The screen on a Macbook Pro is about the best you can get in a non-specialist laptop. It's glossy, but it seems to be next to impossible to get a non-glossy screen anywhere nowadays. The speakers are OK - not bad for a laptop. Also, though they're expensive they last a long while - you'll get at least five years life out of it, and more if you treat it well, so it's good value for money in terms of longevity. Of course, I get about an academic discount which lops around a quarter off the price - that makes them much more affordable (and OS X 10.6 supports the anjal system for typing phonetically in Tamil out of the box).

I agree, sadly. My first personal laptop was an HP Omnibook XE2, which I bought in 1999 after leaving the world of work to go back to Uni for a Ph.D. (and having to hand back my corporate laptop). For its day, it was a fabulous machine with neat little touches like a separate power circuit to the CD player, so you could pop a CD in and listen to it without even turning the computer on. The speakers were as good as medium-range desktop speakers, and the laptop lasted over ten years - until two weeks ago, as a matter of fact, when the CMOS battery finally gave up the ghost and shorted the mainboard. Their current line of laptops are a very, very far cry from that sort of quality.

The first computer I used had 32KB memory ! :) That is right! Thirtytwo kilobytes! It was CDC3400. The company is defunct.

The next one was no better. IBM7090/7094 !

The third was IBM360 model 40 or 60! :) It had 64KB. I was up in the clouds!

Now, you talk about GB very casually? How lucky?

Not many Dell fans here.

But as a long time customer, I feel it's about the best deal. It's a bit bulky but pretty effective. I hold Studio 15

Display is okay. But good for 15.6 screen.

For video editing, it's slightly slower and dragging than Mac. But still just about functional.

I'm able to play games like GTA 4, FIFA 2010, etc without much problems. Core 1.3 Intel + 4 GB ram + 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470.

Blu Ray playback is perfect.

I am planning to buy a lappy.. please suggest a brand..

my suggestion is acer aspire 4740 or 5750. price is around 30K.

if u are ok for some 38K go for acer timeline series. slim laptop with 8 hrs battery time.

or else u dont want a windows laptop, go for some eMachines model( this is also from acer) which comes with linux

i have no idea abt other brands but i am sure acer has good hardware stability. it wont take u to service station and optimum performance is gauranteed

Dinesh, I saw an Acer center near chromepet as well. I guess they have Acer Malls in Chennai.

:lol: (no offence meant to you, this is typical Indian mindset, I also had this mindset years back, that, all products will have problems and need technicians close at hand)

Please buy something that won't need service, at least for a few years:-)

If there're any mfg issues, that should show up within a couple of months and your contract should make it possible to return the machine and get money back. The level of automation in manufacturing processes is in such a state -i.e. right from processing the raw materials for basic components to assemblies to final product - that one should no longer look at "repairing" electronics anymore :-)

Just to adjust the perspective, will you think of repairing an IC? We should think the same way about the final product as well, in this case, a laptop:-)

i am not talking about ic failures and stuffs.. but there have been cases where, the keys from the system would get damaged or not work properly(my friends dell laptop had this problem in 3 months from purchase).. so in that case we cant repair it ourselfs.. we need to go to an authorized dealer otherwise the warranty is void.. he contacted the shop where he bought it.. they said that, the service center is not available in chennai and he has to mail it to US :shock: to get it repaired..
