Wow... just read all the posts from past 2 days... Cedy brother. ..superb work...very well done and summarized.
Box Office: Why 355 Crore Grosser 'Happy New Year' Isn't Big as 110-crore Grosser 'Kaththi'!
The Indian film industry has witnessed two big hit movies this Diwali, Shah Rukh Khan's "Happy New Year" and Vijay's "Kaththi", which have ruled the box office.
While the Hindi movie is inching towards the 355 crore mark, the Kollywood movie is heading towards grossing 110 crores worldwide.
The success of both "Happy New Year" and "Kaththi" has made people measure the success considering a few factors and leaving aside the total collection made by the films till date.
On closely looking at the markets and the collections, one would easily declare that it is 110 crore grosser "Kaththi", which is a bigger hit than 355 crore grosser "Happy New Year" at the box office.
The first and foremost reason is the fact that Bollywood has a global market comprising South Asian nations, the US, the UK, Australia and France. It gets released in African countries too. Even then, "Happy New Year" is reaching 355 crore mark worldwide and is struggling to reach 200 crore in India.
On the other end, apart from South Indian states, Tamil films do well only in Malaysia, Singapore, the UK and the US. On an average, an A-list Bollywood actor's movie contributes 45% of collection from the overseas. But for Kollywood, it is only 25%.
One has to note that the market of Bollywood has now expanded to 500 crore by Aamir Khan's "Dhoom 3", which made 355 crore in India alone. Going by this factor, the success of "Happy New Year" is far lesser than the Bollywood standards. Whereas, in the history of Kollywood, only four movies have crossed 100 crore mark and "Kaththi" is one among them.
For Kollywood, Rajinikanth's "Enthiran" remains the highest grossing movie with 150 crore for the Tamil version and the success of "Kaththi" is no less than a big achievement.
Huge Promotions
If the above reasons do not justify the argument, "Happy New Year" was promoted in every nook and corner of India and the world. But "Kaththi" had low-key promotions.
Apart from a few press meets, Vijay's film unit was not seen anywhere. Though Shah Rukh's efforts were higher, the returns are lesser. But for Vijay, it is a little effort and best results.

For all movies same twitter handles, BO analysts and websites update the numbers right? Then why foul cry here saying numbers are fake rather than proving the star power with numbers in past and future?
Cedy nice consolidation. Vishwaroopam would have done wonders if it got released without problem. Surprised with thalaiva counts
Seriously  I can smell conspiracy here...
Gross collection of Billa 2 is more than the Blockbuster of the year, Nanban by 7L approximately. Billa 2 managed to get this gross in 5 weeks time whereas Nanban took 7 weeks :smokesmirk:
'King of Box Office' tag looks like a conspiracy now, doesnt it? Man, you deserve a special appreciation for keeping the Billa 2 numbers. :notworthy:
Look at the number of opening shows of Billa 2 - 927 shows in 3 days :notworthy:
Arrambam's first weekend consists of 903 shows whereas the 100Cr blockbuster had only 704 shows. :2thumbsup:
More number of shows in less number of days means more number of people watching and faster ROI...
Let we calculate the Collection per Day using the formula 1st Week Gross / Number of days(1st week)
Thuppakki - 1st Week Gross Rs. 4,83,60,315 / 6 days = Rs. 80,60,052.333 per day
Billa 2 - 1st Week Gross Rs. 2,79,30,353 / 3 days = Rs. 93,10,117.667 per day 8-) 100cr Blockbuster could not match Billa 2's opening numbers. :shoot: :smokesmirk:
Arrambam - 1st Week Gross Rs. 4,39,87,897/ 4 days = Rs. 1,09,96,974.25 per day :notworthy:
Note that for Mankatha, Collection over weekend only given. Total collection for the five days is not available in BW.
If weekend is considered as 3 days then, Weekend Gross Rs. 1,79,35,278 / 3 days = Rs. 59,78,426 per day
You cannot take credit away from AJITH and his fans for few things and this tag 'King of Opening' is one among them. And thanks for the stats.
I think the difference is SOLO release .......:banghead:

Thanks Arul for the beautiful highlight :2thumbsup:
hmm....solo release? so what's the big deal? Kaththi release? do you agree that Kaththi had competition from Puratchi/Puthiya Thalapathy Poojai?
Guess people forgot Varalaaru? Varalaaru was released as one of the 5 films that got released in the year 2006. And Varalaaru went on to become one of biggest grosses of the year 2006.
And Varalaaru had more than 100% occupancy for that matter!! :) Aren't you surprised?
"I am waiting" for #YennaiArindhaal :)
1. KATHTHI
Ranking based on Chennai Box Office Collections from Nov 03rd 2014 to Nov 09th 2014

Verdict:Blockbuster

The big-budgeted Kaththi gets the Blockbuster tag by the sheer weight of its collections. It is holding on pretty well even after the new releases.

Nanban was SOLO 2 days Prior to Vettai...But Shankar film+Vijay What happened???? Did it set any records..Please answer itQuote:
I think the difference is SOLO release .......:banghead:
Thuppaki and Kathi both were *HOLIDAY* releases + Festival Crowd ++Vija+ ARMurugadoss ..Again Festival days Pongal/Diwali day bring about 20% more crowd than usual day in TN
...So when you have these Privileges of Festive Holiday You shouldn't be worrying about Solo in Workin day....Logic of whinning over SOLO is void.Period
For People saying Poda Podi which released in 200+ screens and Poojai with Vishal in approx 300 Screens is Great competitor Given form of Those actors...Cant help you
In Bollywood they follow seperate Top Ten for Weekday Releases/Holiday releases. Before Blaming SOLO think of these...
Mankatha released in Holiday 3 years back we setted next to Endiran TN opening in 370 screens.Sad thing only after this Vijay fans whenever they sleep the got infected with SOLOPhobia...Before that Any guy had this NO...
Expected reply... SOLO release illa brother Saturated Release.. Ajith's Billa was the first movie to go for saturated release among his generation of actors. Trade was very confident that Ajith can pull the crowd and it was proved. Distributors do this for the Stars whose movie release is celebrated as a festival. They don't need a festival weekend to get the grand opening. Release it on any day, rest take care by the Star's opening power. Ajith movies consistently enjoying this saturated release next to Rajini and Kamal. It gives the flexibility to the producer to release the movie on any day when the movie is completed. They do not need to wait for a holiday or festival period.
Film may refer someone Ghilli But Trade has Refferred always Thala as Ghilli ..
Guess this was written By SreedharPillai when he was in Sify

The Gilli of Kollywood!

Among the Diwali releases, only Ajit’s Varalaaru will be profitable for its distributors and theatres who paid Minimum Guarantee (MG). It clearly indicates the Ajit power at the box-office, as most of them have been able to recover their investment in the first week itself!
The first three days collection of Varalaaru proves that Ajit is the best opener in Tamil cinema after Rajnikanth. In cricketing terms, he is the ‘Gilli’ of Kollywood, like the Australian wicket keeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist, considered to be the best opener in one-day cricket.
Gilli, as he is popularly known plunders maximum number of runs in the less number of balls, giving his team a great start. Similarly Ajit films attack the box-office and plunder huge openings in least number of days, making the road to profitability faster for its buyers.
An Ajit film normally turns profitable in the first week of release and how big hit it is depends on the content of the film. This strategy has worked to his advantage this year with Paramasivam and Varalaaru but backfired with Tirupati where the content was bad.
Now all eyes are on Ajit’s Pongal 2007 release Aalwar where he is pitted against arch-rivals Vijay’s Pokiri and Vikram’s Bheema.
Ajit has almost completed the entire shoot of Aalwar and will move on to Suresh Balaji’s Kireedom by December. Now all top banners want his dates and the rumour is that he has signed a film for producer A.M.Ratnam.
The best thing that happened to Ajit is that he has been able to get away from the clutches of Nic Arts Chakravarthy and his gang. Now the actor takes his own decisions regarding his career which augers well for him.
Anyway thanks for reminding Varalaaru here....Mind you this was When he was down..Lowest phase of his career...Still Full form Batsmen couldn't get this strike rate at that time...they need suitable weather/Pitch to set
and Pity on someone whinniing on SOLO
Nanban was a pure remake movie even if it's a Shankar's direction. He himself told before the movie releases this Nanban will be a pure remake and I am not gona spoil the original. Yet 3 idiots watched already by most of the tamil audience but still Nanban did a tremendous collection all over the world including my country Srilanka.
Yup. Ajith does not need any other factor apart from himself. Varalaaru made history. Then what made Aalwar his immediate next release such a damp squib? And Vijay's release before Pokkiri was Aadhi and so he was not on fire exactly at that time.
Pokkiri (previous release Aadhi) vs Aalwar (previous release Varalaaru)
Ok. the content of Aalwar was weak and it lost. But I do not remember it even getting a great opening. Guess Thamirabharani did better. For someone who does not rely on anything apart from himself may I know the reason for this debacle?
In my view , Distributors are not ready to take risk by releasing any Ajith movie with any other movie due to no scope for longer run.....
After Rajini its vijay who had/has more family and kids audience which helps in longer run of the movie. Vijay lost a bit in middle where surya gained some control. Now Vijay IMO has gained complete control. The final counts of his recent hits in BO says it all :)

#Kaththi Total Australia box-office after 3rd weekend A$193,846 [1.03 Cr]!!
Nawaaz and Movie Buff...
We did not deny Alwar was a disaster in BO and opening. Even King looses some wars. But Asal and Aegan took a good opening irrespective of the mixed reviews(links given below). Most of us accept Ajith has given the highest number of flops, but still he enjoys a very good fan base. With that he is capable of giving good opening most of the times.
Aegan CBO

Asal CBO

Billa 2 was 2 hours so high number of shows.. OK... Even Arrambam had 900+ shows in the first four days. If there is a list of all top league actors movies and its selling price, we can discuss that too.
See all, this conversation started when people here claim 'King of Opening' is a conspiracy based on the Behindwoods data. Just I countered that. It was the title given by the trade.
Arul, Despite flops Ajith manages good opening is really wonderful. No arguments on that.
Also have to agree vijay/Rajini and even surya now has cushion of longer run because of family audience support though reviews are bad which Ajith lacks. Example would be mankatha which took tremendous opening but didnt have longer run (May be theme of movie would have not interested family/kid audiences. Not sure)
Theaters in TN can manage say 1000shows/day. If its solo release , movie can manage 900 odd shows.
If its festive release, eg: Kaththi vs Poojai theaters can manage 700 + 300 shows right? Does it look a valid point?
Regarding opening, i think 1st 2 days if not 2 , first day purely depends on star power and wide release. So there is no point of review here . Agreed?
Unfortunately Aalwar (Worst of Ajith) has to release with Vijays Pokiri.
Thamarabarani?? opened better than Aalwar..Seriously no...
Udhaya came after Thirumalai???What kinda opening it got?? Pudiya geethai too got lesser opening Again There are certain exceptions ..this is such case for Ajith....
