This song I think from BALAE PAANDIYAA is one of my fav songs ... Actually my Mom's fav song ... She used to keep listening to and singin this song all the time .. When I saw this song recently, I was really impressed with the picturisation ... So Sivaji is trying to commit suicide, and he jumps into a pond of water ... And unfortunately for him, there is not much water in that pond, and he doesnt die ... He's sooo frustrated with himself ... And there comes Devika singing this song for him to ENCOURAGE him ... Aah, when I get bad grades, I listen to this song, and sure it cheers me up !!! :P :thumbsup:

welcome murali,lakshmi, anything to do with NT, I will be ready willing and able....I recall the "thangapathakkam" drama and boy what a performance.this drama was inaugurated in mumbai and NT had no time for rehearsals so he had his troupe do the rehearsal and got them all to travel by train.He was booked in first class, but got in with the rest of the troupe and had mahendran(the writer-later director) read the play - his part, while the others played their parts.one reading was over, they broke for lunch and siesta, that evening again NT came from his compartment,got mahendran to read the play again...broke for dinner..slept.Next day when he entered mahendran took out the script to read when he said .."vendam,rehearsal pakkalam" and proceeded to say all his lines....without any error.they reached mumbai, went to shanmukhananda hall had one full rehearsal and launched the play.......avanthayya nadigan...nangellam verumna makeuppa poosikittu camera munnaley nikkarom. :oops: (orumayil avarai urimayil azhaiththaen)

Before doing serious discussion again on NT, let me add what I left out in my first post. While discussing about NT's 2 movies release on the same day and it's success, I forgot to add one more instance. That was in 1975, when both Dr.Siva & Vaira Nenjam got released on the Deepavali day, but they didn't do well. Though the two films ( out of which Vaira Nenjam started in 1973 as Hero-72 and later had a change of name) were not that good, I still feel the political uncertaintity that surrounded NT and his fans in the wake of Kamaraj's death was the main reason for the films' poor show. Another film in that period (1975 dec) which suffered because of the above problem was Pattum Bharathum

While talking on the same subject, I had said no other actor had achieved what NT did. But one actor had 100 days run of 2 movies released on the same day.He is none other than Ilaiya Thilakam Prabu. His success was like this

1986- Deepavali - Aruvadai Naal & Palaivana Roajakkal - both 100

1988-Deepavali- Poovizhi Raja & Kaliyugam -both 100 days

First song " Ooonjalukku Poochooti" -yil NT appadi oru style cheyvar. Outdoor song. Avar nadai, sollavae vendam. Anal rasikarkal kathirupparkal. Moonravathu saranam arambibar

Mohanram sir was telling about Thangapathakkam and it's stage arangetram. While the play was filmed, slight changes were made in the screenplay like introducing the second Cho (Vyapuri alias Vaigai Valavan) and bringing in the portions of SP Choudry's younger days. The song "Thathi sellum muthu kannan sirippu" a VJ-Saibaba beauty were all blended nicely. Mahendran had penned some sharp but superb dialogues in that movie. A dialogue which i like in the earlier scenes was when NT comes home late,he wil find his son asleep. He will ask KRV " Lakshmi, Jegan thoongitana"
KRV will reply" Ithanai neram appa enga,appa engainu kettutitu ippothan thoonginan" NT will lift his son and put him on his shoulders and start "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star--" On seeing this KRV will say " Neengalae office-ilirunthu tired-a vanthreekinga, en kastapadareenga?'' NT will say "Nee pathu masam sumanthirikeyae,naan 10 secondavathu sumakaranae" enbar.Appothu avar mukathil theriyum antha paasam, etthanai thadavai paarthalum salikkathu.
Intha postil naan solla vanthathu, KRV death scene. They would have done it differently in the Drama. Mahendran wanted to cut short on the dialogue front and whatever little is written should be effective.Bur director P.Madhavan had his doubts and he was more doubtful whether NT will accept the change. But Mahebdran wanted to try. Everyday when the shooting gets over,NT will call Madhavan & Mahendran and discuss about the next day's scenes.He was particular about this scene and asked Mahi whether he is ready with the dialogue. Mahi said that it will be ready by the morning. The next morning NT came and and his eyes searched for Mahi,but he was not to be seen.He went in,put on his makeup and waited.Now somebody needed to tell NT that Mahi had attempted something diferent and there were no volunteers.Atlast one person mustered courage(I don't remember his name) and told NT that the dialogue is like this. NT just heard what was said and went to the floor. The camera started rolling.

NT will walk in with his full uniform and while climbing the staircase,will remove his shirt, will walk into the room where the body will be lying.On seeing him,Pramila will get up and say Mama and start crying. NT will silently stand near the body for some time
Then in a soft tone will start
" Laksmi,naan daily late-a varuven.Nee enakkaga thoongama muzhichitu irrupae.Innikku naan seekiramae vanduten ana nee thoongi poyitayae, ezunthiruma,ennai paaruma "
Suddenly breaking down he will raise his voice " Ennalae thanga mudiyalayae Lakshmi,ennalae thanga mudiyalayae" and will fall on her body weeping. Madhavan,Mahendran and all others in the set were so much engrossed with his acting, director failed to say cut and tears were roling down their cheeks.
Avargalukku mattumthana, antha scenai theatril paartha ellorum appadithan feel panninarkal.

As you had said, I always watched NT's movies very keenly and will always look for nuances. While arguing with people who will question about the greatnees of NT( Nowadays I do it more with the younger generation) I used to describe scenes like I have done in my post.There have been quite a no of people who had asked me "Ivvalavu deep-a,unnippava padam parpeenga?"

I will tell them that cinema is not just for viewing.You should get into it and observe. I also used to tell them " 2000-2006-il nindru kondu 60's and 70's -il vanda padangalai athvum TV-il paarthuvittu Sivaji sariyillai endru sollathirkal" enbaen.

The technological advancements in cinema had made them talk like this, but no matter how big it grows still Sivaji is bigger than anything else.

A NT- Bhimsingh combo movie that is not much talked about is Paar Magalae Paar. Ofcourse it was a successful 100 days movie and NT's action was praised,but somehow people doesn't remember it in the first instance. For me this movie was a totally different experience. A movie adapted from stage play, NT was something different in this when compared to the movies of that period.
Imagine a aristocratic,egoistic rich man with the Gouravam and anthasthu thrown in proper measure, you will get the character NT depicted. Right from the start,just like Avanthan Manithan, you can see his styles flourish.

The scene in which he puts up a Raja Nadai when he comes to see his new born children in the hospital, he will be in a hurry,but at the same time his gait will not change.

Then "Neerodum Vaigaiyile" song wherin the cigarate smoking itself would be presented in gorgeous style and the spin of his fingers to throw it away when the famous lines come
" Naan Kathalenum Kavithai Sonnen Kattilin Melae" standing perpendicular to the camera when you can see his right eye just slightly turning and indicating the children for which Sowcar will reply " andha Karunaikku Naan Parisu Thanthen Thotilin Melae"
( MSV- TKR/KD).
When the children grow up, he becomes more rich and cigarate becomes pipe. When Muthuraman brings in Vijayakumari to the house after taking her to a hospital for burns suffered in college lab, VK will introduce him to NT and he will simply say " Hello young man'' and will ask VK to go in. Then he will ask " enga veedu" for which MR will say " Mela Masi Veedhi" (Story set in Madurai).
NT "Mela Masi Veedhiya? Appa peru?
MR " Ramalingam, ana appa ippo illai,naanum ammavum matumthan"
NT" entha Ramalingam,accident-iliranthu ponarae,avara?"

Till this time NT speaking on a matter of fact tone will turn and say"Dei Thambikku coffee kondu vaa'' enbar. With that single gesture he will establish the character in the minds of the audience.

What I mean to say that it was different in the sense that NT will be very casual in dialogue,mannerism and body language.
This casualness can be seen when he will ask "enna moonu perum rail vidureenga" pointing out to the Thalai pinnal (Sowcar doing to VK and VK doing it to Puspalatha).This is the scene where he will come and ask them to get ready for going to a cinema and at the end of the scene when everybody says that they are not coming,he will say " appo yaarum cinema poga vendam, ellorum velaiyai paarunga,ippo en pinnalae rail vidunga" a refreshing approach. Having come to know that one of his daughters is not his, his ego bruised but will still be the same.When VK in order to save the family takes the blame and leaves the home he will take it lightly and ask his servant (A.Karunanidhi) to remove her photo and break it. He will go to MR's house and will casually say that Chandra's (VK) chapter is closed. MR's mother (Rukmani-mother of Lakshmi) will casually ask " Kantha (PL) eppadi irukka" for which NT will say" avalum varaenu than sonnae, anal naan than andha veetukku nee satharanama pokakoodathu,melathalathudan than ponaminu solliten" enbar. Rukmani " puiyaliyae" endru solla,udanae NT romba casual-a "ithilae puriyarthukku enna irrukku? unga veetilae naanga sambandam pannanaminu ninachom.ana sila vishyangal nadanthu pochu.Ippo kanthavai sekarukku kodukkalaminu ninaikiraen" enbar. Rukmani "ethkkum Sekarai ketkama" ? Udanae NT oru Ponnu veetukaran mathirayae illama " avar enna matten=na solla porar? oru nalla nalla parthu nammuda veetukku vaanga" endru sollivittu (he will literally command and how majestic he will look) selvar.
Even in the unforgettable song "Aval Paranthu Ponalae" , Bhimsingh would have used NT's portion in the song in different angles. Just like "Kannin mani pole--" in Paasa Malar, where his eyes would be closeup-ed, here also NT's eyes will have a closeup for " aval enakka magalanal ---" , which will spontaneously bring in the applause in the theatre.
Coming back to my experience, I saw the movie 15 yrs after it's release( I was too small a kid when the movie was released in 1963) during my colege days. I saw the movie in my native Madurai-Sri Devi Talkies and if my memory serves me right it was in Oct 1978. We friends(read hardcore NT fans) went to the movie without any expectations but we were simply bowled over. After seeing it on Friday evening, we again went on sunday evening and again on Wednesday evening. Such was the impact of the movie on us. Now comes the twist.
In that year (1978) Deepavali happened on Oct 30th Monday and our NT was coming out with "Pilot Premnath". a Lankan- Indian co-production directed by ACT, we were just waiting for it. Also add to it that Oct 30th happens to be the B'day of my close friend, it was party time and what better way to celebrate than to see the movie, we were there in the theatre for the opening show (ie) 9 am at Central cinema,Madurai on Deepavali Morning
You know as PP also has a same story line like that of PMP, we were so dejected because PP in quality was no match for PMP. So sad were we, our group decided to go to "Puthiya Paravai" which had been released in Vellaikannu Theatre for Deepavali. We did go to the evening show for Puthiya Paravai to tide over the dissapointment of Pilot, whereas our original idea was to go to any one of the so many new releases for Deepavali (like Thappu Thalangal,Sivappu Rojakkal,Aval appadithan, Manitharil Ittanai Nirangala, Thai Meethu Sathiyam, Vandikaran Magan etc)
