Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan - Part 7

Hello everybody, it's been a while and I really miss a lot.

As usual, great posts by one and all, sharing of experiences.... this thread always rocks.

By the way, saw Dr. Siva for the first time ( Dr Zhivago has got nothing to do with it :) ).

A very simple storyline and a very normal film, except for the great songs. It looks to me that, NT is struggling throughout the film to get at least one scene where he can score in extra ordinary performance, and thank God, he gets one too !!!

Prem Navaz has done a mis-deed and refuses to take the blame. NT goes to his place and pleads to him to accept the innocent girl (Jayamalini), but he continuously refutes the charges against him and at one point he shifts the blame on NT. Unable to bear this false accusation, NT loses his temper and beats him up hardly and PN falls down on the ground.

NT now moves away from PN, tensed and feeling sorry for his act….all the while fidgeting for his pipe, lights up a smoke and takes a puff. He begins to smoke nervously and the way he gasps at regular intervals…myriad emotions just playing all over his face….my God ! just awesome. This brilliant performance and the songs makes the movie worth watching.

If Dr. Zhivago is one of David Lean’s master-piece, the above mentioned performance is our own Master’s piece (of great acting).

Another thing I wanted to share is, about " Bharatha Vilas" which was recently telecasted in on of the channels.

Well, I'm not going into the "message" kind of stuff in the film, but on the other hand, it was a good entertainer and most importantly, the HUMOUR pervading constantly right from the beginning till the end... simply superb.

The scenes were NT exchange banters with his "manasatchi", "Sakka podu.." song are all great fun to watch.

In the sequence where both NT & KRV lose their job and the "Gift of the Magi" kind of episode following it are sheer fun to watch.

"...enakku vayila konjam kozhuppu jaasthi.." :lol:

Again, the characterisation of NT itself was finely crafted.... though it may not be a perfect arc, atleast, the director managed to finish it nicely.

Bharatha Vilas was the first Tamil film to be shown in color in Malaysian TV, back in 1978. :)

inspite of starstudded movie everyone had equal importance in the movie right from VKR, Rajasulochana to Jaichitra

Watched the first half of Uthamaputhiran

Vikraman's exaggerated mannerisms, the coronation scene and the contrasting performance in the role of Parthiban is something watchable several times over !

Both of them are taken by Padmini's beauty. While Parthiban's gaze is respectful and endearing, Vikraman's is lusty and crude. No lines here to differentiate. Just facial expression !

The scene where Kannamba chances upon his Vikraman's room where he is indulging in excesses, is once again well enacted. From an all powerful king, he has to alternate to feeling like a delinquent son. But then, like a spoilt brat he feels that his privacy is being intruded upon (but is not brazen enough to say it) . You see that vacillation in his performance. That is such a subtle difference.

The film must be one of Nambiar's best performances. Sure, he is much more limited actor and given more to stagey histrionics than subtler shades. But that really works in this movie: Right from the opening scene - "adhil onRu iRandhE piRandhadhu" - he makes his mark. And the epic line "senkOl avanidam, sarvAdhigaaram ennidam".

Thangavelu's long career will always amaze me. 'shabbA ! :x

Unfortunately the DVD got stopped in the confrontation scene where Nambiar deviously presents the case as if he was protecting Vikraman from the competitive aspirations of his brother.

Please avoid buying multiple movie DVDs from MoserBaer, they snip scenes and have poor video quality too.

Must catch the rest on Tv some time.

நடிகர் திலகத்தின் 258 வது 26 / 1 /1986 தேதி வெளியான படம். ரீமேக் கிங் கே.பாலாஜி தாயரித்த படம். "மருமகள்" படம், 1977 இல் வெளியான Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaye என்ற ஹிந்தி படத்தின் தழுவல்.
1977 ஆம் வருடம் ஹிந்தியில் எதிர் பாராத வெற்றி பெற்றது. ஹிந்தியில் madanpuri நடித்த வேடத்தில், தமிழில் நடிகர் திலகம்.


வித்தியாசமான கதை ஒன்றும் அல்ல. படத்தின் நடிகர் திலகதிருக்கு மகனாக சுரேஷ் சுதத்திரமாக, எதற்கும் கவலை படாத, சோம்பேறியான, பெண் நண்பருடன் ஊர் திரியும், கேரக்டர். நடிகர் திலகம் உடம்பு சரியில்லாமல் படுக்கையில் படுத்துகொண்டிருபார். தன் மகனில் லீலைகளை தெரிந்து கொண்ட நடிகர் திலகம், தன் உடம்பு நிலைமை மோசமாகவதுகுள், தன் மருமகளை பார்க்க ஆசை படுகிறார். சுரேஷ், தன் கேர்ள் பிரென்ட் மெட்ராஸ்
வரமுடியாத நிலையில், ராதாவை (நடிகை ரேவதி) தன் கேர்ள் பிரென்ட் வரும் வரை காதலியாக நடிக்க அழைத்து வருகிறார். அனால், விதியின் விளையாட்டு, நடிக்க வந்த மருமகளிடம் இருத்து ஒருவிதமான பெற்றோரின் அன்பும், பாசமும் நடிகர் திலகத்திற்கு கிடைக்கிறது. என்னதான் நடிக்க வந்தாலும், நடிகர் திலகத்தின் மேல் அன்பும், பாசமும், அவரை நன்றாக கவனித்து கொள்ள, நடிகர் திலகத்தின் உடல் நிலையும், வாழ்க்கையும் நல்ல நிலைமை அடைய, தன் மகனுடைய எதிர்காலமும் நன்றாக ஆகும் என்று நினைக்கிறார். அதே போல், ராதாவும் (ரேவதி) , ஒரு தந்தையின் பாசத்தையும் , பரிவையும், நடிகர் திலகத்திடம் இருந்து கிடைக்கிறது. நாட்கள் நகர, நகர, ராதா (ரேவதி) தான் நடிக்க வந்ததை மறத்து விடுகிறார். பிறகு நடப்பவை வெள்ளி திரையில்.

இந்த படத்தை பொறுத்த வரையில், எனக்கு ஒருவிதமான அட்டச்மெண்ட். படத்தை பொறுத்த வரையில் ஹீரோ சுரேஷ் தான் என்றாலும், நடிகர் திலகம் , ரேவதி வேடங்களும், அவர்களுடைய நடிப்பும் தான் படத்தின் உயிர்.

இந்த படத்தின் மிக பெரிய பிளஸ் பாயிண்ட்: நடிகர் திலகம், ரேவதி வரும் காட்சி எல்லாம் செண்டிமெண்ட் மற்றும் நகைசுச்வை. இந்த படத்தை பார்த்த பொது எழந்த கேள்வி - எப்படி இவ்வளவு சுலபமாக கிழவன் வேடத்தில் infuse with charisma மற்றும் படம் முழுவதும் படுத்து கொண்டே படுக்கையை மட்டும் அல்ல , படத்தையும் ஆக்கிரமித்து கொண்டிருபார்.

ஹிந்தியில் வெற்றி பெற்ற அளவிற்கு தமிழில் வெற்றி பெறவில்லை.
காரனம்............................................ ..................? தெரிந்தால் சொல்லவும். (வட இந்தய வாசனையுடன் வந்ததால் என நெனைக்கிறேன் - செட்டிங் மற்றும் மேக்கப் எல்லாம் வட இந்தய வாசனை).

இந்த படத்தின் மிக பெரிய பிளஸ் பாயிண்ட்: நடிகர் திலகம், ரேவதி வரும் காட்சி எல்லாம் செண்டிமெண்ட் மற்றும் நகைசுச்வை. இந்த படத்தை பார்த்த பொது எழந்த கேள்வி - எப்படி இவ்வளவு சுலபமாக கிழவன் வேடத்தில் infuse with charisma மற்றும் படம் முழுவதும் படுத்து கொண்டே படுக்கையை மட்டும் அல்ல , படத்தையும் ஆக்கிரமித்து கொண்டிருபார் - when i think of the image obsessed actors of today.

Rajapart scores because of NT, because of MSV's haunting songs, and was let down when they elected to dub NT during the Shakespeare thing. We all wouldn't have minded NT's own accent on English. Come on, avar English pesurathey oru azhagu. Ejjample: Gouvaram. Listen to him say, Not only you must stand, you must stayyyyy..... !!! I am getting goosebumps as I type this. :D Anyway, lots of sample in that film.

Ah!…well, the diction in Gowravam is unique, phenomenal, surpassing and even unquestionable. But to do a Shakespeare…mmm... its something different, isn’t it? I mean….it would be like Lawrence Olivier reciting “ Edukkavo? Korkavo” (when I thought of an equivalent for To Be or Not To Be, only this one came closer, though different in meaning), or Kamba Ramayanam or “Kisthi, thirai vari, vatti…”. It looks odd. That that man, that that culture, that that language :D . I would rather prefer an adaptation in our own language with international standards.

In tamil cinema, if a director like Kurosawa had made a film like “Ran”, which is an adaptation of King Lear, how nice it would have been if Nadigar Thilagam had been casted in the lead. If the industry failed to produce Kurosawa’s, NT is not the person to be blamed.

Again, requesting everyone, please do not take this as a complaint because we had our own great directors here and the films NT did with those directors are all immortal master-pieces. Our only concern is that he didn’t get global recognition & appreciation for his works, just because he was born in this part of the world and that too before globalisation, liberalization…era, and because he was made a victim of dirty politics.

He was versatile enough to play a Kanji Watanabe as well as a Kanji Periyavar. He was a POWER HOUSE, but unfortunately few directors used him to light up just a zero watt or 25 watts bulb.

அவர் மட்டும் முருகப் பெருமான் மாதிரி உலகை வலம் வந்திருந்தால், பல Oscar-களையும், Golden Globe-களையும் அள்ளிக் கொண்டு வந்திருப்பார். ஆனால் என்ன செய்வது? அவர் தான் கணேசனாயிற்றே, தாய் நாடும்,தனது ரசிகர்களும் தான் உலகம் என்று இங்கேயே வலம் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். அதனால் தான் அவருக்கு கோடான கோடி ரசிக நெஞ்சங்களின் அன்பு என்ற மாங்கனி கிடைத்தது.

Take avan dhan manidhan, a flick that i ideologically dismiss as being a symptom of Sivaji Ganesan's getting sucked into prevailing mediocre standards. When he has to urgently gather a few lakhs as his business flounders, he makes calls. The first call he makes is as a proud, succesful businessman, who is so confident of his business acumen, and believes that people will come running to finance him. He calls up someone and says "remember the 2 lakhs you said you'll invest on me - and i rejected it - last week; i need it now". There is no request, just casual demand, almost as if it's his birthright. Rejected, watch out for his next call to another acquaintance. There is uncertainty, a struggle at realisation of his business mortality, the body language reflecting the change. It is not a dramatic change from royalty to melodramatic fall. Just a subtle change.

What for all this nuance? In the very next scene or so, the director weaves in a "en kaigaL ipdi(open palm downwards) irundhu dhAnE pazhakkam; ipdi(oepn palm upwards" irukkaDhE" melodramatic exposition of the same sense of helplessnessn defeat and proud till i fall disposition.

It is grossly unjust on the part of history to make mountains out of molehils like Bachchan just because he happened to be the tallest veteran in an era of globalaisation, liberalisation etc.
