Finally, bottom line is, both films do well +- 5% difference between themselves and rake in money for the respective producers/actors. What's in it for the die-hard fans who spend most of their waking hours in this?

Film artists/actors are there for our entertainment .. Folks need to remember that they live a life far richer and comfortable than most of us. There's no point devoting our time, energies and performing paal abishegams while they amass money in crores and laugh at us.

Is this how you guys are comparing the success of a movie? Not by direction, acting, screenplay, dialogue etc but solely on the amount of money it makes. No wonder tamil cinema is in decline. All this money talk seems so childish.
