"for those who are interested"... ha ha ha.. yes indeed. as the thread seems to have been hijacked, that line is needed indeed.
NOV sir, pl permit Dr and anban. we need them at this hour to discuss and analyse UV.
In a way how we know Doctor-sir here, his comments must have been in the tone of
"Thiruppi adicha dhan adi-lendhu thappika mudiyum, Katthi edutha dhan uyiroda irukka mudiyum #Nayakan"
As rightly pointed out by USV sir, We never provoke anyone here. Engaluku vera vela irukku.
We are here to discuss the nuances and brilliance of the MAN, and appreciating HIS art here. In a way, this is stopping us to do what we like doing here. :(
Kumarsr,
A movie is actually 'whatever the viewer wants it to be'. Few people try to be 'perfectionist' stating that what they state is what should be slated. Irrespective to what the makers may have thought (I had been slapped many number of times with that line), I approach a movie as it appraoches me, and I don't care about the insider's informations. Such arguments come into place only when the fans & audience realise "Genre Filmmaking", until then, there is no wrong in expressing whatever you think about the movie. We have a habit of mixing anything & everything, and that's entirely a different topic.
'Your film got 1 million viewers'
- 'I am glad that it will have 1 million different views'
Thats the end statement of any film maker. Recently I had a long (unofficial) conversation with a film maker and we were interrupted by other fans in regular intervals. "The scene was quite simple - a guy falls from the top of a building. Just a second before he is approached by the hero". I was not not amazed on the impact the scene had on the viewers, but was with their feedback. Some said that it was sad he commited suicide, other claimed its a tragic accident, few stated that it was the hero who scared him that made him fall, others went a step ahead and did a psychoanalysis inferring what made him jump, others blamed their relationship and pitied the guy, a lot laughed at the fall stating that it was one of the lighter moments in the film, others concluded that it was intentional, when few others judged that it was decisional.
The interesting part is that, for all the feedback the film maker was just smiling and nodding his head, as though every viewers interpretation was absolutely correct. Thats the magic of cinema. I know what and why exactly he kept that scene that way, but I will not speak it out and take the charm of film making. Its not getting acquainted with a film personality that counts, but respecting him as well as any other viewers sentiments is what that is important. That's the fuel to the machine called cinema.
One thing I always follow is that - creating a theory around a result will obviously point to the result - should not do that. In the context of UV, if you already consider Manorangan & Muttharasan are same and then start discovering symbols in the film, it will point to it. Else if you approach them to be 2 different persons, the same symbols will indicate something else. Thats the magic, but finding the trick needs an appraoch, eventhough both are logically correct with its own share of falacies. For that matter any decent film will hold it, not only Uttama Villan.
For instant : I can take the bubble theory, put it inside and comeout stating that it about 'multi-talent'. Or state that the galaxy is a hot pot where one bubble brusts to make few others and then arrange it in such a way to invade the Uttaman story. Or Uttaman as the art, so natural and innocent, which is been stuck with venom, back stabbed etc., and finally reaches the censor board, which is deaf to its freedom but listens only to the governing (social) parties - and then its all about how Art wins over its governing bodies. Or technically speaking, the shot where you see the back of Kamal in the Mall is the same shot of the frontal of Senguttuvan. Or the 'screen' - peephole - that shows Manoranjan being carried away - POV of Aparna and how its cut to the theatre - the stage. Or how the enjoyment of the victory by the people magically turns into the cheers of audience ... So on so forth.
Being a story-hunter, I can talk about the Uttaman story, its references or other similar tales which are funny and thought provoking. Or being interested in technical endeavors be it acting or naration or filmaking itself, we can go deep into the craft - editing/cinemotography/direction/etc., - which I feel less is talked about with Uttama Villain as people are quite busy with the screenplay as it was done by Kamal. If Ramesh Aravindh wrote the screen play and Kamal did the direction, the turn of events would be interesting to note from the fans end. Reminds me of Kannadasan's words.
Anyway, the value is not how much you can talk, its how much you can take. Being a pot maybe great to be filled, but don't forget that a pot takes the same amount of water from the well as will as the ocean. Its upto to an individual to explore oneself, and each of his expressions defines who he really is.
Good going Arvind, I take the opputunity to thank you and the rest of the few including kumarsr, for giving flavoured views on different aspects/subjects of the film. Learnt a lot, and expecting more.

I have heard many saying andrea is used for masala..what can i say about that?
Andrea is complex important character in the movie..She is the latest lover for kamal and for her its the first love, thats why she felt a lot knowing going to miss the lover without spending lot of time like kamal with other relationship..Also she has other guilty feeling along with KH while bhaskar reads the letter and oorvashi in hospital scene..Kamal wants andrea to be with her whenever the past relationships/feelings are exposed..the reaction of andrea is shown clearly when MSB reads the letter, oorvashi polambals in hospital..the reaction of andrea is ultimate when oorvashi talks about beauty "enga enna vittu poiruvaarnu oru byam"
Followed by car scene which is another great scene in UV movie which we discussed in whatsapp today with dr,anban..
Andrea - "varu pesa kulla apdiyae nerupalli kotna maadhri irunththu"
Dr MD Ds - "hold your horses,we have chauffer(driver)"
Kamal -"Thirunavukarsu viswasamaana aalu, yaarkitaiyum solla maataar, blah and blah"
Andrea -"then naan enna santhoshamma,sangojamma"
Kamal - "Enna venum unakku"
Andrea -"varu en patient, avungalum nallarukanum, naanum avamanam edhuvuma illaama vaazhanum ,so intha carla irukura 3 aamabalaingalum enakku sathyam pannanum"
then everyone will promise and kamal end with "chitraguptan kaetpaanae, naan actor samaalichikaran" followed by hug & kaadhalaan kadvavul mun song..
this is from one of article
"ஆண்ட்ரியாவுக்கும் தனக்கும் இருக்கும் கள்ளக்காதல் யாருக்கும் தெரியக் கூடாதென்று ட்ரைவரிடமும் நண்பரிடமும் சத்தியம் வாங்கி, அதைக் காட்சியாக்கி, ஊருக்கெல்லாம் சொல்கிற தைரியம் கமலைத் தவிர யாருக்கு வரும்?"
What a dignified way of portraying the truth behind kalla kaadhal..How can they say andrea is used for masala..
Hub lost it's purity long time back. Same thing happened to IR fans but many of them settled well with a dedicated space for one and only IR. I think we also need to follow the same path. Create a space dedicated for Kamal and bring every Kamalians across the globe to contribute. There are many aspects of Kamal in general needs appreciation without any second thought. But here who is the audience we are talking to? Think about it and take a right decision.
All agreed, it is after-all a visual medium. But any view can be subject to scrutiny, counter points and challenges, no? It is also interesting to speculate what the likely intention of the creator could have been to see how one's view compares and contrasts. But perhaps a larger point is, when something is subject to so many interpretations, I feel it generally does not attract the general audience, especially in TN. Not that it is necessarily bad or wrong, but commercial viability is important. In the case of UV, that does not seem to be the case. Anecdotally, on the web we don't see many complaining they do not understand the movie and it seems to be doing well, slowly picking up some steam. Also, as a side point, in some cases, it becomes difficult to understand, by just reading a review, whether the movie as package worked for the person or not? Even when the supposed review is quite long as in this case:
http://theseventhart.info/2015/05/05/mirror-mirror/
But, deep down, one cannot escape the pleasurable fact that all this deep analysis is only reserved for KH and a very selective few. Is that good or bad?
Guys, Dr. Chandra PMed in the middle of my night asking me to ban him.
Before I could do anything, the damage was done.
I think he needed a break and I too agree with him.
Whether he wants to come back here or not is entirely up to him.
Can we please stop talking about the past please?
Doctor invited all true kamal fans to whatsapp group provided you are ready to bear with severe criticism of kamal himself in the group..
Just PM to Anban if you want to join..
How about Singapore? Is that included with Malaysia or others?
Yes you are right for the highlighted part..
just take the best scene in UV ,Kamal-Son conversation..forget the picturization and read out the dialogues and situation alone it will not have any impact..but the way its directed took that scene to altogether different level, probably one of the best in tamil films..
But the question here is whether ramesh aravind is director or ghost director?? That doubt is there in everyones mind so people are talking only about screenplay and not the direction..
Here is a better shot I took at the cinema.

It struck me last night while reminiscing abt the film - why is UV clicking with the so-called 'family' audience? young and old?
oh yes!
Because, this is THE most 'K Balachanderesque' movie anyone has ever made - the screenplay, camera angles, the zoomed in closeups, the silhouette shots (be it the Kamal shadow on the UV poster while conversing with MSB and Andrea listening, or when Kamal falls down and the set prop falls on him, he sees the shadow of another actor in the larger than life getup looming large as the impending death itself (kinda nod to the masked man chasing Jayapradha in Ninaithaley inikkum?!), or the dialogs - they are all very, very Balachanderesque in nature - with the Kamal flavor and treatment thrown in!
Its like having decoction filter coffee in a brand new Target store cup!
Thats why UV is clicking well - the Balachander style of filmmaking and narration cut across social barriers in the 70s/80s with a no-nonsense approach towards human relationships and Kamal as his sishyan has given a terrific tribute to his guru by creating a script and filming it with another sishya RA in a way that reflects and is a tribute to the KB school of film-making!
That commenters comments are in the range of ""மீனு மீனு - மீன் வாங்கலயோ மீனு மீனு"ன்னு கூவி கூவி விக்கற utter crass type - இந்த மாதிரி சூரியன பாத்து சிங்கு சிகான் பாட்டு பாடரவங்கள உதாசீனம் பண்ணாலே போதும் - thats why I chose to ignore that commenters comments long time back - Dr தான் கொஞ்சம் உணர்ச்சி வசப்பட்டுவிட்டார்.
As per sify box office report, UV is average , inspite of all the release time issues and the theme, I think this is a good result:
http://www.sify.com/movies/boxoffice...8&cid=13525926
Sila RK fans ellam numbers (usa, uk) pottutu, flop nu solran. Besides that i heard its doing poor in Andhra/KL.
Frankly, i dont expect big numbers for a KB esque film with Kamal nuances intact.

Its certainly not a flop in US. Has made $570K so far after the 2nd weekend. I would think that's a hit. Unlikely to touch 750K though .. 2nd weekend collection has somewhat dwindled with about 65k added. Will mostly not get into the 3rd.
Overall domestic as I said earlier, its going to be an above average grosser.
Interesting points......but as a film maker (director / story writer) will he /she be really happy if the scene that he / she conceived in a way is taken in an entirely different way? if it has multi layers as some of the kamal / manirathnam movies, may be the creator won't care, but in general, i feel the creator will be frustrated if the view point of a majority about a scene is taken in a different way and that leads to the failure :)
also, by applying your logic, sometimes even a dumb product could be interpreted as a brilliant one if the interpreter is a genius..... reminds of a scene from Saadhal illaiyel kaadhal (written by CHO) where S.Ve.Shekar recites a so called poem and the college principal puts in all his brain to get a meaning out of it to award him the first prize

One more easter egg I believe no one noticed… Isn’t Yamini a stand-in for Anbe Sivam’s Bala? They were in love, and when he was at his most vulnerable, a girl’s father with an agenda (Nasser there, KV here) and his Man Friday (Santhanabarathi there, and Chokku here) told some lies to make sure they don’t meet again… There the denouement is in the form of a letter from Mr. Sivam, where here it is letters from him to her and vice versa..
@mappi
UV is based on autofiction which is very rare in the world and none in india..
Kamal films are known for "symbolism"..
be it "en udhirathin vidhai" word when kamal looks through the window at the daughter-son along with jayaram or
his shadow in the screen along with villain word when bhaskar reads the letter..there are many
These are the symbols that not only approaches me but to many people..
If everyone becomes film makers which is not going to happen anyway then who will be the audience..
Apart from the common things like "Symbolism" that appraoches many people there are few things that affects the individuals which has been shared here to understand how others feel..nothing wrong and thats the beauty of the discussion..Even if the scene is simple or nothing its interpreted in big way when it comes to kamal movies because people believe his movies are beyond entertainmemt and artistically viewed..whereas for all other actors people watch just for entertainment, because of the same reason people expects more from kamal and setting high standards..
In general we have seen people raising there standards suddenly while watching kamal movies and compare with world cinema thereby criticizing him..for all other movies they will not raise there standards..
Criticizing is fine but it must be genuine and should not be done intentionally to pull him down..

This happens, particularly when some one is an anti-fan (fan of a rival) or like in kamal's case, some one has a personal dislike for the person...... if you are dont like some one, criticize whatever that comes out of them.......genuine fans should spot such comments coming out of hatred and brush it away..... rather, getting annoyed and indulging in what we say attack is the best form of defense for such petty matters, is like falling into the trap set by those people, exactly what an anti-fan would like to see
