How singers were chosen for the songs

Dear All,

Its a wonder .. how generally singers were chosen for a particular song.... And those songs also become fabulous hits / smashing hits....
There might be lengthy discussions between Director and the Music director and also the producer .. as to who can sing this song..
There could also be like... pre-set combination like...
For Shivaji / MGR / Jayashankar / Ravi Chandran / AVM Rajan - TMS TMS only
For Savithri / Sarojadevi / Jaya / Vani Shreee etc etc... Mostly PS only...

but I wonder how they finalise the singer.

There could be numerous exchange of thoughts before a singer is finalised.

CAN WE EXPECT FROM SENIOR HUBBERS AS TO HOW SINGERS WERE CHOSEN AND HOW SUCH SONGS BECAME GLORIOUS HITS AND TIME IMMEMORIAL ONES.

then its not only PS.. even LRE has sung many hit songs for her. In some films like Kumari kottam and Kumari peN (except one song thenirukkum malarinilE) all songs are for LRE. In "nAN" also "vandhal ennodu" and "ammanO samiyO" are by LRE !

Yes Madhu... For JJ even at times LRE's voice suited well...

but one particular song of PS -- in Major chandrakanth.. Oru naal yaaro... will precisely fit in with JJ...

Also.. in Venira aadai.... yenna yenna vaarthaigalo....

Probably is our own imagination which gets registered in our minds and it goes on... Its a wonder only...

All of you have seen "Chittukuruvikkenna kattuppaadu" from Savaley Samaali. It seems PS voice very suit for JJ. Same like that "Aadai muzhuthum nanaiya, nanaiya mazhai adikkuthadi" from Nam Naadu.

Do you know which is not suit for JJ..??. In Oli vilakku, "Naanga pudhusaa kattikitta jodithaanunga" by PS. It is a LRE type song and she must have given chance.

Another suit of PS voice is, K.R.Vijaya (all songs are very suit):

For example: "Vilakketri vaikkiren... vidiya vidiya yeriyattum" from Soodhaattam.

For Chittukurivikenna song... I think PS got national award ??

It was one of those perfectly matched songs.... for JJ.

Also in Deiva magan.... Kootathilay yaar dhan kodhuvaithavaro.....

The entire Vennira aaadai songs... especially ammamaa kaatru vandhu aadai thotuu paadum.. ( probably the first movie of JJ and it got registered with the depth of PS with JJ ?? )

In aayirathil oruvan..... Yaarai thaan nambuvadho bethai nenjam.... 100 % match for JJ ??

I think u r mentioning abt either "unnai naan sandhithEn" or " aadaamal aadugiREn" both from Ayirathil oruvan !

Probably age is catching up with me.. !!

By the way.. Yaaraithaan nambuvadho was a mismatch for Sarojadevi...PS combination.. I feel..

The best of PS - Sarojadevi ... probably..

Aadiperukku songs.... Kaveri odam... kavi sonna paadal..

Also... Kalyanaparisu...

Also Unnai Ondru ketpen.... ( Ushaji and Sharadhajee are going to pounce on me about mentioning this song !! as this is their favourite song :)

Let us take the movie… Ninaithaalay inikkum….

For Barathi Kannammaaa ( my all time favourite song ) --- SPB with VJ

Yaadhum Uray….. SPB with PS

Anandha Thaandavamo….. LRE

Eniya ulagam….. LRE

While SPB remained in tact for Kamal………….

I wonder how MSV chose different singers for a single heroene…. Jayapradha….

Except few, all others not give much importance for voice matching. Not only in Ninaithaaley Inikkum, but many movies.

For example: In the movie 'Johny', IR has used S.Janaki, Jency, Suthaja.... all sung for one Sreedevi. (Shailaja's song is not for Sreedevi).

In Kamal, Rajini movies also, one song will be by SPB, next one by Jesudoss and another one by Malaysia Vasudevan.

In present days also, MDs are using Hariharan, Unnikrishnan, Tippu, Harish Ragavendra, Shanker Mahadevan.. all for one hero.

There was a period they fixed TMS for Shivaji, MGR, Jai, Ravi and PBS for Gemini, Muthuraman...etc.

But it was broken by MGR in 'Adimai penn' by Aayiram Nilave Vaa.

In Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban, he used TMS, SPB, Yesudoss all for MGR.

I have also seen Malaysia quite frequently used for Rajini once....

Again, IR tried a big experiment to bring in Malaysia for Shivaji.... in Vellai roja....... but at that time , TMS was over the hill.

MV did a fine job for Sivaji in mudhal mariyAdhai:-) It was probably IR's choice...

Probably as TMS was ageing... Malaysia was the only guy whose voice modulation was coming to terms with Shivaji's tone... and he became an automatic choice....

What Balaji told is correct....

After TMS, the fair coincident voice for Sivaji is Malaysia Vasudeavn only. (We can see, even SPB and KJY sung for Sivaji, they are not matching).

Apart from Muthal Mariyaathai songs, another song by MV is very much suit for Sivaji.

That is:

"Sandhana nilavoli.. thandhanam enumbadi
aadadi poomagaley....."

by IR in the movie 'Lakshmi Vandhaachu', for which Jayachitra and Revathi were dancing in a lawn.

I have also heard C.S.Jayaraman..... for Shivaji.... Anbaalay pesiya en arivu selvam..............
and Ka ka ka....

Strange... It was a total mismatch in my opinion....

May be those were the early years of Shivaji and nobody bothered about the voice matching...

Also, I have seen Seerkayi Govindarajan… for Muthuraman…. Its again a mismatch… probably… PBS was a good match for Muthu….
especially for :

1. Raja raja sree rajan vandhaan
2. Mounamay paarvaiyal oru paatu paadavendum
3. Poga poga theriyum

Later, SPB suited Muthu ....



For MGR… after TMS… probably KJY came close to matching….

Before TMS joined with Shivaji, there were toomuch mismatching singers for Shivaji, like

CSJayaraman (you mentioned some songs) and also

"Vinnodum mugilodum"
"Kaaviyamaa...nenjin Oviyama"
"Vanna thamizh pennoruththi"
"Aayiram kan podhaathu vannakiliye"
"Aarambam aavathu pennukkulle"... and so on

also AMRaja:

"Then unnum vandu" (amara deepam)
"Idai kai irandil aadum" (vidi velli)
"Koduthu paar..paar..paar..(same)
"Ullangal ondraagi thullum podhiley" (punar janmam).. and many

and Trichy Loganathan in Kattabomman, Kappalotiya Thamizhan..etc

After TMS joined only, we have the suitable voice with perfect matching for Shivaji.

Lets analyse… Netru Indru Naalai….

How did .. MGR chose… SPB for two lovely songs… Paadumbodhu naal thendral kaatru and for
Angay varuvadhu yaaro….

Eventhough he chose TMS For….. Neen ennenna sonaaalum kavidhai…

And for….. Innoru vaanam… and also for

Naan padithen kaanjiyilay netru…. ( probably for this song. He had no choice but TMS ? )

Can somebody comeup with the facts on this pls..

By the way… this movie is one of the evergreen hits of MSV….. along with Kudiyirundha koil…..

As you menrtioned "Kaanjiyile naan padithen" song was purely of TMS type song, and if somebody (SPB or KJY) handle it, definitely it might not touch our hearts.

For example, one TMS formula song was given to KJY, and was horrible to digest. Do you know which one..?

Yes it is "Naalai ulagai aala vendum uzhaikkum karangaley" from Uzhaikkum karangal.

In 'Maduraiayai meeta sundhara pandiyan'
"Veera magal poraada" and "Thaayagathin sudhandhirame engal selvam" was by TMS.
"Thendralil aadum koondhalil kanden" by Yesudoss, and
"Amudha thamizhil" by Jayachandran.

In Neethikku thalai vanangu, "Kanavugale...aayiram kanavugale" and "Paarka paarka sirippu varudhu" by TMS and "Indha pachai kilikoru" by KJY.

In Shivaji movies also this 'kularupadi' started from Sumadhi en sundhari (in fact SPB's 'Pottu vaitha mugamo' is a good one), it continued in Raja (Irandil ondru..nee ennidam sollu), then it continued in most of the films. KJY started from Dr.Siva "Malarey...kurinji malarey" a master piece for all (MSV, Vaali, KJY, SJ).

MGR used the song.. Naan padithen Kaanjiyilay.... for his election campaign in 1977 and won with handsome margin.......

Patti thottee ellaam ketta padal.....

Also the song....Neenga nallaaa irukkanum from Idhaya kanee..


when he was in Brooklyn Hospital... battling for life.........

The mismatch got carried to Shivaji also.. Yes you are correct.....

Pottu vaitha mugamo is one of SPB's all time hits but for Shivaji !!

In kavari maan also..... Poo polay un punnagayil......

When the song got released... I though SPB sang for Rajini !!

The song "Kanavugale...aayiram kanavugale" TMS voice seems to imagine it was sung for Shivaji, because he used the tone which he use for Shivaji always.

Same like that, in "Parakkum paavai" if you hear the song "Kalyaana naal paarka sollalaama", it will seems that it was sung for Jaishanker, but actually for MGR.

Also.. IR used KJY for Rajini for the song.... Aaagayam melay.....

I think for Rajini ... SPB , KJY also suited well but the most perfect guy was Malaysia ??

almost all the songs from paayum puli was by MV which suited Rajinikanth well.
thiru theril varum silaiyo was very well sung by SPB, I don't think TMS would have done that much justice for that song during that time

In pudhukavithai MV voice suited well for Rajini whereas KJY's voice for vellai pura ondru does n't suit him.

individually if we hear vellai pura ondru, sounds great, but true
