Did MGR movies have punch dialogs? I can't recall any (I"ve only seen like a couple MGR movies though). Someone post it if you remember.

MGR did not have punches that glorified himself ... It was part of his Thathuva paadalgal ... But, he had loads of political punches pointed towards his opponents for the most part ... In fact, his movies in the 70s were all connected to his political campaigning in one way or the other!

    Oh ok.

I do remember one thing, whenever they show MGR's home in his movies, wether it's a huge mansion, or a small hut, it always had a picture of Anna on the walls, and he'd make sure that the audience saw that as well...Smart Guy!

    TR is the best!

Try typing T. Rajendar in Youtube ... There will be a court room scene where TR and Gowthami will be lawyers ... There will be a total exchange of dialogues in English ...

"SMART GUY" - intha maathiri ellam euphemisms MGR-ukku use panna koodaathu!

If hardcore MGR fans see such statements, they will get angry!

Anyways, yeah, he will have Anna's pic on one side, and Mahatma's pic on the other ... He used to call Anna as THENNAATU GANDHI!

I think 'punch dialogues' goes a long way. Even the immortal Veerapandiya Kattabomman lines could be construed as one.

But ultimately, it belongs to Rajini. He made it famous. Probably started with Ithu Eppadiyirukku. Then, you see the politically laced lines in, say, the P. Vasu films. But Baasha made everyone stand up and notice. There was some in Annamalai before that, but Baasha made the lines fiery. Soon after, all the stars are using that. The seniors mostly stayed away, though Sathyaraj have used it in great effect. He's not a follower, he was also a pioneer remember, "Tagadu, tagadu" or "En character-ai purinjikka matteraenggale" or 'Ennama Kannu'.

Those lines were gem, because they came at the right moment. As of now (no attack to any actors here) they are so frequent; used all the time that they kinda lost value. Remember when shooting overseas was seen in awe. Now, it's so normal that nobody gives a damn. That is what happening to punch dialogues, especially since anyone can use it. It has come to parody level.

Even Rajini stayed away from it in Chandramukhi, which almost had none (the Yaamirukka bayamen is a very common line). I wonder if he is going back to the one liners in Sivaji.
