Worst period 1978-1981???
Hamid - adhu due to personal issues. Latha, Ramavaram thottam, hospital, overwork, stress, breakdown. You connect the dots. Films-wise, my personal view is two distinct poor periods: after padikkadhavan, steady deterioration until thalabadhy. Post annaamalai, steady deterioration.
Okay..
Padikkathavan to Thalapathi.. hmm.. have to check this filmography. Guru Sishyan ellam athukku munnadiya?
After Annamalai... steady detoriation???? Plum.. :x hmm.. still I cant resist.. How about Enthiran? zimbly waste in your opinion?
keen to know what was going around in the media in that period... wat were the speculations, etc.,
for sure there shd be some newspaper/magazine extracts collected by someone..
nalla velai, there was no media exposure in those days like the one we hav now...
tthaa.. saavadichiruppaanunga.
Hamid - Endhiran is a Sangar cementji movie.sangarji is my kryptonite #2. Also not much enamoured by superstar in the movie. Ofcourse, my claim about steady deterioration doesn't hold given Endhiran performance was perhaps better than padaiyappa ec but oru thoraayamaa sonnen. And in the first period, exceptions like Guru Sishyan exist. Just that that period marks my migration to the other camp. Andha pakam Nayagan, Pushpak, Salangai Oli, Appoorva, MMKR. Indha pakkam Manidhan, Maappillai, Oor Kaavalan etc. Do the math.
Enakku vivaram therinju, mannan appuram thaan, rajni real super star...
Athukku munnadi, summa paerukku thaan super star...
i think 1986 lerndhu, rajni ye super star nu title a poduvaanga...
Bt Mannan appuram thaan ela padamum BB except baba...

Dilbu - you are gentleman great man. I no argue with you. I the surrender to you. Only you in this forum. Whatever you say!
Please don't spam this thread.
The worst period in Rajini's life gave some of the best performances. When he works hard, he really delivers the good.
You gotta be kidding me.
*grouch waits for Dilbert to kid him. The latter doesn't.*
Okay, here are some of my fav during that period:
Aayiram Jenmangal
Bairavi
Ilamai Oonjaladukirathu
Sadhurangam
Mullum Malarum
Thappu Thalangal
Aval Appadithan
Justice Gopinath
Ninaithale Inikkum
Dharma Yuddam
Naan Vazhavaippen
Annai Oru Alayam
Anbukku Naan Adimai
Kaali
Johnny
Polladhavan
Murattu Kalai
Kazhugu
Thillu Mullu
Netrikan
Ranuva Veeran
Favourite performances. The movies might suck, but he was what kids these days would call, a "natural". Eww...did I say that?
As Plum mentioned, personally it was not a great time for him. He was not well, working too hard, I think he had a blackout at one point. Plus some other personal problem that I heard about, but not sure if they are true. So, 78 - 81 bad time personally, awesome time career-wise.
Thanks for the clarifications Grouch..
Maybe Plum got the period wrongly and attached that to the personal issues too.. when did the movies listed by him(Manidhan ( [just love rajini in this movie...He was dashing and performace was good though the villanic scenes are stupid.. ], Maappillai, Oor Kaavalan ) got released? what are the movies which got released durign that period?
What did I attach personal with those movies I mentioned? Personal issues 78-81. Those movies I talked about were later when personally he was in good shape after marriage.. When did I mix up the two? You probably mixed it up in your mind.
Oh you don't know when maappillai et al were all released? Sorry I I didn't realise that. I thought it was pretty obvious from my comment that they were during nayagan, pushpak, mmkr etc - meaning 1985-90
Hamid, Plum and I differ in our preferences those days, sort of opposite camp.
Me: 1983 to somewhere mid90s, hc Kamal fan, accepting Rajini late 80s. While Plum was hc Rajini fans, and towards late 80s totally jumped the ship. Must have been an easy jump because I had one leg on Rajini's boat that time
Of course, we have since settled down and became NT fan instead. Its like rockers who when they get old, go back to basic and start to play blues.
Okay Grouch.. 1983la irunthe Kamla fan-a? unga vayasu enna? I believe we shd be off the same age group..
Movies dont get released in my town those days.. Mostly watch NT movies in VCR those days and was a NT fan initially.. apart from NT movies we had only Kamal movies and just hated him when my father used to make fun of Rajini in each and every way possible.. then I had become a Rajini fan.. (though still my parents used to say i started punching them while watching Kakki Sattai and they bought that casette for that.. )
then garadully started respecting Kamal and always had high regards for him..but he comes only after Rajini for me...
Toongathe Thambi Toongathe (all the wrong reason to become his fan), I was ten years old. Athukku munnadi, just like-like, as my dad has brainwashed me into becoming MGR fan first. Palikku pali, pulikku puli. I am going to brainwash my son into becoming NT fan. But too young fer now.
Back then considering all of us were Kamal fans, there were liberal dosage of Rajini trashing at home, except for my mother. But how times changed. Brothers are also Rajini fans now. Mom, hardcore. Father too has become Rajini fan (Baasha, overnight), and totally did an underbalti and now commenting on Kamal's dance :argh:. he is still MGR fan, athu onniyum panna mudiyAthu.
:) TTT.. we ahd that casette too.. "varuthu varthu" song ellam rasichu paarthu irukken..
brainwashing.. paaarthu avan appuram MGR fan aakida poraan :) [ just thinking what will be Plum's state if his daughter becomes a vijay Fan ]..
My father isnt watching movies these days and was not a fan of anyone any more.. But he started to acknowledge Rajini is also good aftter Thalapathi.. still remember the disbelief at home when he said he watched Thalapathi in a theater in Chennai.. of course he went as he had time for his train.. but still it was like a victory for me when he said, his acting was not that bad...
