Englishman replaces Pierce Brosnan as the suave spy in 'Casino Royale'
James Bond is going back to his roots. And they’re blond.
Sandy-haired English actor Daniel Craig was unveiled Friday as the star of the next Bond film, “Casino Royale,” due in theaters in November 2006.
“I had a couple of martinis when I found out,” Craig said.
Craig’s name, the subject of speculation for weeks, was revealed as he was whisked down the River Thames aboard a military speedboat to a waterside news conference. He replaces Pierce Brosnan, who has starred in the last four Bond films.
Craig, 37, said he’d only found out on Monday that he definitely had the part. He said that while being considered, he’d had to think about whether he really wanted the job.
“It was difficult, but I tried to think about it like any other job. We have got an incredible script, and that is my first line of attack. Once I had read it, I knew I did not have any choice,” Craig said. “It is a huge iconic figure in movie history, and those things don’t come along very often.”
Producer Michael G. Wilson said 200 actors had been considered, but Craig was the only one who had been offered the role.
Speculation about the new Bond included Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell, Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.
Craig has had a busy career that includes roles in the 1990s British TV drama “Our Friends in the North” and films including “The Mother,” “Enduring Love” and “Layer Cake.” He played Paul Newman’s sinister son in “Road to Perdition,” was poet Ted Hughes opposite Gwyneth Paltrow’s Sylvia Plath in “Sylvia” and appeared in this year’s thriller “The Jacket” with Adrien Brody.
He’s currently filming another thriller, “The Visiting,” with Nicole Kidman.
Craig is the first blond Bond and the second Englishman to play the suave British superspy.
Of the five other actors to play 007, only Roger Moore is English-born. Sean Connery is Scottish, George Lazenby Australian, Timothy Dalton was born in Wales and Brosnan is Irish.
'Tougher and grittier'
A respected screen actor but not — until Friday — a household name, Craig acknowledged feeling uncomfortable with the level of fame his new role will bring him.
At the packed press conference inside a Royal Navy facility on the Thames, he fielded questions from various reporters, tabloid gossip columnists and a journalist from the Ministry of Defense magazine.
His favorite Bond? Sean Connery.
Favorite Bond film? “Goldfinger.”
Favorite Bond girl? Diana Rigg in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”
But he brushed aside questions about supermodel Kate Moss and actress Sienna Miller — both tabloid fixtures whom he has reportedly dated.
“I’m not going to get into that,” he said.
Ian Fleming’s first Bond novel, originally published in 1953, “Casino Royale” is one of the few Bond adventures not to feature the MI6 gadget-maker Q. It was previously filmed as a 1967 spoof starring Peter Sellers.
Director Martin Campbell — who directed Brosnan’s first Bond outing, “GoldenEye” in 1995 — said the movie would be “tougher and grittier” than previous films, with “more character and less gadgets.” He said the story would begin with Bond first becoming a “double-0” agent.
“It is really the arc in which he becomes Bond,” Campbell said. “He starts out just having earned his double-0 stripes and comes out at the end the Bond we know and love.
“A lot of the embryonic Bond things will come out in the film — how he gets the Aston Martin, how he mixes a martini.”
“Casino Royale” is due to begin filming in January, in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and at Pinewood Studios near London. Campbell said the budget will likely exceed $100 million.
“I am looking most forward to actually starting getting on with it, and feeling intimidated about pretty much everything,” Craig said. “It is a sort of responsibility, but it is also a huge adventure.”

Casino Royale production update - Bahamas wraps, filming in Prague set to complete end of May
Director Martin Campbell is scheduled to conclude principal photography on Casino Royale in the Czech Republic at the end of May. The final shots in the country will take place in Czech spa town Karlovy Vary, which will double as Montenegro - reports Screen Daily.
Bond franchise holders EON Productions are working with MGM and Columbia Pictures on the film, which started shooting January 30.
MGM executives toured the set of Casino Royale in Prague on April 6. In town to promote the planned launch of the MGM Channel in central Europe, MGM chairman and CEO Harry Sloan, COO Rick Sands, MGM Networks executive VP Bruce Tuchman and others toured Barrandov Studios sound stages where Campbell was filming a critical gambling scene between James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, and villain Le Chiffre, played by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen.
Although Bond and Le Chiffre play baccarat in Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel, the game will be Texas Hold ‘Em poker in the 21st Bond film.
Casino Royale’s filming in the Bahamas wrapped April 5. The Caribbean location stands in for Madagascar, where Casino Royale begins with Bond chasing down and apparently killing a villain.
From Prague, filming will move to Venice for exteriors for five days, after which it returns to Pinewood Studios in the UK. The climactic action scenes will make use of the water tank on Pinewood’s 007 stage. The existing tank is being made deeper for Casino Royale, growing from a current depth of 8 feet to 20 feet.
Columbia will release the film on November 17.

Sir Sean Connery is considering turning a novel by an Edinburgh author into a Hollywood blockbuster - reports The Scotsman.
The former James Bond actor, who earlier this week said he did not want to act again, has been in contact with Ken McClure about bringing his controversial novel The Gulf Conspiracy to the big screen.
Connery, who has been an executive producer on such blockbusters as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Finding Forrester, Entrapment, The Rock and Just Cause, may even take on the behind the scenes role for the new movie.
The Gulf Conspiracy is a fictional thriller which centres on the theory that vaccinations were responsible for the development of Gulf War Syndrome.
Vincent Finlayson, Dr McClure's business manager, has been in contact with the Oscar-winning actor about the project.

is Thandie NEwton acting in Royale?
Guess not ..... she has acted in Crash n MI 2 i believe ... is that the same girl u r talking about ?
Eva Green is with Casino Royale !
Eva Green - Vesper
Vesper Lynd works for the Treasury Department and is sent to assist 007 on the “Casino Royale” mission. Intelligent, beautiful, but with many dark secrets, Vesper is the ultimate Bond girl.
It is Vesper's job to control the purse strings of the mission, and to decide how much of the Treasury's money Bond can risk in his poker game with Le Chiffre.
Having to share a long train ride with Agent 007, Vesper soon sums up Bond and puts him “in his place”. As with Fleming's character, Vesper is business-orientated and does no take to Bond's attitude. But, Bond and Vesper eventually warm to each other as they spend more time together, with 007 ultimately naming his new vodka martini recipe after her.
Contrary to Fleming’s character, the Vesper of the film appears to have shed much of venerability and adopted the recently cliched Bond Girl mentality.
Although there are hints to past troubles, Vesper's character is not the the "damaged goods" of the 1953 novel. Her fate, although tragic, is not the same as the literary one, with Vesper's demise becoming more cinematic - but still as poignant for Bond.
Ya
The Girl MI2 one
She s awesome ... especially her eyes !
Michelle Yeoh of Tomorrow Never Dies, is from My country...
I used to like JB movies as a kid.....I rem. seeing Goldfinger (esp. rem. the scene wher sum man gets shot in the backseat of the car by the Chinese driver & the car eventually gets crushed by a machine)......then, Living Daylights (esp. liked the song "Hey driver, wher r u going...")......
I dont rem. seeing Octopussy, I believe the part shot in India was at Udaipur (I'd been there once! :))....altho I dont really like the look of the poster of tat movie, wher the actress is depicted like a Goddess! (w/ multiple hands):
http://www.movieposter.com/poster/MP...Octopussy.html
I liked Octopussy mainly bcos most of the shooting was done in India !
and our own Vijay Amritraj acted in it as Bond's friend.
There's a chase scene in this move where two Autorickshaws speed through the city of Jaipur, with leaps & bounds !
I use to wonder whether the drivers who drove those autos were recruited from Chennai ? Since auto drivers in Chennai are quite adept in speeding, leaping over potholes, and other stunts !
the Name is BOND, James BOND !
an unforgettable dialogue !
The best James Bond for me for ever will be Pierce Brosnan. He blended his Irish charms beautifully with the character. :( that he is not doing any more Bond Movies.
dsath...me too...(but i've only his 007 movies...:P)...
i saw the trailer for Casino Royale....nice...but i don't like Daniel Craig....so so....
My favs - Tanya Roberts ( "Moonraker" ) and the Bond girl in "The Spy who loved me".
dsath : my favorite too !Quote:

Fire Erupts on New James Bond Movie Set
Jul 30, 8:18 AM EST
A blaze erupted Sunday on the set of the latest James Bond movie west of London, but no injuries were reported, fire officials said.
The fire broke out just before 11:30 a.m. at Pinewood Studios, about 19 miles west of London, Buckinghamshire Fire Brigade said.
Eight fire engines were called to the set, officials said.
Television footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the building, with the roof of the "Casino Royale" set charred and caved in.
"It is just a complete mess," said Fraser Pearson, spokesman for the Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. "I would say the whole building has been damaged by the fire. It is still smoking quite badly. There has definitely been a large blaze here."
Roads near the studio were shut down briefly, but the blaze was contained and no one was hurt, said Vicky Evans, spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police.
The vast stage had been transformed into a replica of Venice, Italy, where part of the film is set. "Casino Royale," due for release in October, will be the first film featuring actor Daniel Craig as agent 007.
Craig was chosen last year to replace Pierce Brosnan as the British super-spy.
