yes, yes. RR is the more mundane version of Abirami. I am glad the movie eschewed the common cliches (I was half expecting Saurabh Shukla to emerge from Sadiya Siddiqui's house in the last scene), but there is only so much a film can lampoon TV serials. I mean, it has become such an easy target that it is not even funny anymore. I have watched Mithya and I would copy paste my Raghu Romeo comments. Save the first and last 30 minutes, the film was a bit of a drag and too sentimental. That said, I liked it better than Raghu Romeo, since it was darker. I understand the subtexts and layers in his movies (seach for morality in RR and questions of identity in Mithya), but I just think they aren't that great. Am watching MD today. Mixed Doubles: Now here is a movie I liked - stat to finish. No pretences, no sentimentality, just straight drama without any distractions :thumbsup: . Well written and very well acted. Almost tempted to say it was the best of Rajat Kapoor's movies I have seen.

Hmm.. maybe you are right. Someone needs to start it. Maybe there is also still an element of conservativeness in our society. I don't know if we can make a 'Mixed Doubles' or have the conversations between Lene and her parents (DevD) in our films without affecting the sensibilities of our people. I agree with PR here, that Hindi film industry is catering to a much bigger market, a wider audience, and their filmmakers can afford to take greater risks than their Tamil counterparts.
However, I think we should give significant credit to the filmmakers too. We can't explain everything with market mechanics. Curiously, "multiplex audience" is used to explain away everything in this respect. What are the multiplex audiences really doing? They're just watching films "they like." I don't see any remarkable difference between them and other kinds of audience. For starters, they are just as self-serving. How cheerful are they really about films that challenge or unsettle their position as the audience? A film like Mixed Doubles didn't do as well as Bheja Fry did. No Smoking bombed big time, both commercially and critically. If you take last year, films like Mithya and Oye Lucky Oye Lucky Oye did not do very well really, while a Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was a big hit. (Here I'm not qualititatively judging these films.) One can quite easily figure the kind of films that are almost sure to work in the "market." In other words, my point is some sort of "surefire" framework exists in the multiplex market too, just like anywhere else.
