ganesan, R. S. Manohar in lead roles with Thangavelu and Manorama in supporting roles. Also Savitri, makes a cameo as herself. It was directed by R.Sundaram
Ramesh (S. A. Ashokan) is an engineer who is hunting for a job and with the help of his friend Babu (Thangavelu) goes to see a wealthy businessman named Laxman for a new project of his. After a song and a comic encounter with Laxman's daughter Geeta (Manimala), he falls in love with her. He also achieves very good success in convincing Geeta's father into starting the project. During a sight visit for the project, his suitcase gets swapped with a similar suitcase of a co-passenger named Mala (Manorama), which is full of money. For this reason Ramesh is detained in a police lock-up. Also Mala is revealed to be part of a criminal gang. When the gang leader, Jumboo, is not able to kill Mala (because he needs a particular diary from her), he instead arranges a dangerous rowdy named Bijua Pakiri (Manohar)to kill Ramesh within the lock-up.
However, instead of killing Ramesh, Bijua decides to hold Ramesh captive. Together they escape the lock-up that very night to prove Ramesh's innocence. Bijua also angers the criminal gang of Mala, when he asks for a greater sum in return for killing Ramesh. When a mysterious man (Gemini Ganesan) makes phone calls and tries to save Ramesh from captivity, Ramesh escapes by himself out into the city. The mysterious man also attacks Bijua before running away. The criminal gang try to kill Bijua but he escapes after a fight. Geeta meets him and helps him by giving him a hanky and some milk from her flask.
Ramesh being chased by police, Bijua Pakiri and the criminal gang attempts to fake his death. Geeta believing his death to be real comes to the waterfall where he committed suicide and learns that he is not really dead. They both go one of the villas owned by Geeta's father, and make a secret stay there. Bijua confronts them and threatens to kill Ramesh but is tamed by the very pleading words of Geeta. He instead promises to help Ramesh out of the situation. Both Bijua and Ramesh don disguises to roam about in public, to search for Mala and with her prove his innocence. But, they are chased by police and are led to a comic encounter where they sing a song for a dance by Savitri. Later, Mala and Babu drive a car together and develop romantic feelings for one another. When Ramesh and Bijua get to know this, they try to use their relationship to get the truth out of Mala. But their plan backfires.
After this, the mysterious man (Gemini Ganesan) appears secretly inside Ramesh's car promising to help him. He accepts that he is a police officer when asked, and says he knows that Ramesh is innocent. But leaves when Bijua and Babu enter the car. Men from the criminal gang disguise as policemen and "arrest" Ramesh whom they intend to murder at a safe spot. However, with the help of his friends Ramesh escapes. Later, the same mysterious man appears once again, and meets Ramesh once again to tell him that he knows Mala well and also Bijua is planning to give off Ramesh to the criminal gang, for money. Ramesh, believes him and starts to avoid Bijua, telling him that he now knows his true colours.
When Mala is forced by Jumboo, the gangleader, to fly abroad, she is confronted by the still mysterious man who forces her to give him the diary, failing which she would end up in jail. But she is shot by a shadowy figure, who is then chased by the mysterious man. But, Bijua gets hold of the diary after coming there. Ramesh learns of the death of Mala and becomes sad. Jumboo arrives there and Bijua confronts him, now asking for twice the earlier amount for the diary and the life of Ramesh.
Bijua takes Ramesh with him to prove his innocence, after pleading with Ramesh and Geeta for a long time. They arrive at a cave on a hill. There Bijua tries to sell Ramesh and the Diary for the agreed sum, apparently betraying Ramesh. The mysterious man arrives at the scene to whom Ramesh explains the situation.
When the mysterious man tries to act his police disguise there, Bijua reveals he is Mr.Prakash, the true leader of the crime gang and he himself is Inspector Sekar of Vigilance Branch. With this information both Prakash and Ramesh are startled. After some talk an elaborate fight and chase scene, Mr.Prakash drives a boat that crashes into a rock fatally killing him. Ramesh is proven innocent through the information in the diary.
Bijua (now Inspector Sekar) attends the marriage of Ramesh and Geeta in full inspector uniform. The film ends with Babu receiving a prize sum from Police Department for his help in the case.
This film elevated the then coming up Asokan as a hero supported by Manohar as a good police official in search of our arch villain GG for a change! GG and Savithri lent a guest appearance only. The songs were really rhythmic and mellifluous to hear! The song ' Oraayiram Paarvaiyile...' in line with a Hindi movie song was a hot favourite in radio at that time! The movie had some interesting twists and knots...for GG just an entry count!
'Sivaji and I were considered lucky'
Gemini Ganesan
Gemini Ganesan and Sivaji Ganesan were contemporaries.
I think it was 1950. I was working as the casting director at Gemini Studios.
Sivaji came to the studio one day with a recommendation letter from the late director A S A Swamy. That was when I met him for the first time. I had remarked in my book that Sivaji had a very expressive face and that he could become a good actor. He did.
In 1952, I quit Gemini Studios and joined the Narayana Company. That was when I got to see Parasakthi, Sivaji’s first film. I thought he acted very well in the film.
Our first film together was Pennin Perumai by P Pullaih. It ran so well that many filmmakers wanted to cast Savitri (the heroine), Sivaji and myself together in films. They felt our combination would work wonders at the box office.
It was director Bhim Singh who made the maximum number of films with the three of us, like Pathi Bhakti, Paasa Malar, Parthal Pasi Theerum, etc. I think Sivaji and I must have acted together in at least nine dozen films. Quite remarkable, I feel.
After a gap of about 15 years, in 1975, we worked together again in Unakkaha Mann. It was produced by our good friend Balaji. After that we never acted together in a film again.
I feel he has lived a full life. Still, it is unfortunate that Tamil film world lost a legendary actor.
As told to Shobha Warrier

It is very rare to see GG in the company of a dancing artist! It is not uncommon in other actors' movies that at least in one scene the glamorous dancer tries to woo the hero! GG maximum avoided this or it didn't happen. Rarely, in one of the significant movies of GG 'Shanthi Nilayam' he was seen with Vijayalalitha. This movie's pride is the cinematography of Markus Bartley the ace cinematographer of Indian cinema....(Chemmeen, Konjum Salangai,..)

ஜெமினிகணேசனின் நினைவலைகள்

Vepathur Kittu, a noted Tamil journalist and screenplay writer, worked in Gemini Studios as creative assistant to the studio’s boss and Indian movie mogul S.S. Vasan and to T.G. Raghavachari (who signed his film as Acharya). Kittu was always looking for new story ideas and was responsible for the basic content of Gemini Studios’ magnum opuses Chandralekha, Motor Sundaram Pillai and Vaazhkai Padagu.
He was a voracious reader and a movie buff who never missed a good English movie running in city theatres. He told this writer that he read a French novel (translated), which was the inspiration for Vaazhkai Padagu. The film was first made by Gemini Studios in Hindi as Zindagi (1962) under the direction of Ramanand Sagar, with Vyjayanthimala and Rajendra Kumar in the lead. The Tamil version Vaazhkai Padagu expectedly was written by Kittu, and directed by C. Srinivasan, popularly known as ‘Hollywood’ Srinivasan because he had trained at the Mecca Of The Movies. He worked for Gemini Studios for a few years and moved to Nigeria where he designed and established the Nigerian National Television Network with much success.
Vaazhkai Padagu begins with a young, attractive and unemployed woman Seetha (Devika) taking up stage acting as career. A wealthy man Kannabhiran (Balajee) is after her, and uses his henchman (Manohar) to kidnap her. During the attempt, Rajan (Gemini Ganesan) and his clever dog ‘Honey’ rescue her and the two fall in love. Rajan is the son of a zamindar (Ranga Rao), who has a poor opinion of Seetha. However, after many hurdles, the two marry. The director of Seetha’s stage troupe, Gopal (Muthuraman) too is in love with her, but she never responds. When Kannabhiran is murdered, Gopal is arrested. He has an alibi — on the night of the murder, a young woman stayed with him in his house, but then he does not disclose her identity. The woman turns out to be Seetha, and she gives them the evidence. One of the members of the jury is her father-in-law, and complications follow, with the husband leaving her and wishing to marry again. However, the truth comes out and the family is united in the end.
Vaazhkai Padagu fared well at the box-office. The film was Devika’s first for Gemini Studios. Her performance in this film was brilliant and she virtually carried the film on her shoulders. An import from Tamil theatre, she became a star playing the lead role in many Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies thereafter. Gemini Ganesan as the hero and Ranga Rao too give impressive performances, as does the smart dog. Aada Brathuku
The film also had pleasing music (M.S. Viswanathan and T.K. Ramamurthy, and lyrics by Kannadasan), which contributed to the success of the film.
Remembered For: The interesting storyline, good performances by Devika, Muthuraman, Gemini Ganesan and Ranga Rao. And also for the pleasing music, impressive photography and the presentation on-screen
Vaazhkai Padagu (1965) the GG starrer was an instant hit and the songs became popular, particularly the song sequence 'Netru varai nee yaaro ....' and 'Chinna chinna kannanukku..' are telecast periodically even today. In a good physical form and charisma GG enacted his role of the suspicious husband to Devika with elan.

Though one cannot defy his age, cinema acts as a camouflage to conceal age with an intelligent way of facial make-up, dress coverage and lighting with camera angles. Though GG shows a sort of tiredness he participates in a song sequence enthusiastically, of course not for showing up his 'dance' talents or steps! In this big mustache, unusual for him, and the tuxedo get-up GG looks like a retired Major General!!
