I am waiting for Ponnunjal... another of those nostalgic movies for me. Early 70s, a kid and I watched PP, Praptham, Ponnunjal and many other movies in cinema!

You can get Ponunjal VCD in Mani Osai. I already did a review on that movie. Wonderfully underrated movie.

Yes, Ponoonjal is a very simple & lovely film and I would dare say it is boring. All the characters are depicted in a very ordinary fashion and the actors too never attempt to give an over the top performance. Particularly NT - I just loved his performance. Another stunner is M.N. Nambiar. He treads away from the hard core villain path and takes a much lighter method to bring down the hero.

Imagine, a man giving a powerful, stunning & unbeatable performance like Barrister Rajnikanth & the same person doing a quite opposite role (of course, Kannan in Gowravam itself stands as a proof for this). But surprisingly, I liked both the extremes.

In a recent interview in Kalaignar TV, director C.V. Rajendran said that once MSV finished recording " Agaya pandhalile..." and he listened to it, he straigh away went to NT and told him that he is going to quit. Its such a mind blowing song that he was worried about matching it with picturisation. Then somehow NT convinced him and made him to do the film.

15. ஒரு நடிகன் திரைப்பட துறைக்கு வந்து 35 வருடங்களுக்கு பிறகும், அந்த 35 அனுபவ வருடங்களை விட வயது குறைவான ஹீரோக்கள் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் நிலை பெற்ற பிறகும், ஒரே நாளில் மூன்று படங்களை வெளியிடுவது அதில் இரண்டு நூறு நாட்களை கடப்பது ஒன்று ஐம்பது நாட்களை கடந்து ஓடுவது என்ற சாதனையை நடிகர் திலகம் செய்தார் என்று சொன்னால், நடிப்பில் மட்டுமல்ல இது போல சாதனை சக்கரவர்த்தியையும் தமிழ் சினிமா கண்டதுமில்லை இனி காணப் போவதுமில்லை.

This is the one, for which I have been eagerly waiting

I am happy, atleast it had a 50 day run.. but not a great movie for both VK & NT (IMO)

In 1987.. I really liked Jallikattu .. It would have been better (for me) if VK & NT did something like Jallikattu & VK is capable of Jallikattu (SR's) type of roles (I know VK's limits & wont expect a Devar Magan from VK & NT :P )

I thought Krishnan Vanthan was a flop. I thought it gave massive headache to Tenggai. I believe Tenggai passed away after this.

In 1987.. I really liked Jallikattu .. It would have been better (for me) if VK & NT did something like Jallikattu & VK is capable of Jallikattu (SR's) type of roles (I know VK's limits & wont expect a Devar Magan from VK & NT :P )

VK in that film would have been unsuitable. Apart from NT, the film benefits from SR’s past iconic roles, the half-boil Arumugam, Chinnappadas, etc. I believe VK/NT combination might have worked in more rural/folksy environment (at that time, of course).

I like this film a lot. NT is his Barrister Rajinikanth getup. He has good chemistry with SR (the chemistry a bit lost in Puthya Vaanam), and blends in well with Manivannan-esque story telling.

This film has one song, “Hey Raja”. Perhaps the only time SPB and Mano sang together under Ilayaraja. (I’m not sure about other composers).

I am not asking for a replacement of VK for SR in JK. I meant an action movie of that kind or any other cop related story

Manivannan gave JK fully utilising sathyaraj's lollu + action.

But I think it was the other way round in Pudhiya Vaanam where SR goes on to take the baddie " Gocha " under NT's supervision !! Probably VK could have been the right choice here.

JK was a thorough entertainer. NT-SR chemistry worked out well in this film.

Yeah, you are right.

A small trivia about Pudhiya Vaanam - NT, in a song that mentions MGR, does a quick finger flick ala MGR. But you have to catch it fast. Only time NT does MGR style...though it still looks NTish.
