    Gnana Oli.

Posting a analysis of the movie after watching it right now.

Its Sivaji’s Alaparai all the way

The film shows NT on three different shades, but with tragic end on each phase.
The Film opens with NT ringing Church bell and the first phase sees NT in jovial mood. Playing around (the rooftop sequence is a delight, "Amma Kannu"). His wife goes to hospital for Delivery but his wife dies. NT preparing, unwittingly, his own wife's coffin.

The second phase begins with his daughter and his Childhood pal Major Sunderarajan enters his life. NT has high hopes on his daughter but she crashes his hopes . Major arranges for marriage of NT daughter( Saradha) with Srikanth after seeing them together but when Srikanth refuses to marry her NT hits him and Srikanth dies . NT is imprisoned and his daughter dies . The priest who loves NT and NT loves him to the core dies and NT escapes to fulfil his beloved Godfather’s vision

Third act takes a different twist altogether...NT comes back with a bang Arun with his unique talking his makeup and getup, and his performance as a rich man...with different body language, nuances is as a jewel in crown This is where we get Deevanee song. Beautifully picturised.

Few scenes are timeless. NT meeting Major in his bunglow and Andhanaal Nayabagam song playing in background, Major’s repeated try in trapping NT like removing his cooling glasses, addressing him as Antony, asking his house number, referring priest name.

Another scene - When Arunkumar see his daugher Saradha ( Mary ) ....spontaneously shouts Maryyyyyyy......then quickly stars at the Mary photo & says Mary....
    Next:

    In VKR’s house:

when Major & NT in Saradha's house concluding on the wedding :

NT sips the cup of Payasam with all the cheer while being eagerly watched by Major ....as he tries to take finger prints ....& clandestinely Major takes away the cup ....while he was about to leave :

    NT : Inspector ......
    Major : Yes
NT : Mathavunga senja adhu thiruttu ..... Anaa adha inspecter senjaa....adhu nyabaga maradhi illaya ??
Major : What do you mean ?
NT : I mean the silver tumbler !!

Major oru vidhama asadu vazindhu kondu sirippaaar !

while NT will be giving a wry smile & casually remove the gloves

Next when Saradha comes to meet his father

NT emotional outburst when speaking with his daughter , fuming in front of Priest’s photo was simply superb

The uneducated Antony - used to call Major as LAWRENCUUUUU

But when he becomes Arunkumar - LAWRENCE !!

Observe the style & graceful looks with that high society etiquette !

The movie is awesome as it is delightful cat and mouse game between Major & NT

    P. Madhavan directed this movie, and he directed it with professional grace. He knew what is there to be extracted out of NT and he (and us, the audience) gets the most. MSV did an amazing job, not only giving us memorable songs but thunderous background score as well.( still echoes in ears)

I don’t know who played the priest, he was amazing) Also I do not know who played NT’s wife and Grand daughter

But I just have few answered questions How did Antony become rich it could have been shown

Why a waste comedy track in such a classical movie

Ganaoli is about a innocent rough man who has no/ very little happiness but makes most out of it educates his daughter and dreams of her future and it goes haywire but every man will have his share of fortune and good time hence as per theory of Nature Antony becomes Arun and accomplishes his Godfather’s wish

In climax he surrenders why when a person is about to die, his brain will know it but his heart will not accept it if its sudden death in this case NT is brain whereas his daughter and grand daughter are his heart the scene in which he begs Major Lawrence Am I not your Friend is top class and NT himself consoles his daughter and grand daughter and rings church bell and goes to jail
It was splendid combination of NT-Vietnam veedu Sundaram - Major-MSV-PNS

Thanks for the info Mr Siva, I'm only staying with my sis in Colombo now and will soon be leaving for uk. will try to contact you then. I lived in Jaffna about 25 years ago and was a student whe I left. You must be around 60 to hold such notices, if you don't mind me mentioning it. In the late 80's, during my departure, the situation in Jaffna wasn't that of celebrating, (still is!) if you know what I mean. My father wouldn't have let me join any fan club either. So talking about Sivaji fans club in Jaffna is news to me. Maybe people who were born in the 50's might know.
