Professor Selvakumar Sir thanks for the story line of Dasi penn or jothi malar.

Interestingly, this film based on a folk tale about a devadasi dedicating her life to the worship of Lord Shiva and refusing to follow the traditional family profession of entertaining men, had three titles, Dasi Penn, Jyothi Malar and Thumbhai Mahatmyam.
The young devadasi (Balasaraswathi of the ‘Malligai poomalai rojaa' fame) is forced by her family to yield to the lustful zamindar (Das) but she refuses for, she is devoted to Lord Shiva (MGR). She wishes to marry her lover (Mahalingam), but there are a lot of hurdles. The zamindar attempts to kidnap the woman to make her his mistress. But his attempts fail thanks to the intervention of Shiva and his consort Parvathi (Santhanalakshmi).
Produced by Bhuvaneswari Pictures, this film was directed by the iconic American Tamil filmmaker Ellis R Dungan and the talented editor R. S. Mani, and was shot at Minerva Movietone in Bombay and Newtone Studios in Madras (now Chennai).
There were nearly 30 songs rendered mostly by Balasaraswathi, an excellent singer, and Mahalingam who also sang duets with her. In such duets, Mahalingam vanishes and MGR as Shiva dances with Balasaraswathi much to her delight. It was one of MGR's early movies — he played divine roles in some, looking impressive.
The music was composed by Saluru Rajeswara Rao and Lalitha Venkataraman, noted singer of the day who sang and also played the veena. A Mylaporean who started a music school in that area, she later relocated to Bombay after marriage, and created history by being the first woman in Tamil cinema to sing off-screen (playback) for the AVM film, Nandakumar (1938).
A parallel story in the film is about a married sister (Mathuram) who carries on an affair with a travelling sari salesman (NSK) and their illicit romance is always thwarted by the appearance of a fierce-looking giant (Ramaswami).
Mani began his career as an editor and worked with Dungan on Kalamegham, and later became a successful filmmaker with hits such as Kannagi, Kubera Kuchela and Krishna Bhakthi. He produced the hit film Maaman Magal. Later he turned religious and forgot all about films for the rest of his life.
Dungan made several cult films based mostly on mythology and folk tales without knowing a word of Tamil (except for saying ‘Payyaa, brandy kondaaa'!). However, he created film history with his superb onscreen narration and technical finesse and made classics such as Sathi Leelavathi, Sakunthalai, Meera, Kalamegham and Manthirikumari (in which he shared credit with its producer T. R. Sundaram.)
Coming back to the storyline, the devadasi is tired of life. Answering her prayers, Shiva transforms her into a ‘Thumbhai' plant. Even today, its flowers are offered to Lord Shiva during worship in many places. Hence, the film also had the title Thumbhai Mahatmyam.
Dasi Penn performed fairly well at the box office, but sadly no print of this film exists today.
Remembered for: the melodious songs and dances of Balasaraswathi and MGR, and excellent onscreen narration.

முதல் முறையாக பாட்டு புத்தகத்தின் முகப்பில் நமது மக்கள் திலகம் தோன்றும் காட்சி. அவரது பெயரும் இந்த பாட்டு புத்தகத்தில் முன் அட்டையில் பிரசுரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

Dear Vinodh Sir,

Though the Still is posted by Mr. Ravichandran, it is repeated since the same photograph is printed in the Original Theatre Song Book along with the name of our beloved M.G.R.

From his first movie "Sathileelvathy" to his ninth movie "Tamilariyum Perumal", his image was not published in any of the Song Books. On that aspect, "Daasippen" or "Jothi Malar" took the credit. That is why I had posted the same image from the Song Book.
