Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam blacked out: The beginning of the year saw Kamal Haasan's much anticipated spy thriller Vishwaroopam in the news for all the wrong reasons. First, the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association threatened a complete boycott of the film, when Mr Haasan announced a direct-to-home premiere of the film. The DTH launch of the film was cancelled and the release date was postponed from January 10 to January 25.

On January 23, two days before the release of the film, the Tamil Nadu government banned the screening of Vishwaroopam in the state after Muslim groups expressed concern that the film could disturb communal harmony. Soon, protests against the movie spread to neighbouring Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala and screenings of the movie were affected. Calling it 'cultural terrorism,' the actor filed a petition in the Madras High Court. On January 29, the ban was lifted by the court but the government appealed against that verdict and won.

It was only on February 1 that the actor reached an agreement with Muslim groups to edit seven scenes from the film which they had found objectionable. The film finally released on February 7 and had fetched Rs 120 crore in first four days.

Kamal Haasan's Toughest Role Ever

Kamal haasan, outspoken, unconventional and very aware that his boundaries stretch farther than those of most others, is no stranger to controversies. But last year he faced the biggest storm of his career. With Vishwaroopam, a mega-budget film that revolves around international terrorism, Haasan walked on that thin ice of religion and community.

The first big controversy around Viswaroopam saw fearful distributors and exhibitors go up-in-arms as Haasan announced a simultaneous direct-to-home (DTH) release. Technological and marketing progress has not really been Tamil cinema’s strongest suit, especially with polarising viewpoints from all the unions and associations involved in the business. Not surprisingly, the decision to use the DTH platform at the same time as the theatrical release was an unpopular one.

Add to this, there was the accusation of religious disharmony: It was contended that Vishwaroopam portrayed its Muslim characters in poor light. Ironically, the protests were led by heated, near-violent groups of people calling for the ban of the film’s release which the state stalled, citing security reasons. All this after it had already got an okay from the censor board. Even more ironically, it then released in several areas with denser Muslim populations than Tamil Nadu and those audiences predominantly found nothing untoward in the film.

For the first time, Haasan, 59, displayed emotional eloquence in what seemed like a spontaneous, impromptu press conference. He spoke of his respect for all communities and his right of freedom of speech through the medium of cinema. He talked about how “he is fed up of playing dirty political games”. He said he despaired being misunderstood and targeted by miscreants and troublemakers when he has pledged his whole life to the art and passion of cinema.

And then, there was the ultimatum: If India didn’t let him work, he would even move out. Like the late artist MF Hussain.

In the melting pot of good, bad, ugly, mediocre and genius, also called Indian cinema, it is not often that one finds someone whose perspective and work constantly breaks barriers, jumps out of the box and blurs boundaries. Kamalji (as he is addressed respectfully by several peers and protégées) began his association with the silver screen when he was just a little boy, aged four. Stalwart producer AVM Chettiar’s son M Saravanan noticed the fire within him and suggested to his father that Haasan take over the passionately eloquent little boy’s role in the wildly famous Kalathur Kanamma.

There was no looking back after that, although the journey was not always smooth sailing. It would take an entire volume to talk about his long career, which spans over 200 Indian films in Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Hindi, Kannada and Telugu.

His entry into films as a four-year-old kid in Kalathur Kanamma (1958) is still remembered but his first big Tamil film breakthrough was a film called Apoorva Ragangal (1975), directed by K Balachander. Today, that film is remembered more for launching the career of a superstar: Rajinikanth. But while the audiences took note of Rajinikanth for his charisma, they noted Haasan for his immense talent. He did close to a hundred films in different languages in the following decade—these include 16 Vayathinile with Sridevi and Rajinikanth, Avargal (again with Rajinikanth), Sigappu Rojakkal and Kalyanaraman.

He essayed some outstanding (and outstandingly different) roles—from a mentally challenged simpleton to a disturbed serial killer to a ventriloquist. Several of these are multi-starrers with Rajinikanth and Sridevi. Many of his films during this time are in Malayalam and several others are dubbed into various languages.

Over the next several years, the willingness to experiment both off- and on-screen saw him portray a range of characters, produce films, sing songs, experiment, inspire, provoke and, as a result of all this, build a huge fan following.

However, after the ban, for some time, it seemed as if the actor would leave India forever. Newspapers and television channels followed him 24/7. The press conferences at his home/office were crowded. He was trending on Twitter for days. It was painful to see an artiste (at that time, he called himself a businessman trying to trade his wares, but couldn’t) fight what seemed to be a losing battle.

But soon, the tide turned in his favour—about two weeks after the ban (and after a successful release everywhere else in the world, including regions with heavier Muslim populations than Tamil Nadu), Vishwaroopam was given the go-ahead for release. Despite the delay, the film garnered huge sympathetic support and raked in the returns. It was a huge worldwide hit, a fantastic PR vehicle and Haasan was back in business.

Focussed as he is, Vishwaroopam 2 is already nearly done and will see its theatrical release in early 2014… provided no controversies and protests pop up from around it.

கமல்-விஸ்வரூபம்
தமிழ் சினிமாவின் முன்னணி நட்சத்திரங்களில் சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் ரஜினியின் படம் இந்த ஆண்டில் வெளிவரவில்லை. கலைஞானி கமலஹாசனின் ‘விஸ்வரூபம்’ படம் பல்வேறு தடைகளுக்கு பின் வெளியான வசூலில் அபார சாதனை படைத்து அவரின் விஸ்வரூபத்தை பறை சாற்றியது.

சூர்யா-சூப்பர்

கமல், ரஜினி ஆகியோருக்கு அடுத்த தலைமுறை நடிகர்களில் அஜீத், விஜய், சூர்யா, விக்ரம் ஆகியோரில் பெண்களை அதிக அளவு ரசிகர்களாக கொண்டிருக்கும் சூர்யாவுக்கு இந்த வருடம் சூப்பரான வருடம் என்றே கூறவேண்டும். இவரது ‘சிங்கம்-2’ அதிக வசூலை குவித்து மிகப்பெரிய சாதனையை படைத்தது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

அஜீத்-அபாரம்

அஜீத் நடிப்பில் ஊழல் மற்றும் தகவல் தொழில்நுட்பத்தை மையமாக கொண்டு வெளிவந்த ‘ஆரம்பம்’ மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றியை பெற்றது. குறிப்பாக வெளிநாடுகளில் ‘எந்திரன்’ மற்றும் ‘விஸ்வரூபம்’, ‘சிவாஜி’ மற்றும் ‘தசாவதாரம்’ ஆகிய படங்களுக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக 2.5 கோடி ரூபாய்க்கு மேல் வசூலாகி சாதனை படைத்தது. தமிழகத்தில் மட்டும் இப்படம் 60 கோடிக்கு மேல் வசூலை குவித்திருப்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

ஆர்யா-ஆச்சரியம்

ஹீரோவாக மட்டுமே நடிப்பேன் என்றில்லாமல் மற்ற நடிகர்களோடு இணைந்து நடித்து தனது திறமையான நடிப்பால் ரசிகர்கள் மனதில் இடம்பிடித்துவரும் ஆர்யா 2013-ம் வருடத்தில் ஆச்சரியமான நடிகராகதான் தெரிகிறார். அஜித்துடன் இணைந்து ‘ஆரம்பம்’, ஜெய் உடன் இணைந்து ‘ராஜா ராணி’ ஆகிய படங்களில் நடித்து ஸ்கோர் செய்த ஆர்யாவுக்கு ‘இரண்டாம் உலகம்’ மட்டுமே சற்று சரிவை கொடுத்துள்ளது.

விஜய்-சுமார்

அஜித்துக்கு போட்டியாக கருதப்படும் விஜய்யின் ‘தலைவா’ படமும் பல்வேறு தடைகளுக்கு மத்தியில் வெளியாகி சுமாரான வெற்றியை பெற்றது. இந்த ஆண்டை பொறுத்தவரை விஜய்க்கு சற்று இறங்குமுகம் என்றே சொல்லவேண்டும்.

விஷால்-துடிப்பு

தனது துடிப்பான நடிப்பால் ரசிகர்களை கவர்ந்து வந்த விஷாலுக்கு தொடர் தோல்விக்கு பின் சுமாராக ஒடிய ‘பட்டத்து யானை’ மற்றும் மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றியை கொடுத்த ‘பாண்டிய நாடு’ ஆகிய படங்கள் அவருக்கு மறுபடியும் உற்சாகத்தை வரவழைத்துள்ளது. அதே உற்சாகத்தோடு பல்வேறு படங்களில் சுறுசுறுப்பாக நடித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

விக்ரம்-வீழ்ச்சி

தனது நடிப்பாற்றலால் அனைத்து தரப்பு ரசிகர்களையும் கவர்ந்துள்ள சீயான் விக்ரமிற்கு இந்த ஆண்டு வீழ்ச்சி என்று தான் சொல்லவேண்டும். இந்த ஆண்டு வெளிவந்த ‘டேவிட்’ படம் எதிர்பார்த்த அளவு வெற்றி பெறாதததே அதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம்.

இளம் நடிகர்களில் சிம்புவின் படம் எதுவும் இந்த ஆண்டில் வெளிவரவில்லை.

தனுஷ்-சரிவு

தனுஷ் நடிப்பில் இந்தியில் வெளியாகி பெரும்வெற்றி பெற்ற ‘ராஞ்சனா’ படம் தமிழில் பொழிமாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டது. இப்படத்திற்கு தமிழகத்தில் பெரிய வரவேற்பில்லாமல் போனது. தனுஷின் அபாரமான நடிப்பாற்றலை வெளிப்படுத்திய ‘மரியான்’ படமும் எதிர்பார்த்த அளவு வெற்றியை பெற முடியவில்லை. ‘நய்யாண்டி’ படம் மட்டுமே சுமாரான வெற்றியை பெற்றது.

புதுமுகங்களில் புகழ் பெற்றவர்கள்

இந்த ஆண்டில் புதுமுக நடிகரான சிவகார்த்திகேயனுககு ‘எதிர்நீச்சல்’, ‘வருத்தப்படாத வாலிபர் சங்கம்’ ஆகிய படங்கள் மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றியை கொடுத்து, தயாரிப்பாளர்களின் நடிகராக அவதாரமெடுத்திருக்கிறார். தற்போது ஹன்சிகாவுடன் இணைந்து ‘மான் கராத்தே’ படத்தில் நடித்து வருவது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

சுமார் மூஞ்சி குமாரான விஜய் சேதுபதி கதைக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் உள்ள படங்களில் தனது திறமையான நடிப்பினால் சூப்பர் நடிப்பு குமாராக வலம் வருகிறார்.

குணச்சித்திர வேடங்களில் கலக்கிய சத்யராஜ் மற்றும் பார்த்திபன்

கடந்த காலங்களில் மிகப்பெரிய ஹீரோவாக வலம் வந்த சத்யராஜ் தற்போது குணச்சித்திர வேடங்களில் நடித்து கலக்கிவருகிறார். ‘தலைவா’, ‘ராஜா ராணி’ மற்றும் ‘வருத்தப்படாத வாலிபர் சங்கம்’ ஆகிய படங்களில் சிறப்பாக நடித்து ரசிகர்கள் தனக்குரிய இடத்தை தக்கவைத்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.

நீண்ட இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு கரு.பழனியப்பனின் ‘ஜன்னல் ஓரம்’ படத்தில் நடித்த பார்த்திபன் தனது நக்கல் நடிப்பை மறுபடியும் ரசிகர்களுக்கு விருந்தாக கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். வருங்காலங்களிலும் தங்களது வித்தியாசமான நடிப்பின் மூலம் இவர்கள் இருவரும் ரசிகர்களை மகிழ்விப்பார்கள் என்று நம்புவோம்.

Kamal Haasan will play an ageing superstar in his next; has also signed Ananth Mahadevan for a part.

About 10 days ago, Ananth Mahadevan was surprised by a call from Kamal Haasan. "He wanted me to play the role of his friendcum-manager in his next film," reveals the actor-filmmaker.

While Ananth is tight-lipped about the project, a source close to the development tells TOI that the drama revolves around an ageing actor trying to exorcise his past who decides to mend the bridges he burned on the way to the top "It's in the same league and genre as a 'Kagaz Ke Phool', 'Fedora' or 'Sunset Boulevard' but not a remake or an adaptation. Kamal will be playing his age. It's unfortunate that a 50 plus actor in India doesn't often get the same opportunities, though in Hollywood, actors like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino continue to rule the roost. Kamal is trying to break that ceiling," asserts the source.

This is not the first collaboration between Ananth and Kamal. The former also plays a significant role in ' Vishwaroopam 2' which is set to release this month. Interestingly, their characters are often in conflict in the film as Ananth plays a government agent who plays by the book while Kamal's character in the drama is an agent with rather unconventional methods.

Meanwhile the sequel to the 2013 spy thriller moves from the US to the UK. "Two decades ago, I was clicked with Kamal outside the Taj and when the photograph appeared in a film magazine, a friend pointed out that there was an uncanny similarity between the two of us. We could almost pass of as brothers. The observation was repeated when he posted stills from 'Vishwaroopam 2' on Facebook," says Ananth.
