Annaiyaaga Maaravaa, as you say, was quite popular when Marumagal was released. It is an enchanting song (Revathy Sivajiyin Annaiyaaga Maaruvadhu...stretch?) and CB does a nice Ravindra Jain!
Now that Saamandhippoo has been mentioned, I recall a nice duet from that film: "Maalai Vaelai Rathi Maaran Poojai..." SPS-MVD?
Listening to Kaadhal Sorkkam for the first time. Interesting tune, uninteresting interludes.
Talking of rare SJ songs, here is a duet (with PJC) that I'd like to listen to...
"Paavai Idhazh Thaenmaadhulai, Kannangalo Senththaamarai..."
(a later S-G tune that somewhat resembled the above (by the same singers?) was Sandhanap Punnagai Sindhidum Maenagai...ring a bell?)
Hi Naaz..
I think "mAlai vELai" is SPB, SPS and MD is ofcourse MV :P

Forgive my memory...that I get 45-50% of the data right is something of a jackpot! :) I am glad that you recall that duet!

Naaz,
I got an email from someone mentioning the Hindi original of "Marumagal". I am amazed at how you all can remember all these details. However, I think I like Tamil Marumagal songs much better.

My memory is so hopeless, I have to edit my posts a couple of times!
POTW creates these interesting puzzles for me, a sort of song trace Sudoku, where one detail leads to (semi)total recall, or prompts another needle-in-a-haystack search!
CBs tunes were certainly lively, if simple. RJ, on the other hand, had a certain structure in arrangement from which he seldom deviated. Smooth flutes and orchestral sweeps, but always reminiscent of an earlier tune by him.

Is Poonthottam, Poovil Pennin Jaadaigal... a solo by SPS?
Look where Maalai Vaelai brought me!!

Song: nAnO kaN pArththEn
Film: Puthiyavan
Singers: K.J.Yesudas
Lyricist: ?
MD: V.S.Narasimhan
Year: 1984
V.S.Narasimhan made his debut as a music director in "Achamillai
Achamillai". The rustic songs from that film became very popular. But
after that VSN composed mostly modern and westernized tunes. He was a
breath of fresh air in the mid 80s that was dominated by IR and TR.
Following his successful debut, VSN composed music for films such as
"Puthiyavan", "Kalyana Agathigal", "Ayiram Pookkal Malarattum",
"Kadaikkan Paarvai", and a few more not so popular films. His career as
an MD slowed down in the early 90s. VSN is a highly skilled violinist,
both in Indian and Western genres, and is a well respected artiste
still in demand in the music industry.
"nAnO kaN pArththEn" is a simple but lovely composition by
V.S.Narasimhan. He uses various instruments but in a limited manner and
creates a song you can shake your head to, while Yesudas's smooth voice
rubs you like a feather. The lyrics start off well with a nice pallavi
but the charanams are ordinary.
"Puthiyavan" starred Murali and Anita, directed by Ameerjan (or is it
Ameer John?) whom I believe was a product of K.Balachandar school.
Ameerjan directed the big hit "Poo Vilangu" which launched the
successful career of Murali, the eternal college student.
Other popular songs from Puthiyavan are "thEn mazaiyilE dhinam", and
"kaNNE kalar kalarA".
