MADURAI: A life-size bronze statue of actor Sivaji Ganesan will be unveiled in Madurai on October 4 by M. K. Alagiri, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, in the presence of actor Kamal Haasan and a galaxy of film stars.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, G. Ramkumar, the actor’s elder son, said that diehard fans of the actor here always wished to install his statue and it had become a reality. The Union Minister, who had recently declared at a function that he was not a Sivaji fan but a “fanatic,” would be part of the event. The statue would be installed just behind the statue of Congress leader P. Kakkan on Dr. Ambedkar Road. The bhoomi puja for the installation was done on Wednesday.
Mr. Ramkumar said that it was because of the efforts of former Chairman, Board of Trustees of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, V. N. Chidambaram, a close friend and associate of the thespian, that the idea materialised. According to Mr. Chidambaram, the eight-and-a-half-foot bronze statue to be installed in Madurai would be different from the bronze statues installed in Puducherry, Chennai and Thanjavur.
