CHENNAI: Popular Carnatic musician Mandolin U Srinivas passed away at a private hospital in the city on Friday.
Sources at Apollo Hospital hospital, where the musician was admitted few days ago, said he died at 10 am today.
The 45-year-old musician had undergone a liver transplant and had been recovering well, the sources said. "However last night he developed some complications and passed away in the morning," they said.
Srinivas was the first person to use mandolin in Carnatic music. He modified the instrument to suit the Carnatic pitch and raga. He is said to have found the instrument in a studio where his father was employed.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2010.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the passing away of U Srinivas.
PM recalled the maestro's dedication and long-standing contribution towards music and added that he will always be remembered.
