`Thalai` triumphs!
Last Updated: Mon, Oct 23, 2006 05:29 hrs
Sify.com had coined the title ‘King of opening” to the ultimate star Ajith and the actor has once again lived up to his reputation with Varalaaru. The film has taken the best ever opening in Tamilnadu at the Diwali box-office. (seepic: A fan offeringPaalabhishekam on Ajit hoarding)
Varalaaru has taken an extraordinary opening all over Tamilnadu and overseas. In Chennai city and Chengalpet area on the opening Diwali Day, Varalaaru has taken 110 percent opening! The extra 10 percent comes from Ajit fans who watched the film standing and sitting on theatres floors in Chengalpet area!
Says ‘Oscar’ Ravichandran, who is distributing the film in North& South Arcot and Tiruchi area: “Varalaaru is the clear Diwali winner by a mile. It is going to be a milestone in Ajit’s career. The film has not only taken a bumper opening but is all set to be a super hit”.
Added Balasubramaniam of Baba Films, who are distributing the film in Kovai area: “Varalaaru has created a new box-office record in Coimbatore city by collecting a net of Rs 20. 5 Lakhs from four prints in two days”.
If we must not believe Sify news (the Sify website which is favorite of who-you-know) then we must not believe any other news too!! right?

Ajit cuts Simbu to size!
Last Updated: Sat, Nov 04, 2006 06:40 hrs
Before the release of Vallavan and Varalaaru , Simbu had told his close friends that he is getting two huge screens on Mount Road, Chennai- Devi and Sathyam big screen with combined seating capacity of over 2500 seats to screen his film.
Simbu wanted to prove that he is one-up on Ajit by saying that his film will take a better opening than Varalaaru. The trade however played it cool and never bothered to reply as they thought that it was “immature talk”!
Sathyam cinemas later played neutral as they gave two shows each for Ajit and Simbu at big screen and two shows at small Sree theatre. A peeved Simbu said that his film will replace ‘Thalai’ and he will get four shows at big Sathyam in two weeks.
But now (from Nov 3) the big news is that Varalaaru has grabbed all the four shows at the big screen while Vallavan has been shifted to the smaller screen!
The moral of the story- “Never count your chickens before they are hatched”.
Chimpu is nothing in front of Thala but got to mention this. Those Chimpu had a better market than some of the other heroes in the field (leave the top heroes).....but a movie like Varalaaru which was in the making for a long time, people had lost interest or moved on (yes, Ajith moved on to his next and wasn't sure of if the movie will release), for its production values etc etc....it cut chimpu to pieces... But Kaththi couldn't do the same for Poojai....right?
Thala Ajith was a record creator long time back...it is only now we are hearing some records being created by some actors...also please note no one article has mentioned anything about Ajith in those new records being created cause they very well know about the future movie of Ajith waiting to be released only to break or erase records... :)
Leo sir, Better know the facts than blaming others.
Biggest BB mankatha got sold for 20C and I think billa 2 got sold around 24C
Hope your mates can help you. Let me quit from your rotfl stuffs
'Billa 2' has made a record among Ajith movies, for its distribution rights for Tamil Nadu have been sold for a whopping Rs 24 crore! V Ravichandran of Aascar Films has bagged the rights from the original producers In Entertainment.
"The theatrical rights from Tamil Nadu have been sold to Ravichandran. Distribution rights for other areas have also been sold, except Kerala. We will make it soon," says Sunir Kheterpal, who heads In Entertainment.
Music for 'Billa 2', composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, will be released on May 1, the birthday of the 'Thala'. This will be followed by aggressive promotions to back the movie's release scheduled for June.
Directed by Chakri Toleti of 'Unnaipol Oruvan' fame, this prequel to 'Billa' has Parvathy Omanakuttan as the heroine and Bruna Abdullah as second female lead. RD Rajasekhar has wielded the camera, while foreign stunt masters were roped in to choreograph action scenes.
Billa-2 distribution rights were sold for less than expected price
We had earlier reported that Billa-2 rights may be possibly sold for record price given Mankatha's reception. Contrary to the belief, the news was confirmed that Aascar production has bought the Tamil Nadu theatrical rights at less than expected levels. This has surprised a number of industry people how Aascar was able to grab the rights for just 26 Crores for entire Tamil Nadu. Here are the unofficial numbers quoted by various distribution network sources,
Tamil Nadu - Rs. 26 Crores (Rs. 24.11 Crores + Rs. 2 crores for marketing)
Satellite Rights - Rs.7 Crores
Overseas - Rs. 5.5 Cores
Andhra Pradesh - estimated Rs. 2 Crores (SVR Media) (updated)
Karnataka - Rs. 2 Crores
Kerala - not sold yet (estimated at 1 Crore)
North India - Own release
The production cost is estimated around Rs. 40 Crores to Rs. 45 Crores. The distribution rights barely add up to Rs. 50 Crores giving a slender profit (relative to the size of the investment). In comparative terms, the distribution rights are below or in par with Mankatha levels. The challenge quoted by one of the distributor sources is because Ajith is the only saleable name associated with Billa-2 followed by Yuvan at a distant next. Other than these two members, no other star cast, director or crew members have enough track record in Tamil to pull an opening crowd on their own merit.
The good news is that even if the movie happens to make Rs. 50 Crore or more from TN theatricals, it will be quickly termed a Hit/Super Hit due to lower level of investments.
I am out of this topic. Leosimha dude, get things clarified before coming in for discussion
Sharif...business is done based on the budget....you are talking few years back....and you are talking as if you have sold it for 20C for Mankatha...etc etc....we don't have any real picture for the budget of the movies and it is all just speculations as per the news and also the business is not known that openly as the movie product is only made public but the business is only left to the people to speculate, talk and have imaginations....
I am talking about today's movie which will be released....and you are still stuck in 2010 time frame....4 years have passed since...and Ajith's Thala55 YennaiArindhaal movie is speculated to be around 60C...
And you news as you have put in bolded letters...it is a record business...do you expect it to be sold for 100C...it can happen only if you are cinema trader and who would spend 100C to buy Kaththi and make a few Crores profit if Kaththi has indeed grossed more than 100C again here it is the gross and not the net...guess you will end up being a profitable one for VJ, ARM, Lyca etc etc  :rotfl:
Sharif...FYKI Billa-2 is a low budget movie...it has been marketed only on Ajith's market value...there is no other known face/technicians to command huge salary to push up the budget.... :) :rotfl:
Vijay had minimum guarantee and chennai distribution rights in past. After Rajini, only vijay had it to my knowledge. Now I think he has only minimum guarantee and doesn't have chennai distribution rights. Let some hardcore vijay fan confirm on it. Why Ajith never had these in his life time? Leosimha your making me look like ajith hater and vijay supporter here which I dont want to continue
As i said, better get things clarified from your folks please :)
Vijay had MG? :rotfl: oh for his kuthu numbers,....he had MG..yes...true.... ;)
Ajith never had MG? wow...what a statement...discovery....now you talk like Ajith's PRO :)
Forget about me being Ajith fan or not a fan or VJ supporter or hater....but get your facts right here before acting like a joker who goes on to joke as if he is the business cinema trader and talks about MG for actor VJ only having it.... :)
A business cinema trader relies on IndiaGlitz and Moviecrow information... :rotfl:
sharif...there is no point in just talking to you...as it is clearly known....who-you-know-you-are.... :)
Thanks for the time leo sir. I am completely wrong. Apologies. Go ahead with decorating the thread with rotfl
Simha,
Needless to say, going by the numbers of 1st day TN collection tweeted by Sreedhar pillai..:cool2:
KATHTHI - 12.5 Cr
Thuppaki - 9.25 Cr
Aarambam - 8.75 Cr
Billa 2 - 7.6 Cr
Billa 2 also had the Billa tag
Argument eh athu thaanea...
IMO, the most important factor for a long run is the content(with the theme) than the family audience. If family audience is the only key for long run then why some recent 100days movies did not collect the huge gross? On the Mankatha part, like you said the theme did not target kids/family audience.Quote:
Also have to agree vijay/Rajini and even surya now has cushion of longer run because of family audience support though reviews are bad which Ajith lacks. Example would be mankatha which took tremendous opening but didnt have longer run (May be theme of movie would have not interested family/kid audiences. Not sure)
Agreed. Arrambam too had a festive release. It released along with Pandiyanaadu and All in Alagu Raja.Quote:
Theaters in TN can manage say 1000shows/day. If its solo release , movie can manage 900 odd shows.
If its festive release, eg: Kaththi vs Poojai theaters can manage 700 + 300 shows right? Does it look a valid point?
[/QUOTE]Quote:
Regarding opening, i think 1st 2 days if not 2 , first day purely depends on star power and wide release. So there is no point of review here . Agreed?
I would say first 3 days and the wide release is directly proportional to star power.
Going back to the analysis on Gross per show, it should not be considered as a performance indicator unless all compared shows had equal number of seats and ticket price. Mayajaal has a seating capacity of 150-200 for each screen whereas the Satyam and Devi main screens can accomodate over 1K. Revenue generate from Mayajaal per show will be lesser than the revenue generated by other theaters. When gross per show is derived on number of shows, if there are many shows in smaller screens then it will take a hit.
Movies like Billa, Arrambam had many shows in Mayajaal. Because of this Gross per Show has come out less.
Let we see an example..
If we take full capacity of a Mayajaal show as 200, then Rs.24000 is the revenue per show(considering the ticket cost as 120). If it is Satyam then the amount is Rs.120000 (1000seats*120).
Total amount earned (1 Satyam Show + 1 Mayajal show) : Rs. 144000
Total Shows (1 Satyam Show + 1 Mayajal show) : 2
Gross per show : Rs. 122000
Consider a FDFS scenario where Mayajaal had 5 shows, total amount for 10 shows is (5*24000 = 12000) and Satyam had 1 show
Total amount earned(1 Satyam show + 5 Mayajaal shows) : Rs. 240000
Total shows(1 Satyam show + 5 Mayajaal shows) : 6
Gross per show : Rs. 40000
If it is other way around, Satyam had 5 shows and Mayajaal has 1 show, then take a look at the equation
Satyam (5*120000=600000) and Mayajaal (1*24000=24000)
Total amount earned(5 Satyam shows + 1 Mayajaal show) : Rs. 624000
Total shows(5 Satyam shows + 1 Mayajaal show) : 6
Gross per show : Rs. 104000
See the difference it can make.. for same number of shows, two extremely different gross per show numbers..
Edit Note : Added the above line
Gross per show cannot be taken as a yardstick unless the movies taken for comparison were released in the same set of screens.
Wonderful arguments going on.... :)
Arul Anna
The first time I saw this "King Of Opening" used for Ajith was around the time Ji got released.I saw that in a Hindu article..He was in poor form, surrounded by flops and controversies at that time..why would someone call him KOP during that time??
The way I look at that tag is Ajith gets an opening because of him irrespective of the cast, crew etc most of the times..If he teams up with say a Shankar, do you guys think the opening will be anything like Nanban?
Leo.. ithulaam perumaiya.. Illa Kadamai.. :P
Again you are Wrong Dude
Billa after 30% Tax its 7.6C so Gross would be 10.9 So only KAthi beat that...
Arambam on Non Holiday Two days Prior to Diwali is 8.75..
Kathi,Thupaki,Arrambam are tax free so net equals to Gross as per Sreedhar Pillai
Right Equation would be
Endiran-11.5+
Mankatha - 7.7C(Pillai reported 6.5C with 15% Tax)
Billa2-10.9
Thupakki - 9.25
Arrambam-8.75
Kathi-12.5
Out of these Mankatha,Kathi & Thupaki were on Holiday...Stop worrying about SOLOs dude When You have Holiday/Festivals ....:-D
Even before these Social media things Trade has named Ajith as Best opener after Rajini.
I think the term 'King Of opening' was bestowed upon Ajith given the fact his movies open well irrespective of the content and longevity of the movies' running streak. I think it is not in the sense that his opening is better than others. If that is the case then ideally Rajni should be the king of opening right?
We should stop these discussions about Ajith being the King of Opening...the actual "Ghilli" of Kollywood...etc etc....it doesn't do us any good either them....
they are ever ready to post the gross collections of VJ vs net collections of Ajith.....there will be a day when the net collections of Ajith's movie will beat the gross collections of VJ's movie...and these will be reported in the media too..."I am waiting" for that day.. :)
This debate/conversation is going nowhere.
Arul buddy...given my experience with data analytics, I think there are some loopholes and gaps in your rationale and logic, however, I think we should just end this Vijay vs Ajith oneupmanship battle here.
As far as I am concerned, today all 3 stars (I am obviously leaving Rajini and Kamal out of the equation here) namely, Vijay, Ajith and Suriya have made a mark for themselves in such a way that the first 2 to 3 days will attract crowds, no matter what. Yes, Suriya probably doesn't enjoy the loyal fanbase that Vijay and Ajith do but he does attract crowds to the theaters. So I personally feel all 3 are capable of giving a solid opening during first weekend.
Let's also accept the fact that just the opening isn't enough to keep trade and others happy. The real victory of the movie is not based on how big the opening was but on how the Monday after the first weekend sustains the collections.
I think we should just end this debate here and move on. I say this because...how much ever data and facts are thrown from either sides...there will always be an unpleasant negative counter from the other side when it comes to Ajith vs Vijay debates.
So best is that we all agree to disagree and not make this an unpleasant forum for others.
If you all still wana continue.. I leave it to you.
DammyR, today the top 3 stars you are referring to.....all have family audience...
But to me personally I feel VJ and Surya have got a good following from the Children and Girls....
and Ajith stands apart from these 2 actors...who have got a very good following from A, B and C centres.....have a great following from the ladies population base too...and if you are taking other state...VJ is known only in Kerala...but Ajith and Surya are well known in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra, Telangana, Northern states alike...and Vikram does have a presence in Andhra and Northern states...
Totally disagree Leo. Don't wana comment about Ajith...but the only market where Vijay doesn't have a presence is AP/Telangana...Vijay is popular in Karnataka, Mumbai etc. And he is also a very good draw overseas as we all know.
As I said, we will all have relative views about our favourites. No point debating it as it will have a lot of bias.
The way I think about it is...if a movie is a genuine blockbuster or a 100cr or whatever. .it will get referred to as one even a year or 2 years after release. Let's just leave it at that.
Just so you know- You are contradicting your own statement. during the Opening day no body cares about the Movie's content but sheer start power pulls crowd to the theater, That said Ajith's movies have 110% Occupancy that is the reason he is the King of Opening.
