Chandra & others sorry for the late reply..

Some people sing that song as 'kaNNuunjal aadi' (with a moonRu suzhi 'Na&#39. But I remember my paatti singing with a 'na' (kannuunjal). Even I thought it should have been a marUu of 'kanni oonjal' (meaning either First-time-swing-experience or to mean 'kanni, oonjal aadi irundhaaL&#39.

    Pasupathy,
I was quoting the kan stuff, just for fun to note that surprisingly that by itself has some meaning.

    Vengkatan,
Interesting to see how names of even such simple (but beautiful) and current customs could be subject to ambiguity! Shows why we must be vigilant in cultural matters.

    Chandra,VEnkatan,
It is interesting that "kanni" means different things in different words: kazaga agaraathi says"kannippongal" celebrated after Pongal is a festival celebrated by ladies. I also remember
"kaakkayppidi" "kannuppidi" used by mothers to coax children to eat; there, my guess is, that "kannu" comes "kanRu", calf. ( kannUnjcal has to mean first-swing since a guy+kannikai are both involved!) ( I wonder, if we can use the word "Unjcalar" to refer to "swinging couples" )
Sorry, for getting away from the thread, so much...!

vEnkatan: Let me join others in complimenting you for the nice effort to bring great traditional songs into our focus.
Pas: As I remember, kAkkAyppidi, kannuppidi are terms used on the day-after-Pongal typically by ladies when they lay several aliquots of pongal etc. on banana leaves and invite crows to eat the portions. (I just checked the veracity of this with my wife!!. Kannu may still mean kanRu here since it is also the mAttuppongal dy. I haven't heard these words uttered to make children eat. (In any case, this is not too important and I guess we may be going too far away from vEnkatan's laudable goals!!)

    vaLLik kalyaaNam(................)

Here are some samples from "vaLLi kalyaaNam" , a series of songs put together by Sri A.S .Raghavan of New Delhi
(popularly also known as Guruji Raghavan) using the words of AruNagirinaathar from many of his works such as
    Thiruppugazh.
    1. Á¡¨Ä Á¡üÈø
    -----------------
    ÅûÇ¢

    Á¡¨Ä Á¡üȢɡý ÓÕ¸ý Á¡¨Ä Á¡üȢɡý ....
    (mamy stanzas like this)
    2.¬Êæïºø
    ----------------
    «Ã¸Ã º¢Å¡Â ºõÒ ÌÕÀà ÌÁ¡Ã ¿õÒõ
    «Ê¡÷¾¨Á ¬ÇÅó¾ ¦ÀÕÁ¡û
    ¿ÅÉ£¾Óõ ¾¢ÕÊ ¯Ã§Ä¡¦¼ ´ýÚõ †Ã¢
    ÃÌáÁ÷ º¢ó¨¾ Á¸¢ú ÁÕ¸ý.... (¬Êø )
    ...etc
    3. ¸ýëïºø
    ---------------
    ¸ýëïºø ¬Î¸¢ýÈ¡û ÅûÇ¢ôÀ¢Ã¡ðÊ
    ¸ýëïºø ¬Î¸¢ýÈ¡û
    ¡Á¨Ç Á½ìÌÓ¸ º¡Á¨Ç Á½¢ìÌ¢¨Ä
    ¬¦ÂÉ «¨ÆòÐÕÌõ §¿Â측ÃÛõ
    ²¾ÁÈ ¿¢îºÂ Á§É¡Ä ŢÇ즸¡Ç¢Ôõ
    ¡¸ ÓÉ¢ÅüÌâ ¸¡Åü¸¡Ã ÓÕ¸Û¼ý (¸ýëïºø)... (etc)
    4. ÅûÇ¢ ¸ø¡½ ¨ÅÀŧÁ
    ÓÕ¸ý ¸ø¡½ ¨ÅÀŧÁ
    §Å¨ÄÂýÒ ÜÃÅó¾ ²¸ ¾ó¾Â¡¨É ¸ñÎ
    §Å¼÷Áí¨¸ µÊ«ïº «¨½ó¾ ÅʧÅÄý ( ÓÕ¸ý) .....
    Ì¢ø¦Á¡Æ¢ì ¸Âø ŢƢ и¢÷*¾ú º¢¨ÄѾø
    ±Ø¾¢¼ «Ã¢Â ±Æ¢ø Á¼Á¸û Åﺢ (ÅûÇ¢)...
    *************
The full-fledged VaLLi kalyaaNam usually takes 4-6 hours, as Sri Raghavan does it.
He did this at Balaji Temple, Aurora, Illinois on November 9, 97 when he was visiting
USA. A group of Thiruppugazh AnbargaL at Toronto have done an abridged version
of this in about 2 hours in many places around Toronto.

More information about Thiruppugazh AnbargaL can be obtained at:
