An ECB spokesman said: “It is an attempt to try and support England-qualified players. There is a lot of investment in player pathways from the bottom upwards. This is a move designed to support our system.”

The ECB has retained discretion to reduce the residency period to four years for players born in a non-Test playing nation, which would apply to Irishmen such as Somerset spinner George Dockrell and Middlesex batsman Paul Stirling.
