Bharat & Bahubali : Story of the first Chakravarthi (Emperor) of India

(For more in-depth details please refer Jainism - the below is just for entertainment purpose only)
(And this is not the story of Baahubali-the film, but a myth of Vindhyagiri at Shravanabelagola, near Bangalore)

By the end of the Vedic period, Lord Rushabhdev, the first Tirthankar [one who conquered himself and preached the technic to others], (re)organised human soceity. He had 101 siblings, 99 through his first wife amoung whom Bharat was the eldest and 2 with his 2nd wife, namely Bahubali [Bahu=arm & Bali=mighty]. Sunanda & Sundari were his daughters. The kids got immense training in every field and each one specialised in thier branch of interest. Bharat learnt the art of war & politics, Bahubali was firm and strong.

Lord Rushabhdev was the ruler of a vast geographical land and administered several states including Vinita (Ayodhya) & Taxila. When he attained omniscience, he registered all his sons to be the sucessor of several & different lands, notably Vinita to Bharat & Taxila to Bahubali. His 2 daughter accompanied him when he renounced the wordly life.

Bharat became more valliant and became very ambitious to rule every bit of Land. So he constructes a war weapon called Chakraratna - a terror wheel. With that he got hold of unoccupied lands, chased its dweller & for the rest negociated with his 97 brothers to allow him represent the entire Kingdom. The brothers, some happy, some scared accepted & surrendered their lands to Bharat and joined as pupils to their father, thus Bharat ruled Bharatvarsha (or Bharat - the origin of our country name).

Rest was a small bit of Land - Taxila, ruled by Bahubali. Bahubali sincerely thought that he has the right of his father to rule the land, and did not wish to join Bharat in his campaign. Thus the 'war-of-brothers' errupted, where Bharat fought for an annex and Bahubali battled for his homeland. Both being extremely strong, their armies faced equal deaths, but none was victorious. The noble minds interviened and called for a negociation. The brothers agreed for a duel, 'whoever-wins-has-the-say' kind of deal. The combat was announced with a set of rules - no special gadgets, only war weapons. Thus, the brothers Bharat & Bahubali, fought for days and nights slashing each other by drawing force from each other.

Bharat worried about his ferocious brother, found only one way to put him down, so broke the rule and equiped himself with Chakraratna. He swung it hard and sent it towards Bahubali, but the Chakra returned unharming his opponent as it was designed not to kill Bharat's own blood. Enraged, Bahubali fiercely jumped on Bharat and raised his strong arms which were already blazing fire with only one intention - to tear him. At that instant the whole crowd went silent, they were scared to see the end of Bharat through the hands of his Blood Brother Bahubali.

    ... to be continued ...

Bharat & Bahubali : Rider and The Elephant

The Battle of Brothers, Bharat & Bahubali, got fierce minute by minute. They were match and no-match for each other, where Bahubali used his strong arms to evade the gripping moves of Bharat. It continued until Bharat decided to go his way to take his half-brother down, and that enraged Bahubali who leaped on his brother and took hold of every strenght his half-brother pocessed. There, on the floor is Bharat, on top of whom is Bahubali, surrounded by bumb-folded onlookers, the end of the duel is triggered.

But the end was just the Begining. At that fraction, Bahubali thought for the very first time during all this land grabbing episode. Rushabhdev, his father gave a majority of his ownings to Bharat. His brothers gave away everything that was given to them to Bharat. Now, what was he, himself, doing ? Is he going to kill his own brother for the sake of a smal piece of land ? Just for the sake of something earthly ? Hasn't he already won, having his brother kneeled before him, should he kill too ? But what could he do with his hands raised, how to put its power down ? Thus, he redirects his hand to his head and subdues its power by pulling his own hair off [symbolism of the monks during Diksha, as an indication of giving up everything and of renouncing the worldly life].

Immensed in such thoughts over such temporal affairs, Bahubali stood immobile, with feet straight ahead and arms at his side, meditating for an entire year in the Yogic position of Kayotsarga-dismissing the body. Bahubali remained so immersed that even creepers began to grow on the support of his feet. [This stance gets him the name Gommatesvara, and a 57 feet statue is raised to embrace this event]. Not knowing the cause of all his embarrasing thoughts - primarily he was ashamed to bow before his other brothers if he renounces his pocessions, Bahubali seeked his father through meditation, to help him dissolve the disturbances.

Pleased with the time Bahubali had taken to find his path, his father, the Tirthankar, sends his disciple daughters Sunanda & Sundari to WAKE Bahubali up. Bahubali, in his yogic state heard the sweet voice of his sisters, calling him to get off the elephant. Bahubali opened his eyes in amazement, and found neither his sisters nor any elephant. He then realized that he was all the time Riding the Elephant of Ego. This realisation gave Gommatesvara Enlightenment and became Omniscient.

The colossal sculptured figure of Shravanbelgola was set up by Chamundraya of Ganga Dynasty in 983. When Chanundraya reached Vindhyagiri Hills, he was greeted by Kusmandi, the Jaina Goddess, who showed him the ways to find the image of Bahubali (by using a gloden bow and firing the golden arrow towards the South of the Hill). Gommatesvara statue was larger and higher than any statues of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramesses. It has been made out of a single granite rock about 57 feet tall. Upon finding the Bahubali Statue, Chamundraya wished to anoint the statue, but not a single drop from litres and litres of milk poured over the head of the statue reached the feet. A passing by old women stopped and prayed to Gommatesvara with great devotion and poured just a cup of milk which bathed the whole body of the staue and reach the feet. It was releived by the old woman that she is none other than Kusmandi herself. Thus, the anointments begin and are practiced even today. The statue is always clean and shinny, and there is an abhishekam ceremony every 25 years which is beleived to keep the statue in a very healthy condition. Epilogue :

Bharat accuired 'head-to-feet' of Bharatvarsha. Bharat flourished. Sevral years after, the Kingly Ring came off his finger. He looked at himself, his fingers have become thin. How much ever battles you win, the ultimate winner is the Time. Thus begins the tale of 'The Lord of the Rings'.
