Standing the test of time is one important factor for a movie to be called as a GREAT movie -
Viv,
Like I said, I belong to an "average" movie appreciator group and not a connoisseur
mahAnadhi wasn't a big success even at the time of its release - standing the test of time comes much after that (barring a few brilliant portions, it was a bore and drag IMO - tons of 80's Malayalam movies were with similar themes but a lot more crispier, that's one of the reason I couldn't feel this 90's product a "fresh" one). Unnecessary & too many songs, which were also ordinary by IR standards is another reason. Not even one comes to my mind today - other than the sriranga ranga temple song - which, for an IR/KH movie - from my PoV - is nothing short of shocking!
I never felt that way for 16V songs (neither unnecessary not outdated). Also, even when I watched recently on dvd, 16V hasn't lost lusture
Well, taste differs. In any case, AV can give marks only at a point of time
