A Goundamani flavour to your t-shirts

How would you like to own a T shirt that answers the legendary comedian Goundamani’s famous Soppanasundari riddle? Or maybe show off your allegiance to Ilayaraja and Rahman together? Well, with GokkaMakka Tees, you can do just that and more. Founded by three self-confessed Goundamani fans, the online store is, as they put it, ‘all the energy of Tamil Nadu bundled up into a T shirt’.

Sanjay Kumar was a engineer with two years of work experience when he decided to quit and join an ad agency. A chance meeting with a colleague Sreejith Madhavan led to the discovery that they were both not only film buffs but also huge fans of the Goundamani and Senthil jokes. “In fact, Sreejith is a Malayalee and has never stepped foot in Chennai, but he knows more about Tamil movies than most Tamil people,” says Sanjay. “So we struck up an conversation and came up with the idea of GokkaMakka Tees.”

The first ever idea they came up with was the ‘Ilayarahmaniac’, explains Sreejith, who is an illustrator by profession. “Apart from being crazy Goundamani fans, we also loved the music of Ilayaraja and A R Rahman. I think that’s how we started our first conversation,” muses Sreejith.

Tagged the ‘Apparel from a parallel universe’, the T-shirt collection doesn’t consist of Goundamani jokes alone. There’s a throwback to the monkey peddling of our childhood (remember when we couldn’t reach the cycle pedals from our seat?) and a tribute to the different faces of Rajinikath among others. “After all, what is Tamil cinema without our Superstar?” asks Sanjay cheekily.

The name of their store might strike someone as very odd, but to a ‘Gounder’ fan it would ring clear bells. “Adangokkamakka was a favourite line of Goundamani,” explains Sanjay. “And we wanted a name that would reflect our passion as well as appear quaint to the broader audience. This seemed to fit the bill.”

The third member of the group, Ashok Kumar, was Sanjay’s collegemate. “He’s the one we go to when we’re short of money. He’s our financier,” chuckles Sanjay. An interesting thing about the team is that Sreejith works from his base in Bangalore, while Ashok and Sanjay take care of production from their end in Coimbatore. Ashok and Sreejith have never met. “That’s the advantage of an online store. I come up with the ideas and Sreejith and I go back and forth and settle on a design. Ashok is the money man. We don’t technically need to be in the same place,” says Sanjay.

As scattered as they might be currently, one of Sanjay’s fondest memories of Chennai was the movie Saroja. “I lived in Chennai for two years and I saw that movie here. It’s definitely coming up in some of other designs under production. I want either the van or the dialogue on the tee,” he says. “And Goa too. They’re such cult movies,” he says.

The less-than-a-month old online store has already had an outpouring of orders. “We’ve also had someone asking for T-shirts from Malayasia,” says Sanjay. One of their designs currently under production has got nothing to do with movies and everything to do with Singara Chennai. “It’s a spaceman or an alien, we haven’t decided which, who’s waiting in the line for water at a Metro Water truck,” laughs Sanjay adding that, surprisingly, they received quite a lot of orders for Rahman T-shirts from the North rather than the South. “The Soppanasundari and the Rajini tees are the favourite among folks down South,” he says.

Well, Goundamani fans or not, who wouldn’t like to know the answer to the eternal riddle of Soppanasundari?

50 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு சிவகங்கையில் ஒரு சாதாரண குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்து, வறுமையில் வாடி படித்து முடித்து நடிகனாகும் ஆசையில் நாடகங்களில் நடிக்கிறார். நாடகங்கள் மூலமாக சினிமா தொடர்புகள் கிடைக்க.. சென்னைக்கு வண்டியை விடுகிறார். இங்கே படாத பாடுபட்டு.. உதவி இயக்குனராக வசனகர்த்தாவாக உயர்கிறார். அதோடு அப்போது சான்ஸ் தேடி அலைந்துகொண்டிருந்த பல நடிகர், நடிகைகளுக்கும் வாய்ப்புகள் வாங்கித்தருகிறார். கவுண்டமணி,பாண்டியராஜன்,சுமித்ரா,முத்துராமன்,ஐ சரி வேலன் என ஏகபட்ட பேர் வாய்ப்புத்தேடி அலைந்த காலத்தில் கோலிவுட்டில் அவர்களுக்கான முதல்வாய்ப்பை பெற்றுத்தந்திருக்கிறார் அழகேசன்.

அதில் மிகச்சிலரே இன்னும் அந்த பழைய மரியாதையோடு அழகேசனோடு தொடர்பில் இருக்கிறார்கள் என்று வருத்தத்தோடு பதிவு செய்கிறார். சிலர் தன்னை முழுமையாக மறந்துவிட்டதையும் குறிப்பிடுகிறார்.

புகழின் உச்சிக்கு சென்ற பின்னும் இன்னமும் அழகேசனை ‘அழகேசண்ணே’ என்று அழைப்பவராகவும் அவரோடு சகஜமாக அதே பழைய அன்போடும் இருப்பவராக ஒரே ஒருவரைத்தான் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். அந்த நடிகர், கவுண்டமணி.

ஒருமுறை சாண்டோ சின்னப்பதேவர் தன் படத்துக்கு நல்ல நகைச்சுவை நடிகன் வேண்டும் என அழகேசனிடம் கேட்கிறார். அப்போது வாய்ப்புத்தேடி கம்பெனி கம்பெனியாக அலைந்துகொண்டிருந்தார் கவுண்டமணி. அவரை கண்டுபிடித்து தேவரிடம் அழைத்து செல்கிறார் அழகேசன்.

ஆபிஸ் ஹாலில் தேவர் அமர்ந்திருக்கிறார். கவுண்டமணி உள்ளே நுழைந்து வணக்கம் சொல்லிவிட்டு காத்திருக்கிறார். ‘’எந்த ஊர்.. கவுண்டமணி என்கிற பெயர் உனக்கு எப்படி வந்தது?’’ என்று எல்லா விஷயங்களையும் துருவி… துருவி… கேட்கிறார். கவுண்டமணியும் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்துவிடும் என்கிற நம்பிக்கையோடு பதில் சொல்கிறார்.

எல்லாம் பேசி முடித்த பின், தேவர் ‘’ஏம்பா நீ இவ்வளவு கறுப்பா இருக்கிறீயே.. உனக்கு மேக்கப் பவுடருக்கு எங்கேப்பா போறது?’’ என்று சொல்ல. கவுண்டமணிக்கு முகம் மாறிவிட்டது. பதில் பேசாமல் அமைதியாக நிற்கிறார். அவமானத்தை உணர்கிறார்.

‘’சரிப்பா நான் சொல்லி அனுப்பறேன். மகராசனா போய்ட்டு வா’’ என்று சொல்லி தேவர் கவுண்டமணியை அனுப்பிவிடுகிறார்.

கவுண்டமணியும் அழகேசனும் வெளியே வர.. கவுண்டமணி, அழகேசனை முறைக்கிறார்.

‘’இந்த ஆளு மிருகங்களை வச்சு படம் எடுத்து, அதோடயே பேசி பழகிட்டாருண்ணே.. அதான்.. என்னை மனுஷனா மதிச்சி பேசலைல.. எனக்கும் ஒரு காலம் வரும்ண்ணே.. அப்ப வச்சுக்கிற்றேன் கச்சேரிய’’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு, அங்கிருந்து போய்விடுகிறார்.

அதற்குப் பிறகு வேறு படங்களில் நடித்து கவுண்டமணி புகழின் உச்சிக்கு செல்கிறார். அந்த நேரத்தில் தேவர் பிலிம்ஸ் தண்டபானி கவுண்டமணியை ஹீரோவாக்கி படமெடுக்க அவரை அணுகுகிறார். ஆனால் கவுண்டமணி அதை மறுத்துவிடுகிறார். அதோடு பல வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னால் அவர் தேவர் பிலிம்ஸ் அலுவலகத்துக்கு வந்தது, அவருடைய அப்பா (தேவர்) அவமானப்படுத்தியதையெல்லாம் சொல்ல.. அந்த இடத்திலேயே தண்டபாணி மன்னிப்பு கேட்ட பின்புதான் படத்தில் நடிக்க ஒப்புக்கொண்டாராம் கவுண்டமணி.
