Friends i came up with this idea of analyzing decade wise output of raaja's music (70's 80's,90's and now this 2000). particularly the last 10 years, how it fares when compared to the last 3 decades (the 70's could be much shorter but under GKV his ideas were started appearing from the early 70's, may be someone can throw light on this..)
I would like your thoughts about it. if the topic itself is not worth enough to discuss please go ahead say it so :)

சென்னை திரை இசைக்கலைஞர்கள் சங்கம் ஆஸ்கர் விருது பெற்ற ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மானைப் பாராட்டி நடத்திய விழாவில் இளையராஜா உரை நிகழ்த்தினார். அதில் அவர் பழம்பெரும் இந்தி இசையமைப்பாளர்களான ரோஷன் மற்றும் மதன் மோகனைப் பற்றி ஒரு கதை சொன்னார். "ரோஷனும் மதன் மோகனும் தம் வாழ்நாளில் சந்தித்துக் கொண்டதே இல்லை, ரோஷன் மறைந்தபோது அவருடைய உடலைப்பார்த்து கண்ணீர்விட்டபடி மதன் மோகன் சொன்னது 'இனி யாரோடு நான் போட்டியிடுவேன்?' என்று. அவர்கள் இருவரும் நேரில் சந்தித்ததே இல்லை. ஆனால் தங்களது இசையால் ஒருவக்கொருவர் உரையாடிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்". எதை குறிப்பிடுவதற்க்காக இளையராஜா அம்மேடையில் இதை சொன்னார் என்று எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை, ஆனால் ஒன்று உறுதியாகத் தெரியும், இந்தச் சம்பவம் உண்மையல்ல!
ரோஷனும் மதன் மோகனும் மிகச்சிறந்த நண்பர்கள். தன்னிடம் மதன் மோகனை அறிமுகப்படுத்தி வைத்தவரே ரோஷன் தான் என்று ஜெயதேவ் குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கிறார். ஜெய்தேவ் அந்த காலகட்டத்தின் இன்னொரு அசாதரணமான இசையமைப்பாளர். இம்மூவரின் நட்பின் ஆழத்தைப்பற்றி அக்டோபர் 2009 உயிர்மையில் வெளியான 'ஜெய்தேவ், தனித்த இசைப்பயணி' என்ற எனது கட்டுரையில் நீங்கள் வாசித்தறியலாம். இளையராஜாவை போன்ற ஒரு மேதை தனக்கு நன்கு அறியாத ஒரு விஷயத்தை ஒரு மாபெரும் மேடையில் எப்படி சொன்னார் என்ற குழப்பத்தில் நான் மூழ்கி இருக்கும்போது இன்னுமொரு சம்பவம் நிகழ்ந்தது. சமீபத்தில் வெளியான அவரது 'பழசிராஜா' சினிமாப் பாடல்களின் தோல்விக்கு காரணம் பாடலாசிரியர் ஓ என் வி குரூப்பின் பாடல்வரிகள் சரியில்லாததே என்று தெரிவித்தார் இளையராஜா!

இதைப் படித்தாலேயே பல இளையராஜா ரசிகர்களுக்கு எரிச்சலும் கோபமும் வரும். ஏன் என்றால் அவர்களைப் பொறுத்தவரை இளையராஜா ஒரு கடவுள். அந்த கடவுள் ஒருபோதும் எந்த விஷயத்திலும் தவறுசெய்ய மாட்டார். அத்தகைய பல இளையராஜா ரசிகர்கள் பழசிராஜா படத்தின் இசை மிக சிறப்பானதென்றும், இளையராஜா சமீபத்தில் இசையமைத்த மற்ற சில மலையாள சினிமாக்களின் இசை அதைவிட சிறப்பானதென்றும் எல்லாம் எனக்கு மின்னஞ்சல் அனுப்புகிறார்கள்.

பிறப்பு, இறப்பு, பூப்படைதல், நிச்சயதார்த்தம், திருமணம் என கிராம வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு பருவத்திற்குமான நாட்டுப்புற இசை வெளிப்பாடுகள் இருக்கின்றன. விவசாயம் சார்ந்த உழுதல், விதைத்தல், நாற்று நடுதல் மற்றும் அறுவடைக்காலங்கள், கோயில் விழாக்கள், மதம் சார்ந்த மற்ற பண்டிகைகள் போன்றவற்றில் எல்லாம் இந்த இசைதான் ஓங்கி ஒலிக்கிறது. தங்களின் நம்பிக்கைகளை, அச்சங்களை, எதிர்பார்ப்புகளை, கொண்டாட்டங்களை உடைந்ந குரல்களில் கிராமிய இசைக்கலைஞர்கள் பாடுகிறார்கள். கிராமங்களிலும் வனங்களிலும் கிடைக்கும் விலங்குகளின் தோல், மரம், மூங்கில், கொட்டாங்கச்சி, சுரைக்குடுவை, மண்பானை போன்றவற்றில் எல்லாமிருந்து தங்களின் இசைக்கருவிகளை அவர்கள் உருவாக்கிக்கொள்கிறார்கள். கிராமங்களில் சுற்றித்திரிந்த காலங்களில் சொந்தமாக மூங்கிலில் புல்லாங்குழல்களைச் செய்து அதை வாசிப்பவராக தான் இருந்ததை இளையராஜா பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார்.
நாட்டுப்புற இசை கிராமங்களில் யாராலும் பயிற்றுவிக்கப்படுவதல்ல. இவ்விசையக் கற்றுக்கொள்ள தங்கள் வாழ்வையே அர்ப்பணிக்கும் மாணவர்களோ கற்றுக்கொடுக்கும் ஆசிரியர்களோ அங்கில்லை. அவர்களின் ஏழ்மை இத்தகைய வசதிகளை அவர்களுக்கு வழங்குவதில்லை. செல்வந்தவர்களின் விவசாய நிலங்களில் அன்றாடம் உழைத்தோ, தங்கள் சிறிய நிலத்தில் கஷ்டப்பட்டு விவசாயம் செய்தோ அல்லது இதர சில்லரை வேலைகள் செய்தோ தமக்கான இரண்டுவேளை உணவைப்பெறும் ஏழை மக்கள்தான் அங்கு நாட்டுப்புற இசைக்கலைஞர்களாகவும் இருக்கிறார்கள்.
இவர்களில் ஒருவரே ராசையா என்ற இயற்பெயர் கொண்ட இளையராஜா. தேனி மாவட்டத்தின் ஒரு கிராமத்தில் மிகவும் ஏழ்மையான குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்த இளையராஜா விவசாய தினக்கூலியாக வேலை பார்த்தவர். எட்டாவது வரையே பள்ளிக்கல்வி பெற்றவர். எவ்வித நோக்கமுமில்லாமல் நாட்டுப்புற இசையை தொடர்ந்து கவனித்துக் கேட்டுக் கற்றுக்கொண்டு, அதன் நுட்பங்களைக் கிரகித்துக் கொண்டவர். அவரின் தாயார் எண்ணற்ற நாட்டுப்புறப்பாடல்களின் சேமிப்புக் கிடங்காக இருந்தவர். சிறுவயதிலிருந்து கேட்டறிந்த அப்பாடல்கள் தான் அவருடைய நுட்பமான இசையுணர்வை வடிவமைத்தது, பின்னற் அவரது இசை ஆளுமையை தீர்மானித்தது. பல்வகைப்பட்ட நாட்டுப்புற இசை வடிவங்களையும் கிராமிய இசையின் உயிரோட்டமான உணர்ச்சிகளையும், இங்கு இசை கேட்கும் அத்தனைபேரின் அறைகளுக்குள்ளும் கொண்டுவந்து சேர்த்த முதல் இந்திய திரையிசையமைப்பாளர் இளையராஜா தான்.
இந்திய நாட்டுப்புற இசை¨யோடு மேற்கத்திய செவ்வியல் இசையை கலந்து என்றும் அழியாத பல பாடல்களை முதலில் உருவாக்கியவர் சலில் சௌதுரி.1940களிலேயே அவர் அதைச் செய்தார். ஆனால் அவரது அரிதான இசை பெரும் வணிக வெற்றிகளை அடையாமல் போயிற்று. கிராமிய இசையுடன் மேற்கத்திய செவ்வியல் இசையை கலந்து இளையராஜா உருவாக்கிய திரைப் பாடல்களோ அவரை தமிழ் சினிமா இசையின் பேரரசனாக எழுபதுகளின் இறுதியிலிருந்து தொண்ணூறுகளின் தொடக்கம் வரை கோலோச்ச வைத்தது.
நாட்டுப்புற இசையைப்போலவே மேற்கத்திய இசையை நோக்கிய தேடுதலும் சிறுவயதிலிருந்தே இளையராஜவிடம் முளைவிட்டிருந்தது. அவரின் குடும்பத்தினர் அப்போது கிறிஸ்துவ மதத்தின் உறுப்பினர்களாக இருந்தார்கள். மேற்கத்திய செவ்வியல் இசை அடிப்படையில் அமைந்த பல கிறிஸ்துவப் பாடல்களை கேட்டு வளர்ந்த அவருக்கு அவ்வடிவத்தை புரிந்துகொள்ள ஒரு வாய்ப்பாக இருந்தது தேவாலய நிகழ்சிகள். பிறகு, சென்னையில் இசையாசிரியர் தன்ராஜ் மாஸ்டர் மேற்கத்திய இசையின் நுட்பமான வேறுபாடுகளையும், சிக்கல்களையும் அவருக்கு பயிற்றுவித்த்தார். செவ்வியல் கிதார் இசையிலும் பியானோ இசையிலும் சிறப்பான தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவராக இளையராஜா விளங்கினார். அவரது பாடல்களில் பியானோ, கிதார் மற்றும் வயலின் குழுவை அவர் பயன்படுத்திய விதம் மேற்கத்திய செவ்வியல் இசையிலும் அவருக்கிருக்கிற ஆழ்ந்த புரிதலுக்கும் புலமைக்கும் சான்றாக இருக்கிறது.
சலில் சௌதுரி உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு இசையமைப்பாளர்களிடம் கிதார் மற்றும் காம்போ ஆர்கன் வாசிப்பாளராக பலவருடம் பணியாற்றியது இளையராஜாவுக்கு இசையமைப்பாளர் ஆவதற்குறிய மிகுந்த நம்பிக்கையை அளித்தது. இருநூறுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட கன்னடப் படங்களில் இசையமைப்பாளர் ஜி.கே.வெங்கடேஷிடம் உதவியாளராக பணியாற்றியபோது கிடைத்த படைப்புச் சுதந்திரமும் அவரை முக்கியமான இசையமைப்பாளராக உருவாக்கியதில் பெரும்பங்கு வகித்தது.
நாட்டுப்புற மேற்கத்திய இசைக் கலவையுடன் கர்நாடக செவ்வியல் ராகங்களையும் அதிகளவில் அவர் பாடல்களில் பயன்படுத்தினார். சாதாரண இசை ரசிகர்களும் விரும்பும் வண்ணம் கடினமான ராகங்களை கூட காதுக்கினிய வடிவங்களில் கொடுத்தார் இளையராஜா. சினிமாவுக்கு இசையமைக்கத்தொடங்கிய முதல் ஆண்டிலேயே (1976) நாங்கு படங்களுக்கு இசையமைத்த இளையராஜாவின் படங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும் பல மடங்காகி வளர்ந்து 1992ல் 56 படங்களென்று ஆகாயத்தை தொட்டது. இந்த காலகட்டத்தில் தென்னிந்தியாவின், குறிப்பாக தமிழ்நாட்டின் ஒவ்வொரு மூலை முடுக்குகளிலும் அவரது பாடல்கள் மட்டும் தான் ஒலித்தது.
மலையாளம், தெலுங்கு, கன்னட சினிமாவில் பல படங்களிலும் அவ்வப்போது ஹிந்தியிலுமாக பல வருடங்களாக சினிமா இசையை ஆட்சி செய்தவர் இளையராஜா. சிக்கலான ஆனால் இனிமையான மேற்கத்திய இசை ஒழுங்குகளாலும், நுட்பமானதும் நவீனமானதுமான பேஸ் கிதார் உபயோகத்தாலும் திரைப் பாடல்களின் பின்னணி இசையை ஒரு மறுமலர்ச்சிக்கு உட்படுத்தியவர். அத்தகைய இசையின் வாயிலாக கருவியிசையை விரும்பும் இசை ரசிகர்களுக்கு பல விருந்துகளை படைத்தவர் அவர்.

உதாரணமாக, இளையராஜா பாப் மார்லி, பாப் டிலான் இருவரையும் முற்றிலுமாக நிராகரித்துவிட்டவர். அவர்களை 'குப்பை' என்று குறிப்பிட்டவர். எந்த ஒரு கலைஞனும் விமர்சனத்துக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டவன் அல்ல என்ற முறையில் அவருக்கு விமர்சிக்கும், நிராகரிக்கும் உரிமை இருக்கிறது. ஆனால் தங்களது இசையால் மிகப்பெரும் சமூக மாற்றத்தையும் அத்துடன் முழுமையான இசையின்பத்தையும் வழங்கிய இவ்விருவரின் தகுதியும் இளையராஜாவின் இந்த விமர்சனத்தால் குறைந்துவிடாது. இருவரும் உலகெங்கும் லட்சக்கணக்கான ரசிகர்களையும் விதந்தோதுபவர்களையும் கொண்டிருந்தனர். இந்த நிமிடம் வரை அதிகளவில் விற்பனையாகும் பல இசைத்தொகைகளை கொடுத்த கலைஞர்கள்.
பாப் டிலான் இளையராஜாவை விட இரண்டு வயது மூத்தவர். இன்னும் தனது பாடல்களாலும் இசையாலும் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருப்பவர். சமீபமாக டிலானின் பிறந்தநாள் இந்தியாவின் மிஜோராம் மாநிலத்தில் கூட ஒரு மாதம் முழுதும் எவ்வாறு கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது என்று வாசித்தது ஞாபகம் வருகிறது.
தனது முப்பத்தி எட்டாவது வயதில் மறைந்துவிட்ட ரேகே இசை அதிசயம் பாப் மார்லி இளையராஜாவை விட இரண்டு வயது இளையவர். மிகவும் ஏழ்மையான, ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட குடும்பச்சூழலில் பிறந்தவர். இளையராஜாவை விட துயரம் நிறைந்த ஒற் பால்யகாலத்தைக் கழிக்க நேர்ந்தவர். மோட்டார் பழுதுபார்க்குமிடத்தில் உதவியாளராகவும், தெருக்கூட்டுபவராகவும் பணிபுரிந்தவர். ஆனால் இவ்வுலகை விட்டுப் பிரியும் முன் தனது மக்களின் துயரமிக்க வாழ்வினை உயர்த்தும் ஏராளமான பணிகளைச் செய்துவிட்டுச் சென்றவர். உலகநட்சத்திரமாக மாறிய பின்னரும் தன் வேர்களில் இருந்து பிரியாதவர். ஏழைகளுக்கு தடையிலாது உதவிய மனிதர். அவர் இறந்தபோது கிட்டத்தட்ட நாலாயிரம் ஜமைக்க குடும்பங்கள் அவரை நம்பி இருந்தன!
பொதுவான கலை விமரிசன மரபில் இரண்டு தரப்புகள் உள்ளன. ஒருவரின் கலைப்படைப்பை விமர்சிக்கும்போது கலைக்கு அப்பாற்பட்ட அவருடைய தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கையை பொருட்படுத்தத் தேவையில்லை என்பதுதான் ஒன்று. ஒரு கலைஞனின் வாழ்க்கை வழியாக அவனது கலையை, இசையை சென்றடைய முயல்வது தான் இன்னொன்று. Art without heart is futile அதாவது நல்லதோர் இதயம் வெளிப்படாத கலை வீண்போகும் என்பது தான் இந்த விமரிசன மரபின் சாரம். நல்ல உள்ளத்திலிருந்தே நல்ல கலையும் வருகிறது என்ற அந்த தரப்பைத்தான் என் இசைவிமரிசன எழுத்து வழியாக நானும் முன்வைக்க முயல்கிறேன். தாஸ்தாயெவ்ஸ்கி சொன்னதைப் போல, "சிறந்த கலை இவ்வுலகத்தை பாதுகாக் கூடுகும்".
லட்சக்கணக்கான நசுக்கப்பட்ட ஏழை மக்கள் ஒருவேளை உணவுக்காக போராடிக்கொண்டிருக்கையில், ஐம்பது லட்சம் மதிப்புள்ள தங்கப் பாதத்தை கோவில் பிரதிஷ்டைகளுக்கு அணிவிப்பதால் நீங்கள் சிறந்த மனிதர் ஆகிவிடுவீர்களா? லட்சக்கணக்கான பணத்தைக் கொண்டு 12 கோபுரங்கள் இருக்கும் ஒரு கோவிலுக்கு 13ஆவது கோபுரம் ஒன்றை கட்டுவதன் மூலம் நம் சமூகத்தைப் பீடித்திருக்கும் பிரச்சினைகள் தீர்ந்துவிடுமா? அல்லது திருவாசகம், ரமணமாலை போன்ற பக்திப்பாடல்களை கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருப்பது பசியும், வறுமையும் தீர உதவுமா?

Free-a vidunga. Anyone who concludes that you have to be a good man to become a good artist, neither knows history nor art. So why worry about such people? The whole article in a joke and is definitely an article by one who has an agenda. My feeling is that we waste our energy getting upset and angry with such articles and these fellows get some free publicity.
(The joke is that everyone jumps to defend Marley and Bob Dylan, as they are icons in the west. Both of them as artists, don't have the same output that Raja has. Do you think any westerner will jump to defend Illayaraja if someone there were to make a casual comment about him? That is our 'adimai' fate!!! You can praise the westerner in order to push our person down and you can use westerners views to push our person down.)
Anyway, to get back to eagle's topic, while I like this topic, I have to confess that I have not heard a lot of Raja of the 80s and lot of 90s as well, to give a comprehensive view. My personal feeling is that someone like Rajasaranam, who has closely observed the changes in Raja's music in the 90s and in the 2000s will be a good person to kickstart the proceedings. Most of the others are stuck in one decade, mostly 70s and 80s, to give this comprehensive view. Blame it on Raja :D

OK, I don't discount that account as baseless, let us take it as 100% credible.
Even then, how can one criticize IR? Here there are, two newcomers, begging for a chance in film field / ladder to popularity, coming to an all-time-great. What songs should they logically sing to impress him / get his approval? i.e. if they want a chance and if they are all that -errrr- humble and respectful?
Either they should sing a couple of great numbers from the 1000's this maestro has composed over decades.
Or, if fearing their mistakes could be found out and hence rejection would result, they should at least pick out some "classics" (krithi / keerthanai etc).
At the minimum, out of sheer respect for the genius in front of them, they should have chosen some works of his predecessors - KVM / MSV / SDB / Devarajan etc.
They chose to DELIBERATELY IRRITATE him by picking some works of his "wannabees", that too some obvious imitations of his works!
What else did they expect in return? IR is a composer and not a "messenger of God" to not blast them and kick them out!
And what to say about this comedian who advises how IR shouldn't have kicked them out but kissed and hugged them (because IR was also wannabee / plagiarist once upon a time)?

Everyone, everywhere gives allowance to the fact the every genius has his / her own eccentricities. I guess it is only here that we look for perfection in every sphere. So the concerned creator becomes easy target in some way or the other.
Not only regarding the incident you quoted, for almost everything said in that article there can be and there is a reasonable counter. But what is the point arguing when you know the other side is not in it for any reasonable argument but just for the sensationalism. (Just check out how Shaji twists what Raja said in the PR function and you will known that the whole article has 'agenda' written all over it. )
You're totally right about the likes of Charu / Shaji etc. They have an agenda / won't change / no amount of reasoning will help them / thoongaRa mAdhiri nadikkiRavanga etc :-)
However, I've also started to like the idea of rebuttals for one reason - just for the benefit of "onlookers".
If not for someone breaking the works of these fellows into pieces, there's possibility that at least some minds can get corrupt by these fellows. Slowly poisoned, to the point that there'll be free flowing criticism - not just of eccentricities of IR but his basic credentials. (Like this article alleges thumbi vA being a lift - even giving some link, there will be 100 other links for every IR song that people adore - and there'll be one generation that'll start believing that all those are real, even without knowing the songs or comparing what stuff is there in those links etc, which will be outrageous).
These onlookers may even look at some "IR praising articles" by the same Shaji and start reasoning - that after all he is a HCF and he cannot be wrong about the lifts!
So, these posts are basically not appeals / arguments to Shaji but expose of him, for the benefit of onlookers :-)

Nobody is above vimarsanam. Including your I.Raja. All great composers have been subjected to critical analysis and IR is no exception to it.

Precisely the reason why I too try and post some rebuttals once in a while. It is just that I felt Usha was becoming too emotional and didn't want her to lose sleep on Shaji type fellow's article. There is no way other than putting forth our view of things so that some balance is maintained. The only problem is that there is so much 'kuppai' in the net nowadays that reply to each is a tedious thing !! Anyway, let us try and keep the flag flying. I am with you as are many more here :)

Anyway, here is my effort to get the thread back on track. What I am going to write is not well researched one and hence please feel free to correct me or contradict me.
The first 5 to 6 yrs (1976 to 1981/82) timeframe: I would very broadly categorize this era as the era of innocence. Almost all the hit songs of those times had a certain innocence. Very difficult to put a finger to this but that is the feeling that I generally get when I listen to 'kuyile kavikuyile', 'sendhoora poove', 'chinna kannan azhaikiran', 'kovil mani osai', 'poovasam poo', 'chitira sevvanam' and many other songs of this era. Melody was predominant and ragas were used in ways that were quite different from what was done earlier. This innocence and preponderance of melody has tied a lot of fans to this particular era and many still consider this as Raja's peak. Our own Plum once wrote that it was difficult for him to come out of the 70s Raja and listen to anything else. The most addictive phase for many who grew up then.
1982 - 1992 : This was the era when the orchestrations started getting more elaborate, more and more experiments were being done and was also the time when music got bifurcated more clearly towards the urban and rural audience. Directors like Maniratnam and Balu Mahendra represented the urban part while Bharathiraja and his shisyas represented the rural side. The urban films had a different type of experimentation based on the synthesizer, rhythm pads etc while the rural side had experimentation in terms of how the western motifs were woven into a predominantly rural melody. Directors like Balachander probably represent a fast fading world where such a divide did not exist. So Balachander's movies had music which was a throwback to the earlier times(with some exceptions like Punnagai Mannan.) Movies had music as their subject (vadivelu: namma padam our musical subject da, puriyala) and this was due to the presence of Raja. 'Sindhu Bhairavi', 'Rudra Veena', 'Sagara Sangamam' (technically a dance based movie) and others. Raja was at his experimental best in this era and produced two instrumental albums, HTNI and NBW.
1993 - 2000 : The after effects of Rahman phenomenon were felt and the trend changed. Initially Raja's music was following the same path. Slowly (and probably reluctantly) Raja switched over to the synthesizer. The success was not immediate and nor was it phenomenal. 'Kadhalukku Mariyadai' was probably the first hit movie with the new sound of Raja. Some of the tunes became less complex, the synthesizer was used heavily and newer voices were being heard. Still Raja maintained his own aesthetics refusing to toe the popular line and kept constantly experimenting in his own way. His fans were not too happy both because the sound had changed and the equation has changed. Those were tough times for the fans as Raja lost many of the bigger banner and directors. Even in those times there were some absolute gems. An example would be 'Avatharam'. It never reached the top of the charts but today if you compare it with the film (whichever one it was) which topped the charts, you will probably be wondering as to what happened to people's taste in those days. There were quite a few good soundtracks like 'Raman Abdullah', which got blown away in the Rahman whirlwind of those times.
This was also the time that Raja was creating absolute magic in Malayalam. Some of the biggest movies of his career happened at this point in time. The first was 'Kaalapani.' The music was outstanding and I can swear that no one else would have given a score like this. Then came 'Guru', the movie every Raja lover swears has no equal in Indian Film Music history. Along with these movies came movies like 'Oru Yathra Mozhi', 'Friends', 'Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal' etc. making this an outstanding decade for Raja in Malayalam.
In essence, there was a definite impact in terms of market loss after 1992 but taking the best films that happened during those times into account, it is clear that Raja's music did not diminish and whenever called to deliver for big movies, he did it in grand style.
My hands are paining me now :( I will let someone take up the 21st century.
As I said, these are just impressions and not well researched post. So please correct me wherever I am wrong and give your own views on this subject. It is a very nice subject needing some serious attention.

Thanks Suresh... finally you took the initiative and came up with good analysis i agree with most of your observations.
Of the early ilayaraja period i too feel the same way as plum i get simply intoxicated by listening to the songs of 70's and early 80's even today. its a combination of nostalgia and great music. in fact i would say looking back those years his songs were the most creative and out of the world experience i got free of cost :)
To the innocent aspect you could also say that his heart ruled more than his mind in those period. Its my observation that most the songs of those times ends abruptly. the kind of sophisticated approach you find in the middle of 80's and thereafter were clearly absent. his music was like a uncontrollable river before he begins channelize his creative flow almost to the point of training our minds as to how to receive his songs. its no wonder if you are a ilayaraja fan you begin to look certain aspects in all the music you listen to and coming back to him always for shelter.
will share my thoughts on later periods soon. As suresh disclaimer suggest i also insist that these are personal observations. I invite people to share their thoughts on personal level or approach it from purely technical aspect that i believe will be interesting.

Hmm. That is a nice observation. Heart ruling the head during that period.
The level of sophistication did increase in the later years but what is very important is that Raja kept the soul alive. The basic emotion that the song was to convey, was always conveyed immaculately. Generally when things become more and more structured, the chances of losing out on the 'soul' becomes more real. Somehow Raja managed to keep the emotional quotient at the same level, whatever be the nature of his experimentation. After you appreciate all the nuances of oratorio and the amazing instrumentation, what stays back with you of 'Tiruvasagam' is the emotion. The way you are moved as soon as you hear 'polla vinayen' is much beyond all the technical wizardry. This is one aspect of Raja which has not changed at all. (BTW, that would be a good thread as well. As Raja changed his music, what was it that he kept the same?)
