Points 1, 7 & 9 are also applicable to hinduism, though buddisim originated from hinduism

I did start a thread way back to facilitate discussions on buddhism . This religion sure draws me . I aint contributing much and none others have the time to contribute.
I am very eager to read and learn all wht is written and discussed here.

AFAIK, chitta-shuddi is only a clean mind (the soul is infact considered to be absolutely and non-dually pure, atleast in Advaita), and is always achieved by the individual (i.e the one whose I-sense has not yet gone beyond individual body-minds). இந்தியாவில் தோன்றிய பழையன சமயங்களில் பெளத்த சமயமும் ஒன்று. இந்த பெளத்த தோற்றம் இரண்டாயிற்று ஐந்நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் ஆகிறது என்பது சரித்திர ஆய்வாளர்கள் கருத்து. காலம் கடந்து நிற்கும் குறிக்கோள், இனம், நிலம், மொழி ஆகியவற்றை கடந்த மக்கள் நலம் பெற வேண்டும் என்ற தரும நெறியினைக் கொண்டது பெளத்த சமயம்.
அது தமிழர்களின் வாழ்க்கை நெறியாக இருந்துள்ளது என்பதற்கு வரலாற்றுச் சான்றுகளும், இலக்கிய சான்றுகளும் பல உண்டு. பிற சமயங்களின் கோட்பாடுகளை ஒப்பு நோக்க, பெளத்த நெறியின் சிறப்பையும் நம்மால் உணர முடியும். நான், எனது என்னும் செருக்கை அறுத்து, ஆரா இயற்கை ஆவாவை நீக்கி, பேதமை அகற்றி, தீயவைக்கு அஞ்சி, எண்ணத்தில் தூய்மை கொண்டு, வினைத் தூய்மையையும் மேற்கொண்டு, மூத்த அறிவுடையார் தொடர்பில் இணைந்து வாழ ஒருவனை ஊக்குவிப்பதே புத்தரின் கொள்கையாக விளங்கியது.
பிணி, மூப்பு, சாக்காடு ஆகிய துன்பங்களிலிருந்து மனிதன் விடுபட்டு, பேரின்பப் பெருநிலையை எய்தப் புத்தன் பெருமான் கண்ட வாழ்க்கை நெறியாகும். சாதி, இன வேற்றுமை இன்றி, தகுதி மிக்க சான்றோர்கள் ஏற்றுக் கொண்ட சங்கம், உலகில் நன்னெறிகளைப் பரப்பத்தான் இந்த பெளத்தம் என்று பௌத்த சங்க தருமங்கள் கூறுகிறது.
தனி மனிதனின் முன்னேற்றமே சமுதாயத்தின் முன்னேற்றம். தனி மனித வாழ்வில் ஏற்படும் மேன்மைக்கு அடிப்படையாகும். இதனை தொடர்ந்தே வீடு. நாடு, உலகம் என்ற அளவிலும் தனி மனிதனின் நல்ல, தீய செயல்கள் விளைவுகளைச் சமைக்கின்றன.
ஒரு மொழியின் ஒப்பற்ற இலக்கியமாகப் போற்றப்படும் இலக்கியம் ஒன்றில் சொல்லப்படும் கருத்துக்கள், நெறிகள், வாழ்க்கை வழிமுறைகள் அந்த இலக்கியம் தோன்றுவதற்கு முன்பே சமுதாயத்தில், மக்கள் வாழ்க்கையில் எத்தனை செல்வாக்கு பெற்றிருந்தன என்பதற்கு தக்க சான்று. அந்த வகையில் தமிழகத்திற்கும் தமிழ் மொழிக்கும் பெளத்தம் உடன்பாடாக இருந்துள்ளது. மானுட சமுதாயத்தில் தேவைப்படும் அடிப்படைத் தத்துவங்கள் பல புத்தர் கண்ட பௌத்த சமயத்திலிருப்பதால், இடம் பெற்றுள்ளதால் இன்றுவரை வளர்ந்தோங்கியுள்ளது. பிற சமயங்களின் தாக்குதல்களை எல்லம் சமாளித்து, தன் உள் வலிமை மூலம் தன்னைப் பாதுகாத்துக் கொள்ளும் ஆற்றலும் திறமையும் பெளத்த சமயத்துக்கு இன்னும் இருக்கிறது.
ஆமாம், இந்த பௌத்த சமயத்திற்கு அடித்தளமாயிருப்பது எது? யார் இந்த புத்தர் என்று அறிந்து கொள்ள விரும்புபவர்கள் மேலே தொடருங்கள்...
காசிக்கு வடக்கே ரோஹினி நதிக்கரையில் கபிலவஸ்து என்கிற நகரம் உள்ளது. அதைத் தலைநகரமாகக் கொண்டு சுத்தோதனர் என்கிற அரசர் ஆண்டு வந்தார். அவருக்கு இரண்டு மனைவிமார்கள். இவர்களில் மூத்தவர் மாயாதேவி. அவர் கர்ப்பவதி ஆனார். பிரசவத்திற்காகத் தாய் வீட்டுக்குப் போனார். பரிவாரத்தினர் புடை சூழ்ந்து வர, உயரமான சால மரங்களின் கிளைகள் தாழ்ந்து வரவேற்றன. அதன் கிளைகளிலும் ஐந்து ஐந்து தாமரை மலர்கள் தோன்றின. பறவைகள், கீதமிசைத்து இனிய குரலில் பாடின. மெல்லிய பூங்காற்று வீசிற்று. மரகிளைகள் தாழ்ந்து அரசியைச் சுற்றித் திரைகள் உண்டாயின. போகும் வழியில் லும்பினி தோட்டத்தில் ஓர் மகவை ஈன்றார். வைகாசி மாதம் பெளர்ணமி அன்று இந்தப் பூமியின் நலனுக்காகப் புத்தர் அவதரித்தார். இது நடந்தது கி.மு. 563ல். சுமார் [இன்றைக்கு] 2500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பாக நிகழ்ந்த இந்த நிகழ்வைத் தொடர்ந்து ஒரு துன்பம் வந்தது. மகவு பிறந்த ஏழாம் நாள் அன்னை மாயாதேவி மரணமடைந்தார்.
சித்தார்த்தன் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்ட அந்தக் குழந்தையைச் சிற்றன்னைதான் எடுத்து வளர்த்தார். சீரும் சிறப்புமாக அரண்மனை வாசம் செய்து வந்த சித்தார்த்தனுக்கு கோலிநாட்டு மன்னன் மகள் யசோதராவைத் திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தார்கள். இவ்வாறு பத்து ஆண்டுகளை, யாதொரு கவலையுமின்றி, சித்தார்த்தன் சுகபோகத்தில் கழித்தான். இன்பமயமான வாழ்க்கையில் சில எதிர்பாராத சந்திப்புகள் நிகழ்ந்தன. அவை வாழ்க்கை நீரோட்டத்தைத் திசை திருப்பி விட்டன. புத்தர் பெருமானுடைய வாழ்க்கை தியாகம் நிறைந்த வாழ்க்கையாகும். அன்பையும் அறிவையும் அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட வாழ்க்கை. துன்புறும் உலகுக்கு பெரும்பணி என்று கூறி, அதற்கு முதலிடம் கொடுத்து, மதத்தின் இதர நடைமுறைகளை ஒதுக்கி விட்டார்.
பேரின்ப நிலையை அடைய விரும்பும் ஒருவன் முதலில். நான்கு பேருண்மைகளை அறிவது அவசியம் ஆகும். அவை:
* துக்க காரணம்.
* துக்க நிவர்த்தி
* துக்க நிவர்த்திக்கு உரிய வழிகள்.
அதேபோன்று எட்டு வித சீலங்களால், ஒருவன் அறிவு விளக்கத்தைப் பெற முடியும் என்றார். அவை:
1. நற்காட்சி
2. நல்லெண்ணம்
3. நல்வார்த்தை
4. நற்செய்கை
5. நல்வாழ்க்கை
6. நன் முயற்சி
7. நல்லவற்றை கடைப்பிடித்தல்
8. நல்லோர் உறவு
-இந்த எட்டு சீலங்களும், துன்பத்தைத் துடைத்துப் பேரின்பத்தைக் கொடுக்கும் வாயில் ஆகும்.
சுகபோகத்தில் அழுந்திக் கிடப்பதும் தக்க பலனைத் தராது; கடும் தவம் புரிவதும் தக்க பலனை தராது. தீவிரமான இந்த இரு போக்குகளையும் புத்தர் பெருமான் ஒதுக்கி விட்டார். ஆசைப் பேய்க்கு அடிமையாகாமலும், உடலையும் உள்ளத்தையும் துன்புறுத்தி வாட்டி வதைக்காமலும் ஆனந்த நிலையை ஒவ்வொரு ஜீவனும் சுயமுயற்சியால் அடையக் கூடிய ஒரு வழியைப் புத்தர் பெருமான் கண்டறிந்தார். புத்தர் கண்ட ஞானத்துக்கு மத்திய மார்க்கம் என்று பெயருண்டு.
கொல்லாமை, கள்ளாமை, காமமின்மை, பொய்யாமை, புறங்கூறாமை, வன்சொல், பயனில மொழியாமை, வெஃகாமை, வெகுளாமை, நற்காட்சி முதலிய தசசீலங்களைப் புத்தம் கூறுகிறது. துக்கத்திற்கும், துன்பத்திற்கும் அடிப்படைக் காரணமே நமது ஆசைகள்தான் என்பதை வலியுறுத்தினார். ஆசையில், இன்பத்தில் நாட்டம் கொண்டு, உயிர்கள் அலைந்து திரியும் போது, இன்பத்தை மட்டுமா அவை அடைகின்றன? அனுபவிக்கின்றன? இல்லை. அவை துன்பத்தையும் கூடவே அனுபவிக்க நேருகின்றன.
நரை, திரை, மூப்பு, நோய், சாக்காடு முதலியன உடலைச் சாடித் துன்புறுத்துகின்றன; கோபம், பொறாமை, ஏக்கம், கவலை, வறுமை, அகந்தை, தற்பெருமை முதலியன மனத்தைச் சாடித் துன்புறுத்துகின்றன. எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் நிலையாமையின் ஆற்றல் மிகுந்து நிற்கிறது. பிணி, மூப்பு, சாக்காடு என்னும் மூன்றும் உயிர்களைப் பாதிக்கிறது. ஆகவே துக்கமே இல்லாத நிர்வாண நிலையை அடைய முயல்வது அவசியமாகும்'' என்று ஒரு முடிவுக்கு வந்தான் சித்தார்த்தன். இன்பத்தைத் தேடி மனிதன் அங்கும் இங்கும் அலைந்து திரிந்த போதிலும், முடிவில் அவன் அடையும் பயன் துன்பந்தான், சாவுதான்.
இவைப்பற்றி இரண்டாயிரத்து ஐநூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு புத்தர் சிந்திக்கத் தொடங்கினார். தாம் வாழும் அரண்மனை வாழ்வும், தம் மனைவி மக்களும் தமது சிந்தனைக்கு இடையூறாக, தடையாக இருப்பதை உணர்ந்தார். ஆகவே, அவர் அரச வாழ்வைத் துறந்தார். மனைவி மக்களைத் துறந்தார்; காடு சென்று தவமும் தியானமும் செய்து சிந்திக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அந்த சிந்தனையின் பயனாய், வாழ்க்கையின் அரிய சில முடிவுகளைக் கண்டு, மனத்தெளிவை, அதாவது ஞானத்தை அடைந்தார். தாம் அடைந்த அனுபவ அறிவை, ஞானத்தை மக்களிடையே பரப்பினார்.
''யாம் பெற்ற இன்பம் பெறுக் இவ் வையகம்'' என்னும் உயர் நோக்கோடு, தாம் கண்ட உண்மை நெறிகளை மக்களுக்கு போதித்தார். இதுதான் இன்று பௌத்த மதமாக உயர்ந்து நிற்கிறது.
கெளதம புத்தரையும் அவருடைய போதனைகளையும் பற்றி சுவாமி விவேககானந்தர் கூறிய கருத்துக்கள்:-
1. பெளத்த சமயத்தின் செல்வாக்குக்கு உட்படாத நாகரிகம் எதுவும் உலகில் இல்லை.
2. புத்தருடைய போதனைகளுள் கடவுள் பற்றிய பேச்சு இல்லை. ஆன்மா பற்றிய பேச்சு இல்லை. கருமம் செய்வது குறித்து மட்டுமே உள்ளது.
3. புத்தரைக் கடவுள் அவதாரம் என்று இந்தியா வழிபடுகிறது.
4. ஏழை எளிய மக்களுக்கு அவரவர் மொழியிலேயே மத போதனை செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று புத்தர் பெருமான் வலியுறுத்தினார்.
5. ஒழுக்கத்தை அதிகம் வலியுறுத்தி உபதேசம் செய்தவர்களுள் புத்தர் பெருமானுக்கு இணையான ஒருவரை இதுவரை உலகம் காணவில்லை.
6. முழுமையான ஒழுக்க நெறிகளை உலகுக்கு வகுத்துக் கொடுத்த முதல் மனிதர் புத்தர்.
7. யாரும் உங்களுக்கு உதவ முடியாது, உங்களுக்கு நீஙகளே உதவி செய்து கொள்ளுங்கள், உங்கள் ஈடேற்றத்தை நீங்களே தேடிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும் என்றும் புத்தர் பெருமான் போதித்தார்.
8. ஞானத்தாலும் இறை பக்தியாலும் தவத்தாலும் ஒருவர் அடையும் பூரண நிலையை, இவை இல்லாமல் புத்தர் பெருமான் அடைந்திருக்கிறார்.
9. அறியாமையும் சாதிப் பிரிவுகளுமே துன்பம் அனைத்துக்கும் காரணம் என்று புத்தர் கூறுகிறார்.
10. சில துறைகளில் பெளத்த சமயம் மேன்மை வாய்ந்த ஒரு சமயம். வேதாந்தத்தோடு சேர்த்து அதைக் குழப்பக்கூடாது.
11. அற்புதமான தார்மீக வலிமை புத்த சமயத்துக்கு இருந்த போதிலும் உருவ வழிபாட்டை தீவிரமாகக் கடைப்பிடித்து, முன்பு நிலைபெற்றுவிட்ட நம்பிக்கைகளை அது கடுமையாக எதிர்த்தது. ''இது கூடாது அது கூடாது'' என்பதிலேயே அது தன் சக்தியைச் செலவழித்தது. இவற்றின் விளைவாகத்தான் பிறந்த நாட்டிலேயே அது மறைய நேர்ந்தது.
ஆற்றல் மிக்க அறிவு நெறியாக, உலக உயிர்க் குலத்தின் துயர் துடைத்து, துன்பம் போக்கிதூய நெடியாக, மனித இன அமைதியைக் கட்டிக் காத்த அருள் நெறியாக பெளத்தம் விளங்கியது. தமிழர்கள் புத்தரை, தயாவீரன், தர்மராஜன், அருளறம் பூண்டோன், அறத்தகை முதல்வன், பிறவிப் பிணி மருத்துவன், போதி மாதவன், மன்னுயிர் முதல்வன், புத்த ஞாயிறு எனப் பற்பல பெயர்களில் போற்றிப் புகழ்ந்துரைத்து வந்துள்ளனர். கோவலன் தந்தை மாசாத்துவர் பெளத்தர். மாதவியின் மகள் மணிமேகலை பெளத்த பிக்குணியானார். மணிமேகலை பெளத்த நூலே என்றுரைக்கும் திரு வி க, " மணிமேலைச் சொல்லெலாம் அறம், பொருளெலாம் அறம், மணிமேகலையின் நாடெல்லாம் அறம், காடெல்லாம் அறம், புத்தர் பெருமானைத் தமிழில் காட்டும் ஒரு மணி நிலையம் மணிமேகலை" என்று கூறிச் சென்றுள்ளார்.
"பொய்யில் மெய்யைக் கற்பனை செய்துகொண்டு,
மெய்யில் பொய்யைக் காணும் மருளுடையார்
மெய்ப்பொருளை ஒருபோதும் அடைவதில்லை,
அவர்கள் வெறும் ஆசைகளைத் தொடர்ந்து அலைவார்கள்"
மானுட ஜாதியின் மகோன்னத ஞானி கெளதமபுத்தரை இந்துக்கள் ஒரு அவதாரம் எனக் கொள்வார்கள். மணிமேகலையின் செய்யுளோடு புத்தரின் நினைவுகளை நிறைவு செய்வோம்.
பேதமை சார்வா, செய்கை யாகும்
செய்கை சார்வா உணர்ச்சி யாகும்
உணர்ச்சி சார்வா அருவுரு வாகும்
வாயில் சார்வா ஊறா கும்மே
ஊறு சார்ந்து நுகர்ச்சி யாகும்
நுகர்ச்சி சார்ந்து வேட்கை யாகும்
வேட்கை சார்ந்து பற்றா கும்மே
பற்றிற் ஒன்றும் கருமத் தொகுதி
கருமத் தொகுதி காரண மாக
தோற்றம் சார்பின் மூப்புப் பிணி சாக்காடு
அவலம், அரற்று கவலை, கை யாறெனத்
தவலில் துன்பம் தலைவரும் என்ப. -
What is the "fundamental" difference between "Theravada" and "Mahayana" buddhisim ?
The literal meaning of "Hīnayāna" (Theravāda) can also be "the small vehicle," referring to a raft
meant to carry one person, as an arhat, to nirvana through their own effort, in contrast
to the "large vehicle" of Mahāyāna meant to carry many at once, piloted by a bodhisattva.

If I am correct "Mahāyāna" is the largest sect within buddhism, and as far as I know, Tibet has it own Buddhism sect.Quote:

Similar Rituals
1) Death or Funeral ceremonies are conducted on the first day of the incident, followed by the 7th day, 31st day and annual rituals
2) Pournami is celebrated as "poya"
3) Birth Ceremonies are also conducted in a similar fashion!
However there were some differences
1) A Bikku / Priest does not attend weddings to conduct Rituals, rather the couple seeks their blessing prior to the wedding. But in Hindu weddings a priest is a must!
2) Any one can become a Bikku (Man/Women) as long as they keep away from their material attachment and emotional bondage! :thumbsup: But in Hinduism to be come a Brahmin, you have to be born in such Family!
param, on ur point 2, how are u comparing a brahmin and a bikku?
by brahmin, do u mean a priest here? and if so, these priests need not be away from their material attachment...
or u meant a sanyasi there? if so, they need not be brahmins...
btw, w.r.to the funeral ceremonies... i think not all the hindus are following these first day, 7th day kinda rituals.. more than 50% do it as per their convenience
