Good or bad, Major, like many of the yesteryear actors, had a unique style of his own. It's easy to mimic these artiste, because of their recognisable style. You don't find mimic artistes doing a, say, Talaivasal Vijay, or Nizhalgal Ravi.
They were character artiste because they don't really have to act their pants (or vesthi, depending) off. They had the look, style, mannerism that suits certain character and you better stand up to the lead or overshadow him or her or it if he or she or it is weak.
