Padmini - pongalO pongal. In Jil Jil's nadaga kottAi, as they meet after a dispute, azhagu kAttuvadhu - look at the difference between NT's and Padmini's expressions. Ofcourse, nAttiyakAri so adhukkAga konjam exaggerate paNNi irukkalAm but still I find the performance over-cooked.

TRR, Danaal, Sarangapani and co. - passable but inconsistent.
Balaji, Nambiar and the mirasdAr - Balaji comes out top among these. Enough said
Madanpur rANi - . unsahikkable
Manorama- granted, her best performance ever and a lovely character.
I maintain that I can only ever watch NT scenes and Nagesh scenes without flinching.

One flaw in the movie is both Balaji and Nambiar episodes go through the same conflict resolution method. My guess is that the Madanpur episode must have been much longer and with more meat in the novel. Here, it just about serves the purpose of closing out the movie.
A classic no doubt due to the memorable characters but because of NT's excellence, performances look inconsistent to me atleast.

It is very close to my heart as it is one of my father's absolute favourites - he apparently watched it 29 times over a month and a half after it was released. That's a family record for his extended family. But I am sure there are many here who would have beaten that record.

grouch, it was a refreshing change to see AVM Rajan underplay - not by choice but by compulsion being unable to figure how to play the role. It was a relief that he didnt know how to act this role - thappichOm!

true....... even in scenes involving Sivaji, sometimes the struggle of co-actors is evident....... AVM Rajan for example in Thillana Moganambal....... paarkurathukke paavama irukkum.... antha nadhaswaratha vaai la vachikittu enna panrathunnu theriyaama pentha pentha muzhippar........ in front of Sivaji's adroit handling of nadhaswaram AVM Raajan looked like (atleast for me) ezhuthatha pen ah kai la vachikittu aana teacher kitta eppadi solrathu theriyaama antha pen ah vala ezhuthara maathiri baavala kaatara Student ....

அதாவது கதைப்படி சிக்கல் சண்முக சுந்தரம் ஒரு பாத்திரம்தான், அவருக்கு சகோதரர் பாத்திரம் எதையும் திரு. கொத்தமங்கலம் சுப்பு படைக்கவில்லை. ஆனால் படத்தில் நாதஸ்வரம் வாசிப்பதற்காக மதுரை திரு எம்.பி.என்.சேதுராமனை அணுகி, நடிகர்திலகத்துக்காக படத்தில் வாசிக்க வேண்டும் என்று கேட்டபோது, 'நான் மட்டும் தனியாக எங்கும் வாசிப்பதில்லை. என் தம்பி பொன்னுசாமிக்கும் சேர்த்து வாய்ப்பளிப்பதாக இருந்தால் சொல்லுங்கள் இருவரும் வந்து படத்தில் வாசிக்கிறோம்' என்று கறாராகப் பேசியதால் புதிதாக இடையில் செருகப்பட்ட பாத்திரம்தான் சண்முகசுந்தரத்தின் தம்பி தங்கரத்தினம் பாத்திரம். அதில் ஏ.வி.எம்.ராஜன் நடிக்க வைக்கப்பட்டார். ஸாரி, 'நடிக்க' வைக்கப்படவில்லை. அண்ணனோடு நாதஸ்வரம் வாசித்தது போக மற்ற நேரங்களில் கூட்டத்தோடு 'நிற்க' வைக்கப்பட்டார்.

1968-ல் அவரும் ஒரு கதாநாயகனாக வலம் வந்துகொண்டிருக்கும்போது, அவருக்கு போதிய வாய்ப்பு அளிக்கப்படாதது ஏ.பி.என் செய்த அநியாயம் என்றுதான் சொல்ல வேண்டும். நடிகர்திலகத்துடன் நடிக்கிறோம் என்ற பெருமைக்காக அவரும் பொறுத்துப்போயிருப்பார் என்று நம்புகிறேன். தங்கவேலுவுக்கும், டி.ஆர்.ராமச்சந்திரனுக்கும், ஈ.ஆர்.சகாதேவனுக்கும் வழங்கப்பட்ட வாய்ப்புக்கூட ராஜ்னுக்கு இல்லை. அவர் வாய்திறந்து பேசும் இடங்களை விரல்விட்டு எண்ணி விடலாம். (மனோரமா: "அடி ஆத்தி, சின்னவுகளா? நல்லா இருக்கியளா?")

Oh that too....actually list-u neendikitte pogum. I even liked him in Ethiroli. I like him. Damn, I miss these kind of character actors, him, SV Suppiah, Ranggarao....gems, treasures!!

Another thing about Thillana Mohanambal.......the film is devoid of most of the accepted and beaten to death filmy cliches........ In usual films, the hero will be all over the film appearing in virtually all of the scenes...but here the protoganist is depicted not as a hero but a normal man with usual weaknesses.... When the heroine was in danger from the villain, it was a Saadhu who arranges for local men to fight against the villain's henchman and not the hero..... in general through out the film, whenever the heroine's dignity was under threat it was either the situation or some other character artists who bail her out rather than the hero...... In fact the hero, falling victim to the circumstances, even let down the heroine in the climax........ not sure if any Top heroes (in their peak form) would have agreed to take such a characterisation (there had been instances, even if the original stories had such kind of characterisation, either the director or hero would have made some alteration to suit to the hero's "image")
