South Indian Filter Coffee
Topic started by Sudha (@ sjcd-webcache-8.cisco.com) on Mon Jan 5 19:07:36 EST 2004.
Hi, Could someone suggest a coffee bean that is closest in taste to South Indian filter coffee? In which stores is it available? I live in the SFO bay area.
Thanks,
Sudha.

Folgers tastes pretty good. Adding chicory to it improves the thinckness of the coffee. In Virginia, I get chicory at the regualr grocery store. Request your store manager to get it for you, if not already available. Mix chicory and coffee in about 30:70 ratio. Before putting it in the filter ,grind the coffee (even if it is pre-ground Folgers) in a coffee grinder. This ensure a coffee much closer to south Indian degree coffee. Good luck. Also, check out earlier threads on coffee.

Hi RG,
Thanks a lot for your response. Is there a specific flavor of Folgers I should look for or is there just one flavor?
Sudha.

I'm so sorry I couldn't get to this earlier. I live in the DC metro area and I found chicory in Giant grocery store in the coffee isle. I don't rememeber the brand, but it's an orange and brown box (about 100-200g). I'll hopefully remember to get the name for you tommorow. Then, you can request your grocery store manager to get it for you.
If you live in or around Louisiana, it's very easy to get chicory. You can also order it online. Do a google search for 'coffee chicory'. Chicory coffee is very popular in New Orleans. I buy Folger's 100% Colombian coffee. Add one packet of the chicory to a 39 oz (1.1 kg or 2lb 7oz) can of ground coffee. Mix it well and dry grind the amount you want to brew in a little coffee grinder (even the pre-ground ones as the grind is not fine enough for our kind of filter). Then, make decoction as usual.
P.S. I don't drink coffee myself, but I've got honest-to-goodness great reviews on my coffee. That's how I perfected the explanation of the process! Hope I've helped.

Check out this link for the chicory I buy. It's called Coffee Partner. You can also order it online on that site. Pretty cheap too, same price at Giant. It's the same 6.5 oz box thatI mix with 39 oz of coffee.

I think in my opinon the trick to making good coffee is heating the milk on the stove, not the microwave. With the same coffee powder you can taste the difference if you make it the old fashioned way by boiling milk first, then adding coffee powder/decoction to it just like amma used to make
