Praise For Prasad, The 72-Year-Old Writer of 'Baahubali' And 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan'



While the hugely successful new Indian films Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Baahubali: The Beginning battle each other for box office supremacy, one man can truly be said to be on both sides of the competition at once. Veteran screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad is credited with writing the story and screenplay for the former film, and with creating the story for the latter (his son, Baahubali’s director S.S. Rajamouli, wrote that film’s screenplay).
The two films could scarcely be more different from one another. Baahubali is a grand historical epic with heavy doses of fantasy and violence and a spectacular 35-minute battle sequence that rivals the very best scenes of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Bajrangi Bhaijaan, on the other hand, is a charming and intimate modern-day road movie that deftly explores themes of love and devotion, and of prejudices across castes, religions, and political boundaries, all centered around a 6 year-old mute Pakistani girl.
When asked how he could have written both a gentle story that proposes non-violent solutions to the world’s problems, and also a violent war-themed film, Prasad replied “After you eat a sweet, don’t you like to eat something salty too?”
The marks of excellent screenwriting are evidenced not only in the ‘big picture’ elements of a film’s characters, themes and story structure, but also in the myriad details that reveal character while simultaneously advancing the narrative. Baahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan both abound in cleverly wrought and entertaining moments, such as the inventive tactics Baahubali’s Mahismati warriors use to vanquish their Kalekaya enemies, and the clues that enable Salman Khan’s character in Bajrangi Bhaijaan to learn the identity of his mute companion—played by then 6 year-old actress Harshaali Malhotra—so that he can safely deliver her home.
Each story has a moment that stayed with me as an example of delightfully skillful storytelling. In Baahubali there is a moment early in the story when the title character, played by the actor Prabhas, mischievously paints a tattoo on the hand of his sleeping paramour Avanthika, a combative beauty played by Tamannaah who tried to kill him in the previous scene. A few scenes later, when Avanthika has fallen for Baahubali and embraces him with her hand on his tattooed shoulder, it’s revealed that the pair of tattoos form a matching whole, visually underscoring the point that the two are now as one. It’s a moment that is at once charming, funny, and revealing of the main character’s clever determination.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan also has a key moment that sneaks up on the viewer and serves as a startling turning point in Salman Khan’s character Pawan’s journey. At mid-story Pawan has become frustrated both by his inability to help the little girl he calls ‘Munni,’ and also by the threat his good Samaritan efforts have posed for his relationship with his fiancee. In a moment of weakness he chooses to leave the pretty little girl in the charge of a cheerful travel agent who claims he knows people who can ‘take care’ of her. But after Pawan leaves he has a change of heart, and he frantically tracks Munni down to find her at a brothel where the travel agent has arranged to have the little girl’s virginity sold to a rich client. Pawan breaks up the transaction just in time, and firmly, irrevocably re-dedicates himself to completing the task of protecting and delivering Munni to her parents. It’s a shocking moment in the story, one I’m quite sure would never be permitted in a Hollywood studio movie, and it powerfully spins the narrative in a new direction with an emotional intensity that cements the viewer’s sympathies for the two lead characters.
At 72 years of age, Vijayendra has amassed an impressive record of successful films in his nearly three decades as a screenwriter. In addition to Baahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, other recommended movies from his career include Eega (2012), Magadheera (2009), and Chatrapathi (2005). And if you’ve seen Baahubali: The Beginning, you will undoubtedly feel compelled to return to the theater next year to see its sequel, Baahubali: The Conclusion.

கனடாவில் பாகுபலி தெலுங்கு பதிப்பு கடந்த ஞாயிறுவரை 82.64 லட்சங்களை வசூலித்துள்ளது. தமிழ் பதிப்பின் வசூல் 67.63 லட்சங்கள். இந்திப் பதிப்பு 21.13 லட்சங்களை தனதாக்கியுள்ளது.

இங்கு பாகுபலியின் தெலுங்கு பதிப்பு இதுவரை 84.12 லட்சங்களை வசூலித்துள்ளது.

ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் கடந்த ஞாயிறுவரை பாகுபலியின் தமிழ் பதிப்பு 1.19 கோடியை வசூலித்துள்ளது.

ஆஸ்கர் குறித்த செய்திக்கு ராஜமௌலி பதில்!


ராஜமௌலி இயக்கத்தில் பிரபாஸ், அனுஷ்கா, ராணா, தமன்னா, சத்யராஜ், ரம்யா கிருஷ்ணன், சுதீப் உள்ளிட்ட பலர் நடிப்பில் பிரம்மாண்டமான உருவாக்கத்தில் வெளியாகி 500 கொடிகளை வசூலித்த படம் ‘பாகுபலி’. இந்த படத்தின் வெற்றிக்கு கண்டிப்பாக அடுத்த ஆண்டு எல்லா விருது பட்டியலிலும் இடம்பெறும் என இப்போதே எதிர்பார்க்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது.
