Ey ayyA sAmy (varusham 16, with KSC)

saraNam is so sweet in this, especially the first line is pure honey! Both SPB & KSC excel in bringing both the kuRumbu & kAdhal in this song which is also an adi-dhadi percussion delight! I've seen the original Malayalam movie (ennennum kaNNEttande) which was a sweet movie, though with limited success. OTOH, the Thamizh remake was a mega hit - with Karthik & Kushboo - but my colleague who watched this was so upset with the modifications done for the TF. Happily, I didn't have to suffer that (as I never watched this movie in theater). IIRC, I watched portions of it on the web years later but I don't think I've seen the revised climax etc. In any case, the ending in ennennum was too classy (for me) to be changed...

The "main" songs went to KJY (one that describes the girl as fruit garden, shore of gangAmA & melting heart). My most fav from this movie (the only song I had in my personal recordings those days) was / is "poo pookkum mAsam", a wonder in film music! Some instrumental expert please come and explain us how IR has achieved that wonderful adi-dhadi arrangement for the pallavi! Though the Malayalam movie had a couple of sweet songs, they were not anywhere close to the TFM (dEva dundhubi was excellent and even 'poovattaka thathichchinni', which is the equivalent of today's song is decent...Jerry Amaldev was the composer, who worked with Fazil for the original of poovE poochchooda vA also - nOkkaththA dhooraththu kaNNum nattu, he supposedly had music lessons in USA).

All the songs of V16 were big hits in TN & Palakkad - and most are evergreen to this day!

kaRpudaiya AmbaLainga oorukkuLLE (thangamAna rAsA, 1989)

Don't know much about this movie - except reading some comedy stuff in the Goundamani thread in TF section. This song sounds very familiar, however...possibly heard a number of times during bus journeys inside south TN (though not exactly in 80's but later on). The youtube has the same karagam pair in this song (Ramarajan - Kanaga) doing very similar expressions as in the other movie. Possibly a follow-up after the big hit. Composing this song should have been 1/4th of a day in office for rAsA and singing it could have been 1/8th of a day in office for Bala. MGR-ish tune (possibly a very similar old song exists) and very janaranjaga / pattikkAttu style orchestration. Those who are following rAsa music for a long time may not be so impressed with this number. However, churning out hit after hit in this fashion is no joke. Also, the song itself is no small thing to compose, if one views from a "budding composer" angle

It's credited to S-G in the movie "auto rAjA" (Vijayakanth) but merely a dubbed song of what Rajan Nagendra done in Kannada, as per this dhool SOTD post

The same movie had the famous IR song 'sangaththil pAdAtha kavidhai' (aka thumbi vA...gum sum gum...etc)

Varusham 16 is one of very few movies I watched more than 5 times when it was released. Excellent family drama. Mainly loved IR's music, VKR, Janakaraj performances and of course for young and new Kushbu (her second film right?). Thangamaana Raasa is not a big hit, may be it did average business, but we mainly went for the movie expecting another karagam type of movie, but it was purely Annan and Maestro's show. Those days, as usual I love Ramarajan's non-acting skills compared to Karthik's embarrassing acting skills.

Thangamana Rasa had a very interesting screenplay, but its was all so underplayed that it lost its appeal... innum nalla eduthirukkalaam mathiri ellarum disappoint anadha sollvanga... overexpectation probably killed the film !! Ramarajan wasnt so flashily dressed and Kanaga lost her appeal - but the story was interesting.!!
