    Mythological Tamil Films

I am fascinated with mythology and love Indian mythology in particular. I've recently discovered the Tamil film industry and it's vast offerings.

If you have seen any of the films below, could you kindly provide a synopsis?

    Sakthi Leelai (1972)

    Mahamayi (1992)

    Mahasakthi Mariamman (1986)

    Mariyamman Thiruvizha (1978)

Also, are there any movies that you would highly recommend in this genre?

Sakthi leelai talks about various leelai of Godess

but Maaraiamman thiruvizha is not a mythological film it's about a rural family where (sujatha) comes as a bride and the problems she faces and how her b'law sivakumar solves all is the story

2 great songs from maariamman thiruvizha

Thanks for clearing that up. I assumed Maariamman referred to a form of the mother goddess in Tamil Nadu.

Can you elaborate what stories Sakthi Leelai is about? Does it just deal with Durga devi, or all the mahashakthis (Saraswati, Lakshmi, Parvati)?

I also came across the titles Mupperum Deviyar and Devi Dharisanam. Are these ones any good?

    Mythological films

Can we include all APN's & KSG's Puranic films under the category? Then there are many starting from Srivalli, Thiruvilayadal, Thiruvarutchelvar, Thirumal Perumai, Saraswathy sabatham, Kanthan Karunai, Agathiyar, Adhi Parasakthi, Dasavatharam, Sampoorna Ramayanam, Navagraha Nayaki, Karnan, Maya Bazaar etc. There are films like Mariyamman Thiruvizha also a lot: Samayapurathale Saatchi, Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi, Nambinar Keduvathillai, Janani etc.

Sure. All Purnaic films count. I just posted the ones I was interested based on title, since I do not understand the film names that are distinctly Tamil. If you could provide one sentence summaries for any of those films which you've seen, that would be great.

Have you heard of Deviyin Thiruvilayadal? What is that one about?
