    Sanskrit Classical Compositions in Movies

There are several Sanskrit compositions in movies, mostly Telugu and MalayaLam, that I liked. I sing a few of them.
I thought of posting those in Hindi songs thread. I was not sure how they would be received. That is why this new thread.

Good idea and a good starting song Raj! I know another version of this song from a 1980s movie, but will wait till you post your next pick.

I will cover a few composers before I repeat !

RD: I have a pretty good guess about the version you have in mind and the movie!

Good one Raj! This one has Balamuralikrishna, Yesudas and Susheela singing the Swaathi Thirunal krithi... GAANAM was a great movie with a radical social theme. The star cast included Lakshmi (Tamil), Ambareesh (Kannada), Poornima (Mallu/Tamil), and the movie was directed by engineer turned poet/musician/story writer/artist and movie maker Sreekumaran Thampi (Mallu). It had several of the traditional classical compositions as well as some pleasing raaga-based melodies composed by Dakshinamoorthy Swamy. I may be tempted to post "yaaramitaa..." here if you don't post it soon!

One of my favorites.. just because of the rendition. BMK sir Note that he doesn't sound like a carnatic singer at all in this song. I think it all comes so naturally for him.

RD: I forgot about the movie plot completely (I think I watched only half the movie). Can you brief us on the background to this song..

RR: It was a long time ago that I saw the movie! Can't remember the exact situation of this song. I have the movie on a VHS tape in some box somewhere; will look for it. In Gaanam, several of the traditional classical compositions were used for regular scenes too. I will post a link to a Youtube collection of most (if not all) songs from the movie on the Malayalam Film Music thread. It is a great collection.
