I'll elaborate on the song at the end of the day.... :suspense:

Well basically the babe is miffed that that damn moon is spying on them. Basically she is asking the moon to buzz off and please respect the privacy, damn it

And Kannadhasan, of course, was very diplomatic

ok, at the outset, the song appears like a normal love song, right?
    here is the twist.

Gemini and Sowcar are married as kids. After marriage they go back to thier own villages. Tragedy happens and each family thinks that the other family is dead. But in reality both of them are fine.

Sowcar grows up and remains a widow. One of the bestest song ever in TFM comes now. Look at how Kavignar aptly describes her thoughts and feelings...

anyway, back to the earlier song.

much later Sowcar visits her friend EV Saroja and gets introduced to Gemini. Saroja and Gemini are lovers.
one fine day, Gemini's mother reveals a photo of hers son's childhood marriage and then Sowcar realises that she is NOT a widow!

quickly putting poovum pottu, she rushes to tell the news to Gemini.

Alas, Gemini and Saroja are in love mood and Saroja sings the song!
Now go through the lyrics and understand the hidden meanings!

    Crikey...I didn't realise the situation.

On one side, its Saroja basically just teasing the moon like lovers do all the time...okay, not all the time, but used to.

But on the other side, its Kavignar the story teller telling the character (Sowcar) that she got no business butting into lovers. I mean, they were never in love in the first place, Gemini and Sowcar, I mean. The lines in the song also serves as her conscience.

    Kavingaree

En arivu kannu, athuvum intha veLLikizhama athuvumaa tirantha NOV-ukku nandri. Bring out more good stuff NOV. Love to discuss Kannadhasan, the genius, the master!

as a matter of fact, before the song her "conscience" does speak to her.

Rakesh, its really great that Kannadhasan can write so perfectly for a scene which has two opposing views. That is why we still celebrate him.

Notwithstanding that, its really sad that these days songs play no part in the story and just act as fillers or adverts for the films. You can take one song out from a film and easily use it in any other film.

When you listen to songs of that era, you actually see the film or the scene in your mind. They are embedded as part of the story, the film overall. We have to thank the performers themselves, for when we hear TMS, though he basically sound the same, we still see MGR or NT in our mind. The music, the lyics, the picturisation, the onscreen performance all tailored to what the story wants. "Situation songs" as we'd say.

It sort of changed during IR's emergence, when we stopped thinking about the films themselves, unless its Rajini/Kamal, and we listened to just the songs. IR was the hero, as far as we are concerned.

Then came the MTV culture. All songs and the song sequence became standalone stuff. I used to be annoyed seeing others who'd watch song VCDs, the same way we listen to music. Especially so when the 90s was experiencing all-time low in quality of music (IR/ARR tavira) and onscreen performances (except you know whos). You are right, they are interchangable. But at the same time, the kind of story telling that was going on...the same stupid theme (love/friendship) again and again, how are we going to get variety in content?

But what the heck...we are here to celebrate Kannadhasan's work....In that show you recommended, MSV keeps pointing out that very word, "teamwork". And what a team. And to think that MSV worked with gigantic talents like Kannadhasan and NT and has to deal with MGR and be diplomatic to Valee and compete with Maamaa!

    Okay, sorry, back to Kannadhasan.

    Nice thoughts Rakesh.
Just now I went back home for lunch and watched Kaalaththai Vendravargal programme (which comes immediately after Amutha Ganam - my fav programme)

This week on KV was TMS, and one of the songs they played was oru kOppayilE en kudi iruppu.
Kannadhasan himself appears in the film, and summaa solla koodaadhu, the man was dashing is coat and suit.
He seemed uncomfortable though to appear in front of the camera, and is seen only swaying to the song.

anyway, here is the song.... you would know of later day inspirations. The song is uniquely befitting the Kavignar.

NOV? Antha scene paarthathilla? Iratta Thilagam?

He was ladies man, that's granted. He did the same stiffly standing, finger waddling routine years later in Suryaghandi singing Paramasivan Kazhuttilirunthu...

    Groucho,

I get the feeling that TMS sings with different voice for NT and MGR. I remember, several times I had correctly guessed the lead actor in a song by just listening to the TMS's voice... in all the cases you get the feeling that you are listening to the actual person. His voice kind of became the real voice of those actors.

Nice posts NOV. Expecting more .
