On location of Sakkara Katti at the sprawling Film City campus, you feel as if you have stepped into a college.
Dozens of smart young girls, dressed in casual skirts, jeans and tiniest of t-shirts hang around in groups, while a group of guys dressed in fawn coloured leggins and tops look as if they are part of the college cricket team.
However, when hero Shantanu, son of Poornima and Bhagiaraj, strolls over the cricket bats are put away, passions cool down. The boys and girls, who are the group dancers in the song sequence turn thoroughly professional, rehearsing the steps one last time before the camera starts rolling. The song Jhalak jhalak un nenjil is being picturised on Shantanu and Ishita Sharma.
Director Kala Prabhu goes over the scene with his assistants, who are totting a couple of writing pads, while Ishita, one of the two heroines of the film charms everyone with a huge smile that never quite leaves her face.
The Mumbai girl is debuting in a Tamil film and we give the director a hard time as to why he chose her. ‘‘Her skin tone,’’ he says, looking sheepish like someone caught while giving proxy for his friend.
Prabhu has taken a round-about route to his dream job, since his father producer Kalaipuli Thanu was not all that keen on films being a family business. Prabhu, who worked in Pentamedia as a graphics artiste, cut a couple of music albums and made it clear to his dad that showbiz was in his blood. And, when the youthful love story came along his way, Prabhu was able to convince his father to let him direct the movie.
The film is almost complete and only a couple of songs are pending. Shot in Chennai and Bangalore, the film is likely to release soon. Music is by A R Rahman.
